New style of league? (1 Viewer)

Many will agree that the most fun of the entire season is the draft (other then winning it all, of course.) With that in mind, I've been thinking about different twists on fantasy football to make it more interesting. What I came up with is this - weekly drafts. Obviously you start the season with a draft to fill out a starting roster, BUT the difference is that you are drafting for the 1st week only. After the 1st week, all the players go back into the draft pool and you start all over again. I'd imagine the next draft order to be the inverse of the 1st weeks total points (even though you'd still play head-to-head.)

I see the pros as these. First, drafting is just fun, no matter what. And these drafts would not take as long as regular drafts because you only need to draft you starters. Also, you get to strategize from week to week. A player that may normally be a "1st rounder" may not get drafted there due to a bad match up. Another advantage is that injuries cant ruin your season. An injured player may screw you for that 1 week, but after that, he's gone from your roster.

I see the cons as these. First, you're going to need the right guys for this. You need people who can be reliable to show up every week for the draft. This could be hard to cooridinate. Second, its probably difficult to find a site/software that would allow you to draft every week after the season has started. You may have to improvise. The possible solution to both of these cons might be a slow email draft with set time limits starting on Tuesday. And if an owner knows he'll miss his draft slot, he can just send the commish a list of "pre-drafts."

I could also see a form of this weekly draft using some sort of keeper system. Maybe you can keep one or two players from you roster from week to week. Or maybe the keeper period of time can be set to a certain number of games. You get the idea.

Well, I was just thinking about it and wondering what others might think. I'm just looking for some ways to change things up from the norm and make fantasy football more exciting. Please add comments, but please don't flame.

This exists, kinda - but it isn't a draft.

There are other sites out there that do weekly contests, even daily ones for fantasy sports.

Problems

Uniqueness of the draft. If you do every week is not an "event"

Scheduling- It is often tough for even the best leagues to coordinate a time where 12 people can draft. good luck doing it 12-15 times

Life- I am a person who has a great deal of control over my time (no kids, 75% of work from home, multiple computers) and I have weeks where stuff happens and only really have time to do league basics.

i'm in!!

it wouldnt be that hard to draft every week. if the site software doesnt accomodate the draft every week the use of its message board or a secondary message board would be adequate. you would just need owners that can read and are capable of marking off players already taken. 9-10 rounds shouldnt take that long if you have active owners, but that is the major KEY

A variation of this is the "one and done" contest. The way it works is simple, and there is no need to do a draft each week (which may be the toughest part). Say, for example, your league's starting lineup is 1QB, 2RB, 3WR, 1TE, 1K, 1D. Each owner gets to submit their lineup of whoever they want, but no owner can use any player more than once in a season. So you may pick something like this for week 1...

QB - Michael Vick - vs MIN - great vs run, terrible vs pass (I know, Vick's a RB, but you get the point)

RB - Reggie Bush vs IND

RB - Maurice Jones-Drew vs TEN

WR - Mark Clayton vs CIN

WR - Chris Chambers vs WAS

WR - Larry Fitzgerald vs SF

TE - Alge Crumpler vs MIN

K - Adam Vinatieri vs NO (in a dome)

D - DET vs OAK

After week 1, you can't use any of those players for the rest of the season. The trick here is to plan out your weeks, making sure you use studs in the best matchups possible. You certainly wouldn't want to waste LaDainian Tomlinson in week 1 vs CHI. Sure, it's possible that some owners may take the same exact players in a given week, but it's unlikely. In head-to-head, even if that happens, you just get a tie. Or your league could just be total points. The likelihood of owners picking the same lineups for the entire season is zero to nil.

interesting concept here...

I don't know if this idea would ever work with my group of friends. Our rookie drafts (5 rounds) take about 10 days. Everybody shops every single pick. Last year in 62 picks there were about 47 trades (all pretty much meaningless)

I'd rather see some sort of supplemental draft system. No waiver/free agent system. Instead, every 3 weeks run a brief draft of available players with the seeding based on wins/losses. Owners have the option of releasing 3 players in exchange for 3 draft slots. Owners have the option of keeping players and passing on draft slots.
