New League Setup (1 Viewer)

Footballguy
A friend of mine invited me to this league - what do you guys think of this from a high level perspective?

Here are the rough guidelines drawn up for the new Fantasy Football League. It really is something unique to Fantasy Football that I haven't seen anywhere else. Instead of mirroring traditional Fantasy Football, this League will actually mirror the NFL GM's role in roster management. The new League offers several key changes to a traditional League:

1. Expanded rosters now including Individual Defensive Players with similar flexibility in lineup changes seen in our current system, only on both sides of the ball

2. A unique Keeper League system utilizing player contracts in 3 year, 2 year, and 1 year increments based on Draft position/Free Agency ranking

3. Free Agency replacing the Draft as the primary means of replenishing your roster like a traditional NFL team

4. A shortened annual Draft (4 rounds) consisting of only NFL rookies (after the first year's baseline Draft)

5. A Salary Cap system making roster moves more strategic and long term (including cap penalties for cutting underperforming overpaid players)

6. Franchise Tag feature to allow Owners to retain one player for an extra year in exchange for a larger Salary Commitment

7. A greater role in League Operations for the Commissioner to allow the League to run smoother with a reduced need for trivial voting issues

8. A new Injured Reserve feature allowing players to be shelved without Salary Cap impact or the need to release them from the team

9. Lower cost for the initial years while we get the League off the ground and work through minor issues ($25 for the first year)

10. A higher proportion of the money going to the League Winner (money back to 2nd place ONLY, and the rest to the winner)

11. A streamlines system to establish baseline rosters for this season including a combination Draft and Free Agency period.

If we do this, the Draft could be within the next week or so. A couple major holes remain. I will complete a Defensive scoring system and reduce kicker scoring. Special Teams TD's would go to the player, not the Kicker due to Offensive and Defensive players being on your roster. We will also likely try and get the Defensive scoring system to the point where an elite DE can earn you as many points as an elite QB if they have outstanding days, much like the system is setup now for elite WR's to be competitive with elite QB's and RB's after impressive showings. That is part of the fine tuning coming.

My first impression was someone stole my league rules!

I've had most of these rules in place since 2001 except for the money part...we play for a trophy and strict bragging rights.

From the perspective of someone very experienced in this format, I would definitely join and never look back. Warning: To be successful it is a year-round commitment, but if you're already a fanatic, it's all the better.

Additional information that was given to me....again, just wondering if people have been in leauges like this, and/or any issues with the rules as described here.

Major Concepts

1. Rosters

a. Comprised of 6 Offensive and 6 Defensive players, 1 Kicker

i. Offense will consist of 1 QB, at least 1 RB, and any combination of WR’s and TE’s to fill holes

ii. Defense will consist of 2 DL, at least 1 LB, and the rest DB’s.

iii. 1 Kicker

b. Game Day Rosters will consist of 25 players fitting under the salary cap.

c. Rosters can expand to 35 players without regard to the cap prior to the final roster cut down deadline.

2. Draft

a. First year’s Draft will be to establish rosters as baseline.

i. Rounds 1-4 will sign players to 3 year contracts, Rounds 5-8 are signed to 2 year deals, and Rounds 9-12 are 1 year deals

ii. Rounds 1-6 are set to take 2.5 minutes between picks while Rounds 7-12 will take 1.5 minutes between picks (4 hours)

iii. Initial Draft Order will be determined at random by website and will be a snake style Draft

b. All Drafts from that point on will be to select players taken in the NFL Draft or the NFL Supplemental Draft

i. Only rookies will be selected in future Drafts

ii. Draft will be 4 Rounds (40 players selected)

iii. Players drafted in Round 1 will get a 3 year deal, Round 2 will get a 2 year deal, and Round 3 will get a 1 year deal

iv. Future Draft picks can be traded, but only for 1 year in the future

v. All undrafted players enter into the Free Agency pool available on 1 year deals at minimum salaries

c. Draft Order is determined by a worst to first process

i. All non-playoff teams (6 of them) are placed in a lottery

ii. The worst two have 4 chances at the 1st pick, the next worst two have 2 chances, and team’s 5 and 6 have 1 chance.

iii. I will record all lottery drawings so that there is a record

iv. The first pulled is pick #1, the next is pick #2, and so on. If a duplicate is selected, I will discard and pick again.

3. Salary Cap and Contracts

a. Each team will be governed by a Salary Cap with an amount determined by the same website we set salaries with

b. Each team will be responsible for fitting their players under that salary cap each year

c. Salaries for individual players will be set using a predetermined website

d. At the start of Free Agency, each player will be assigned a demand price for what they are asking for in Free Agency

i. That price will move up and down similar to the initial Free Agency period based on demand

e. The top 20 free agents will be signed to 3 year deals, the next 30 (top 50 total) will receive 2 year deals, and the rest receive 1 year deals

f. Rookies get contract terms based on draft position (term) and salary (website predetermined amount)

4. Free Agency

a. Initial Free Agency period

i. In year 1, after the 12 Round Draft, a Free Agency period will open for 2 weeks allowing us to fill out our rosters

ii. Player salaries will be set for the salary amount listed by a designated website as a starting bid

iii. We will put players up for Free Agency in 50 player blocks to avoid overwhelming everyone

iv. If you bid for a player, I will bump his asking price by 25% and ask if anyone wants to meet his new demand

v. If nobody bids for a player, I will reduce his asking price by 10% and ask if anyone wants to meet his new demand

vi. If a player’s salary holds for 3 days with no additional bids up or down, that player will be awarded at his salary to the winning bid

vii. Every 3 days, 20 additional players will be added to Free Agency until 130 total have been made available

1. That’s 250 total between the Draft and Free Agency (10 x 25 players = 250)

viii. At the end of the Free Agency period, a free for all begins. First come first serve to fill out any remaining roster spots.

