Moved to a 3pm eastern start time. And 1st round is now 10 minutes between picks, instead of 15, which is great.

NFL cuts time between picks in draft's first, second rounds

Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA -- The NFL on Tuesday cut from 15 minutes to 10 the time between picks in the first round of its draft after a 2007 record round of 6 hours and 8 minutes.

It also moved the starting time of the draft from noon ET to 3 p.m. and limited the first day to two rounds instead of three.

"We believe this will make for a more streamlined and efficient draft," commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement issued during the league owners meetings.

The change also applied to the second round, which will go from 10 minutes to seven between choices for next year's draft, which will be held April 26-27 at Radio City Music Hall in New York.

In recent years, teams have often used most of the 15 minutes in the first round, entertaining trade offers or making them.

The time between picks will stay at five minutes for the last five rounds, which will take place on Sunday. That session will start at 10 a.m. instead of 11. Both draft days will be televised by ESPN and the NFL Network.

I think shortening the round times was a good call. 15 minutes to make a pick in the first round was just too long. All that did was encourage people to sit around and wait for the last minute for people to call with possible trade offers. Either you know you want to trade or not.

On the other hand, you know how teams always find that hidden gem in the fourth round because they had a night to figure it out. Now those gems will be third rounders in this new system.

The start time at 3pm and only 2 rounds on day one are all marketing changes. It gives espn time to do 3 hours of predraft talk and keeps the avg. fan interested in the second day of the draft.

They SHOULD start offering alcohol at these drafts. It's a LONG day to go dry.

With the 1st pick in the 2008 NFL draft the Miami Dolphins select . . .

Love the changes.

Now there will be a reason to watch the 2nd day. Also it's better to start at 3pm for people who like to drink, noon is a little early to start getting sauced up.

Cheers to the NFL for taking the fans into consideration.

When did Miami get St. Louis' #1?
Bulger Holt, Bruce, Bennett, SJax, Brian Leonard, vs Cleo Lemon, Jesse Chatman, Marty Booker, and Tedd Ginn...I'm thinking St Louis will win a game eventually...Miami not so much.
As bad as Miami's offensive line is, St. Louis' is worse. And Miami still has a better defense.

That's probably true but the OL was woeful the 1st couple of games...it tells you how bad the rest of the team is when we look at this OL as the strength of the team a few weeks later.

:goodposting: I like the time change - noon was too early for me as I am usually running around with the kids - 3pm is a good start and the bulk of rd 2 when they are in bed - nice job commish!!!!! Now get that rookie contract cap and I will start caling him the best commish ever!!!

Not a fan of the move to 3PM.
 I don't like the start time. Assume that every team uses their full time allotment:

Round 1: 10min x 32 team = 320min

Round 2: 7min x 32 team = 224min

TOTAL Minutes = 544............or roughly 9.1 hours

That means the end of 2nd round would end.....after midnight :) (insert Eric Clapton diddy)

And then those teams have to be ready to start the 3rd round at 10am on Sunday :coffee: ..............Do they drug test the coaches for amphetamines? (including Wade Wilson)

Remember, that 3rd round is going to start at 7am for you West Coasters.

they should do the first round on Friday Night

2nd and third rounds on Saturday

4th through 7th on Sunday

everybody wins

The 3pm thing will change after this yr...

Then the Commish will want to do the draft in France or somewhere else besides America.....

Not a fan of the move to 3PM.

When I saw the changes, I did the same math and was trying to figure out the logic in moving the time to 3:00.My friends and I drive to Pittsburgh to watch the draft at Heinz Field. We leave around 7:30 or 8:00 in the morning and get there at 11:30 or 11:30 just in time for the start of the draft. We watch the first round and then head to another venue (or home depending on the plans) around 6:00 pm. With the 3:00 start time, we will be spending much less time at Heinz Field (if we even go at all). I have a feeling many fans will do the same since it will no longer be a whole day event.
