New kickoff regulations..... (1 Viewer)

Here are the straight facts. The kickoff used to be from the 35 yard line, before 1994. They changed it to the 30 in 1994, and had it that way until now.

Total number of 1,000+ yard kick returners in the 5 years prior to the 1994 rule change - 5, and not a single one had over 1,200 kick return yards.

Total number of players with 2+ kick return TDs in the 5 years prior to the 1994 rule change - 2, Eric Metcalf and Deion Sanders both had 2 in a season.

Total number of 1,000+ yard kick returners in the 5 years after the 1994 rule change - 60 (a 12 fold increase) and about half had over 1,200 kick return yards.

Total number of players with 2+ kick return TDs in the 5 years after the 1994 rule change - 10 (a 5 fold increase)

Total number of 1,000+ yard kick returners in the last 5 years - 68

Total number of players with 2+ kick return TDs in the last 5 years - 15

Jacoby Ford last year - 1,280 yards and 3 TDs (about 70 points assuming 25 return yards per point)

Sproles last year - 1,257 yards (about 50 points)

Spiller last year - 1,014 and 1 TD (about 46 points)

Harvin last year - 933 and 1 TD (about 43 points)

In order for Ford to make that up, he'd have to have an additional 510 receiving yards and 3 receiving TDs (which is more than he had last year on both counts), and that's just getting him back to where he was last year, not doing any better. In other words, he'd have to over double his receiving yards AND receiving TDs to just be the EXACT SAME fantasy player he was last year.

not sure what percent of leagues use return yardage....for those that don't I guess it would be more of a concern when drafting a DST....

I'm wondering if this will have an effect on NFL rosters more than anything....it may allow teams to not have to have as many "special team only" type guys (coverage)....

if you are say the Raiders and Jank can kick them through the end zone almost every time, it might allow you to carry a couple extra Wr's or RB's or something since you wouldn't neccessarily have to have those special coverage guys.....if he can blast it through the end zone every time, you could put almost anybody out there to just jog down the field....

eta: I guess you would still need to field a quality coverage team for those times when you get backed up by a penalty

There will still be punts so I do not see much changing except maybe teams not needing the kickoff specialist/2nd kicker.

FF impact? Makes some defenses less valuable then they were since KO return TDs will be less.

I think the Raiders should just send Seabass out there and line 10 guys up along their own sideline to fulfill the # of men on the field requirements. Then they can all stand there and watch Janikowski blast it through the uprights.
