NFL Matchup on ESPN right now (1 Viewer)

Total agreement on the quality of the show.

Disagreement they should expand it - I suspect the reason it is so crisp and insightful is they can devote a decent amount of time to getting a good half hour out twice a week (I thnk there are only two new ones each week)

If they shot for longer and/or covered every game, I think they'd end up ESPN-ing it and it wouldn't be very good.

It is for the hardcore football fan. Most of the other shows are really designed for the marginal fan who really don't want to understand how to beat the cover two.

Jaws rocks - i've always loved his commentary.

He should have a bigger role on Primetime - at Irvin's expense. I've rarely heard anything useful come out of Irvin's mouth.

this show is great because none of these guys are trying to be "personalities." They are just doing what ALL shows SHOULD do. I agree, best thing going.

Hmm.. Is it still on? TVU coming up now.

Nope... some crappy NASCAR crap... cheking the dos.

Nope... bow hunting big cats or some ####. Gah.

I missed the first 20 minutes. Summary of game match-up predictions would be appreciated. :bag:
The first 20 minutes they talked about Michael Vick, Manning vs. Brady and Carson Palmer vs. BALVick: They showed how he is throwing in certain situatons where he used to run all the time.

Manning vs. Brady: In previous matchups when Peyton has the ball, the Pats have dropped 8 back forcing Manning to make great passes against tight coverage. When Brady has the ball, the Colts have used man on man coverage with a lone safety back to defend against the deep pass. They showed Brady look off the safety (pump fake left) thus moving the safety over opening up the right side of the field for a WR running a post route.

Palmer vs. BAL: Showed how last week the Falcons targeted his knees/legs on plays causing him to lift his front plant leg up before delivery resulting in overthrown or underthrown passes. Chad Johnson made a sick move on DeAngelo Hall on one play, but the ball was overthrown.

I think Jaws is the best. He's great on "The Fantasy Show". Irvin makes any show he's on unwatchable for me. Its so obvious the Ditka, Young and Jackson can't stand the guy. Watch Jackson when Irvin talks. He sits there not even looking at him just waiting for him to stop talking. I like the show on NFLN where its just Fran Charles and Jim Mora. They break down the games real well and there is no talking over one another like on ESPN.

:goodposting: I agree 100%- as much as I hate Irvin, it's still almost uncomfortable to watch knowing how obvious it is that these other guys absolutely hate him... His laughing and attempts to "touch" everyone when his plight or argument has bombed and burned is sickening. The guy really needs to go.

Don't want to hijack, but this sounds like an interesting topic for a new thread if teams are really using this 'strategy'

BRISTOL SHOULD SHOWCASE "MATCHUP"

One of the best football shows on television is ESPN's NFL Matchup, a long-time staple of fall weekends that somehow gets lost in the scheduling shuffle.

Currently, it's on too early on Sunday mornings, starting at 8:30 a.m. in the East. And it's on too late on Saturday nights, beginning at midnight in the West.

Despite less-than-favorable time slots, the show is doing well. Last month, Nunyo Demasio of SI.com heaped praise on the overlooked offering, and on Thursday Marc Narducci of the Philadelphia Inquirer penned a positive piece about the program.

This season the viewers have been tuning in, and in record numbers. Last Sunday's show generated a 1.32 rating, the highest ever in its 13-year history. In 2006, overall ratings are up three percent from 2005.

And for good reason. The show does what no other broadcast attempts, with only the exception of the NFL Films Game of the Week on NFLN; it breaks down the "all-22" coaching film and helps the viewers understand why certain plays work, and why they don't.

It's fascinating stuff. And it gives folks with a genuine thirst for football knowledge a vehicle for learning more about the game.

Our suggestion? Move the thing to 10:00 a.m. Eastern time on Sundays, and give it a whole hour. Better still, make Matchup the first hour of the ESPN Sunday pre-game show. (We realize that this would mean relocating The Sports Reporters. But that show really hasn't been the same without **** Schaap.)

Alternatively (or additionally), find a spot for Matchup on Saturday mornings. We realize that some might bristle at the mere suggestion of interrupting the never-ending SportsCenter loop. But in an era where scores and highlights are instantly available via computers and cell phones, SportsCenter isn't nearly as important as it used to be. Why not give viewers something that they can't get on their phones or their laptops? A full hour of advanced football discourse presented in a way that even the biggest of bozos can understand.

Finally, to anyone out there who might wonder whether we withheld praise for the show until Ron Jaworski ditched his ladies glasses, our official position is that it was coincidental.

This program would be great replacing Sports Center in the 10:30 time slot. Either that or trim NFL countdown to 1:30 hours and play NFL Primetime in the 11:00 - 11:30 slot. Great show that I rarely get to catch.

Tremendous show. Imagine - a couple of football guys actually talking about football. Paolantonio doesn't add much, but I can overlook that. Kind of hope the show stays under the radar so ESPN isn't tempted to 'make improvements' / eff it up.

I turned to espn last night at midnight and the show was listed in that time slot, but nope it was an extended Sportscenter re-run. I went to bed. That irks me. Who cares about sportscenter for the 4th time in a row at midnight on Saturday? But some people actually want to watch NFL matchup. THe dolts at espn don't get it. I try to watch this show whenever its on.

Time Warner Cable sent a mess email about the TV Guide being off during a system upgrade. I've only noticed a few here and there. Well, if ya have them that's why the TV guide is "off".
