Some First Round Targets:
Miami-- The word inside N.F.L. circles is Bill Parcells and Jeff Ireland don't like the quarterbacks at number one overall. So I believe they will try to trade this pick to anyone, but I doubt they will be able to dump it for equal value....Jake Long is a real possibility, but I'd go with Vernon Gholston, if they keep the pick, because he is that rare athlete than can flat out bust it and has the skill set of the elite defensive ends, even though he is not always consistent. He could be Jason Taylor's eventual replacement and I think they know Brian Brohm may fall to round two and they really like Joe Flacco and Chad Henne a lot.
St. Louis -- Virginia's Chris Long should be their pick. The Rams need edge players with their starters getting older and they haven't adequately replaced Grant Wistrom since he left. Long is excellent against the run and that is precisely what this team needs. They could also go the defensive tackle route, but neither of the top defensive tackles play the scheme that suits the Rams needs so they should go with Howie's kid. I think Long has to fit a scheme, otherwise he will be a bust.
Atlanta -- The Falcons are in a total rebuilding mode, so I think they go for defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey. They need a quarterback badly, but none of the top quarterbacks rate high enough this year, so I think they will forsake quarterback until round two, where they'll have several choices, and they will look to add Dorsey to Abraham, Anderson and Boley.
N.E. Patriots -- Everybody has them going cornerback in round one, but the cornerback talent is so deep that they can wait. Scott Pioli lost a Super Bowl a few months ago because his team could not block any of the New York Giants defensive linemen. So I believe Branden Albert would be a great fit because he can play guard or tackle and we all know the Pats love versatile offensive linemen.
New Orleans -- Cornerbacks Leodis McKelvin or Dominque Rodgers-Cromartie should be their first round targets. They need defensive help everywhere, but the need at cornerback is glaring. McKelvin can be also be a special teams standout as a return specialist.
Buffalo -- I think the player they really want is Dominque Rodgers-Cromartie, but if he's off the board they could go with Keith Rivers or Jerrod Mayo. Defensive tackle is a need spot, but Kentwan Balmer does not rate high enough (at #11) and he's better suited as a 3-4 defensive end. Bills love to shock the world on draft day and Mayo or Rivers could make their linebackers real tough with Paul Poz coming back from an arm injury.
Chicago -- Former Vanderbilt offensive tackle Chris Williams should be their man. He has great feet and is the smartest offensive tackle in the draft. Plus, Lovie can pencil him in as a starter at tackle right off the bat.
Houston Texans -- Former Boise offensive tackle Ryan Clady could be there for the Texans to take and, if he is, I'd take him. They could also toy with drafting a tailback in round one, but their scheme devalues running backs and they are in dire need of offensive tackle or cornerback help. Aqib Talib is not fast enough to be picked at #18 and they don't like Michael Jenkins enough at this spot. I'd love to see them pick Clady. He is rising because many think he will eventually grow into to the left tackle spot much like Mike Roos did in Tennessee.
Tampa Bay -- Former Texas wide receiver Limas Sweed would be a great pick, as they need to replace Michael Clayton and Joey Galloway is 36 years old. But they could go quarterback here, with Brian Brohm as a real possibility, because word is Jon Gruden really loves him. Also, don't be too surprised if they "surprise" and go for Kentwan Balmer or Antaun Molden.
Washington -- Former Auburn star Quentin Groves would be a perfect fit, if he checks out medically. They need defensive line help and they lost linebacker Rocky MacIntosh late last year to a bad knee, so Groves would be ideal because he can play the 5 technique in a 4-3 and he can also play outside linebacker in their new hybrid defense they are installing. Wide receiver is also a possibility, but I think they go to the D-line route because they want a big wide receiver and there are no big wide receivers worth the slot.
Seattle -- Mike Holmgren is in his final season and the team wants/covets speed, so DeSean Jackson makes sense, as the Hawks are now a pass first team and they need to replace D.J. Hackett and Deion Branch, who will be PUP'd due to his ACL injury. Jackson is also a special teams ace, with experience in the West Coast offense. East Carolina's speedy and versatile tailback Chris Johnson is also a strong possibility.
Jacksonville -- This team is redoing its defense and Greg Williams needs a cornerback and a defensive end to run his pressure scheme, so I believe Miami's Calais Campbell makes sense at #26. Dark horse pick here could be wide receiver or middle linebacker. If they don't go for secondary help in round one, Greg Williams will push for a cornerback in round two, so he can install his blitz packages.
San Diego -- Eastern Kentucky cornerback Antaun Molden would be a great pick, if he's available. The Chargers could go the running back or offensive tackle route in round one, but they are losing Drayton Florence and need cornerback depth since they have little behind their starters. Molden is raw, but they don't need to start him right away. They need to teach him the inside game at the slot and with Oakland and Denver throwing the ball a lot he will see a lot of snaps as a rookie.
New York Giants -- The Giants will be tempted to jump on Dan Connor and they have a gaping hole still at free safety. But don't be too surprised if they decide to help Eli out more with a big wide receiver like James Hardy, because Moss is a bust and Plaxico Burress has told G.M. Jerry Reese he needs the money love now that he won a Super Bowl. I see this as Plaxico's last year with Big Blue, so Hardy could be groomed to replace him.