b. Future Free Agency periods

i. Free Agency will replace the Drafts as the primary offseason roster adjusting tool

ii. Players available for Free Agency are assigned starting bid prices assigned by a predetermined website

iii. Initial bids are placed by any number of teams on the top 30 players

iv. Bids move up (25%) and down (10%) every 3 days based on demand for the player’s services

v. Those bids and adjusted asking prices will be emailed out at least every other day during the free agency process

vi. When a player comes off the board in free agency, two more will be added until the top 250 players are on rosters or accounted for

vii. At that point, all remaining players and undrafted players become free agents available for the League minimum

viii. The first 20 free agents available will receive 3 year contracts, the next 40 get 2 year deals, and the rest get 1 year deals

c. Waiver Wire or midseason Free Agents

i. Any Free Agent added mid-year will be added for 75% of his predetermined website assigned salary on a 1 year deal

5. Franchise Tags

a. Each team will be allowed the use of a single Franchise Tag each season

b. The Franchise tag allows you to retain a player for one extra season that would’ve become a free agent

c. By placing the tag, you are required to match the salary of the highest paid player at his position in the previous season or 125% of the players previous contract, whichever is greater

d. The tag cannot be used on the same player for two consecutive years and all tagged players are unrestricted the following season

6. Commissioner

a. I am the President of the League

b. I will have the power to make all administrative decisions without League approval because voting on them simply takes too long (Executive Power)

c. Any decision that involves payment, scoring, trades, or adjustments to League rules will require a simple majority decision from the League’s members (excluding the Commissioner) and then will require Commissioner approval to add it into the rules

i. The Commissioner can veto any rule change voted by the League at which point I will return the decision back to you with my reasoning

ii. You can override my veto with 75% majority of non-commissioner votes

d. As Commissioner, I will propose any rule change to the League that is offered, provided it is seconded by another League Member

7. Expansion, Contraction, or Ownership Change

a. Expansion

i. If the League decides to expand, special privileges will be granted to the expansion teams (the League will always expand in pairs).

1. The Expansion Teams receive the first pick in each round of the Draft in Year 1 determined by a coin toss

2. The Expansion Teams receive a 25% Salary Cap increase in Year 1 and a 10% Salary Cap increase in Year 2

b. Contraction

i. The League must maintain a minimum of 8 teams to exist. Reduction below 8 teams results in the dissolution of the League

ii. Reduction must always take place in pairs

iii. In cases of contraction, all of the players on that particular roster will immediately become unrestricted free agents

c. Ownership Change

i. If there is a change in Ownership, the new Owner will have special privileges

1. The new owner will receive the first pick in each round of the Draft in Year 1 (determined by coin toss if need be)

2. The new owner will receive a 10% Salary Cap increase in Year 1

8. Injured Reserve

a. You are entitled to add as many players to injured reserve as you see fit.

b. Adding a player to IR means they are out for the season (you cannot take them off of IR)

c. When on IR, a Player does not count against your Salary Cap total

d. Multi-Year Contracted Players can be retained in this manner without impacting your roster limits

9. Playoffs

a. The number of teams making the playoffs is determined by the number of teams in the League, always paired and never more than 50% of teams

i. 8 teams (4 teams make the playoffs)

ii. 10 teams (4 teams make the playoffs)

iii. 12 teams (6 teams make the playoffs)

b. Teams will be divided into Divisions which will change from year to year based on order of finish

i. Division winners win nothing other than a better seed (worth a half point in playoff ties) or a bye in the 1st Round if needed

ii. Second place wins back their money

iii. This is winner take all other than the second place reimbursement

10. Salary Cap Penalties

a. Each Team will take a Salary Cap penalty for removing players from their roster with more than one year remaining on their contract

i. 1 full year left – Can be released with no cap impact

ii. 2 full years left – Cap hit is ½ of the players last salary on that team

b. All Cap Penalties are incurred the following season and take the form of dead money against the Salary Cap

11. Cost

a. Cost of the League escalates by year

i. Year 1 - $25

ii. Year 2 - $50

iii. Year 3 - $85

iv. Year 4 - $115 where it remains fixed until voted otherwise

12. Scoring

a. Scoring system for Offensive Players will mirror RT Sports current system

b. Scoring system for Defensive Players will be tailored to create similar balance to Offensive system

c. Kicker scoring will be reduced from that found on RT Sports by half

d. Ideally, if possible, Special Teams TD’s by the Kicker’s team will be awarded to the Kicker since no Team Defenses will be Drafted

13. Lineups

a. Lineups will require 13 starters (6 on Offense, 6 on Defense, 1 Kicker)

b. Offense (like RT Sports, any combination that has a minimum of 1 QB and 1 RB as well as a maximum of 1 QB and 2 RBs)

c. Defense (Similar to Offense, you must have 1 player at each level and a maximum of 3 at each level totaling 6 in all)

i. DL – DT or DE

ii. LB – OLB or ILB

iii. Secondary – CB or S

14. Trades

a. No trades are allowed by any team eliminated from the playoffs

b. Trades can be voted down with 2/3 of the votes from all non-participant teams

i. Trades should only be voted down in instances of suspected collusion

15. League Calendar Example

a. April – Major Rule Change votes

b. May – New Divisions are announced

c. June – Franchise Tags are placed

d. Late July – Free Agency begins & Draft lottery occurs (Roster limit expanded to 35)

e. Mid August – Rookie Draft

f. Last Week of August – Roster cut down to 25 & Cap Limits in effect

g. Early September – Week 1 begins

h. Week 14 NFL season – Regular season ends after Week 14 and all trades suspended

i. Week 15 NFL season - Playoffs begin on Week 15

j. Week 16 NFL season – Championship occurs on Week 16
