2008 schedule By Mike Reiss, Globe Staff

With the Pittsburgh Steelers clinching the AFC North title in Week 16, that means the final piece fell into place for the 2008 New England Patriots schedule.

As part of the NFL's pre-determined scheduling formula, the Patriots already knew 11 of their 13 opponents next year. They also knew that they would play the AFC North champion at home, and the AFC South champion on the road.

So now that the Steelers have clinched the North, the final spot is filled on the 2008 schedule:

Home games

Bills

Broncos

Cardinals

Chiefs

Dolphins

Jets

Rams

Steelers

Road games

Bills

Chargers

Colts

Dolphins

49ers

Jets

Raiders

Seahawks

Interesting, I've always wondered just how the scheduling system worked...

With the new schedule format, teams in the same division play 14 of 16 games the same (counting the head to head games).

6 within division, 4 against another conference division and 4 against one opposite conference division.

The other 2 are as against the same conference division excluding the 2 above as follows:

1st place plays the 2 first place in those divisions.

2nd place plays the 2 2nd place in those divisons.

etc.

Example:

SD Chargers play 6 in their own division, 4 against AFC South and 4 against NFC West

The last 2 are against 1st place in AFC North and East.

They may not lose again until 2009. Only close game will be against the Colts and maybe the Chargers.
Yeah right, cuz nothing changes year to year. No other teams get better, no one gets hurt in preseason, no surprise teams become dominant. And certainly no stupendous teams would ever slump. That's why the Ravens and Chargers have bye weeks and the Pats have to play on the road again this year.

The Patriots have to play the Broncos next year; so much for going undefeated in 2008.
For who? The Broncos?
No, the Patriots. Since Belicheck took over as NE's head coach, the Broncos have owned the Patriots. The only NE win was a Monday night win when the Broncos were starting Danny Kannel. Aside from that game, the Patriots are never able to beat the Broncos. Now I know what many are thinking...the Patriots are one of the best teams ever this year, while the Broncos are having their worst season ever under Shanahan, but next year, it is likely that the Patriots will come back to the pack a bit (although I suspect they will still be a top team), while the Broncos likely improve (unless you think a team that has two losing seasons now in 13 years with Shanny is going to have two down years in a row), so the Broncos dominance of the Patriots could very well continue.

Road games

Bills

Chargers

Colts

Dolphins

49ers

Jets

Raiders

Seahawks
Whoa.4 West Coast games in there.

That's a lot of jet lag. I wonder if the schedule makers end up putting two of those road west coast games back to back that Belichick might have the team stay out west the week between, rather than make 4 cross-country flights in a 10-11 day span.

At Seattle. That's a trip I can't really remember the Pats making too many times. Anyone know how many games the Pats have played at Seattle since the Seahawks came into the NFL?

As for Denver...unfortunately the Broncos have had the Pats number for as long as I can remember (pre-Elway, Elway and Post-Elway). It seemed like the Pats always had to play out there until recently when they have had them at home a few times. Regardless, The Broncos always give the Pats a hard time and more often than not have get the W. As painful as it was being a Pats fan the Shannon Sharpe National Guard bit with the phone is still one of the funnier moments I've seen in the NFL (IMO nothing will top Jim Mora and "playoffs" though).

I guess they forgot how they lost to both NYJ and Miami only 1 season ago?Moss leaves and that team is very beatable. Especially if you can stay in the game long enough for the long toothers to wear down (Vrabel, Bruski, Harrison and even Seymore).that being said, that schedule does look easy on the surface

wow... what a cream puff schedule for them.... talk about set up. Frankly.. that's ridiculous. Maybe Arizona will know who they are.

The schedule system is setup fairly.

It's a bit annoying though that they have to play the Colts every year since they left the AFC East. That wasn't supposed to happen and it keeps happenning.

I changed my mind from 5 losses to 6; they will lose in Week 17 because its advantageous for their playoff matchup.Swept by the Bills in 08. You heard it here first.

The Pats had four games this year that they won by 10 points or less;1. Indy scored one TD in the fourth quarter, before the 14 minute mark. They didn't score again. 2. Philly did not score in the fourth quarter.3. The Ravens scored a TD on the first play of the fourth quarter. They didn't score again.4. The Jets scored three points in the fourth quarter. Those long toothers have been pretty solid towards the end of games. Harrison in particular was huge against the Raves in the 4th.

14-2. They will not lose both games to Buffalo. Losing to the Rams? No way. Seahawks will be tough in Seattle but I still think they come away from that 4 game west coast stretch 3-1.

Why are they playing the Colts on the road again? Shouldn't it alternate?
Colts played @ Foxboro in 2004, 2005 and 2006 in the regular season. The Pats will play at Indy in 2009, too. Just a weird scheduling quirk.LINK of fixed part of Pats' schedule from 2002 to 2009
What's the plan for 2010 and beyond?
Lombardi Trophy re-named the Belichick Trophy and the league folds because nobody can beat the Patriots.

The Rams will rise like a phoenix next year with a healthy oline and SJax looking to re-establish his name. The Bills are a couple secondary players from having a good all around team. I'm in the minority that think Jauron is a great coach.
