NFL | NFL Network being dropped

Fri, 28 Jul 2006 06:24:07 -0700

The Buffalo News reports the NFL Network very likely will be thrown for a loss Tuesday, Aug. 1, locally and nationally when it is expected to be dropped from the cable lineup after Adelphia's long-awaited takeover by Time Warner is completed. Buffalo, Dallas and Cleveland are the three NFL markets that had been getting The NFL Network and will lose it in the Adelphia-Time Warner deal, according to an NFL Network spokesman. "We pleaded to be left on while we continue to negotiate," e-mailed the spokesman, "especially since the first of 52 preseason games and 12 inside training camp shows begin, but Time Warner refused." As noted previously, the NFL Network plans to launch its own marketing campaign to let viewers understand their options, including satellite providers Dish Network and DirecTV on their "most affordable, basic packages."

Tom

I can only imagine the flood of calls cable companies are going to be getting when their subscribers are shut out of regular season games on NFL Network. Directv executives have got to be loving this.

Just get Direct TV. It has had the NFL network from the start and it aint going anywhere.
Bingo.Another reason why Time Warner blows. I hate the cable companies, and TWC is the worst of them all. As a DirecTV customer, I'll never go back to cable.

What does Time/Warner have against the NFL Network?
I think it has to do with NFLN wanting to be part of a basic package vs. a premium channel. That's probably what's holding up negotiations with Cablevision, too. Will see if I can find a link.

What does Time/Warner have against the NFL Network?
no K in place - they will have one, but maybe not till mid-seasonnfl-n holds all the cards, and i'm sure that is the main prob - T-W doesn't want to pay their price.

What does Time/Warner have against the NFL Network?
i think the dispute is whether it's part of their standard package or part of a premium package :(
Wasn't it you that actually called them?I'm not taking it, if NFLC goes dark Tues my Adelphia digital receiver is going out on the street.

I've called my cable company about it several times and they say they are going to be charged 210% over the price they were quoted initially for the Network. That is why they are not going to carry it.

Are you in the North East?

i did call them, but i didn't get that from them. all i got from them was "it's in the works...."

T-W doesn't want to pay their price.
But if the cable company they took over already had it and the subscribers were content with the cost, it doesn't make sense that they would kick out NFL Net over a pricetag.I guess I can see the standard/premium controversy, but this still seems somewhat arbitrary. It seems to me there has to be something bigger at play here, something more insidious.

then they shoulda had vision and SIGNED for the NFL-N b4 the NFL-N got NFL games. Now they are WORTH 210% of their initial price.

Cable co.s SUCK - they are just going to pass whatever price they pay on to their customers with an FCC/PUC approved rate hike - so SIGN already.

Edit - as the NFL season gets closer, the NFL-N aint gonna get CHEAPER.

South DakotaI actually think they should go cheap and when people get addicted to it, then raise the prices.

 Exactly - it's a ploy by the Cable Co to add it later for a big price after people b*tch and then be able to jack the price for cable service.

But it's not even available as part of the premium package. If you have Time-Warner, you can't get the NFL channel at all, at least in my area, unless you get DirecTV.

Thankfully cable viewers in the Dallas market can switch to Comcast more than likely. Unless Comcast is hiding something about becoming TW here.

EDIT: Wow, I just checked. TW is taking over Comcast here starting August 1. I guess it's time to find a dish provider.

Thanks Joffer and FunkyPlutos for the reply, although it wasn't what I wanted to hear.

Shouldn't they have to notify us if they are dropping a Channel. I mean I have gotten notices saying some thing like starting next month we will be carrying 4 new food channels and moving such and such channels off the schedule.

It was never sports so I never cared. Except when they took off channel 17 in Phila and channel 5 &11 from Ny over the years.

It is a point in the negotiations. Cable Companies want to take it on as premium so they can charge extra. NFLN wants to come on as part of a broader tier so more people get it and they don't have to elect it. This is the same thing that happened in NY with the YES Network. It finally did come as part of an existing package -- halway through baseball season.

 and it invalidates all old contracts. you can drop T-W and get a different cable co or satellite as soon as they change owners.

The NFL is preparing to launch a $100 million attack ad campaign over the next six months in an attempt to force cable TV operators to carry its NFL Network channel, which will begin airing regular-season games in November.

If the cable providers don't sign up, the NFL will urge consumers to switch to satellite TV operators that carry the channel, NFL Network spokesman Seth Palansky says.

The 2½-year-old channel also has basic cable and/or digital distribution deals with at least 75 cable operators, including Comcast, the nation's top cable provider, and reaches 41 million homes. With the NFL Network airing regular-season games beginning Thanksgiving night, the league thinks it has the leverage to force its way into 25 million more homes this season. The TV, radio, print and magazine ads, which will target cable operators by name, could begin as early as next week, Palansky says.

"We think it's asinine that Time Warner (the nation's No. 2 cable provider) carries 12 shopping channels and 50 other channels you don't want — but can't find room for one dedicated to the most popular sport in this country," Palansky says. "We're replacing the kid gloves with bare knuckles."

One ad aimed at Time Warner says, "Don't let Time Warner ruin your football season. You'll miss NFL games if you don't call and demand NFL Network now." Another targeting Cablevision, a provider in metro New York, warns, "Don't let Cablevision shut you out." The ad lists the channel's games and a toll-free number for NFL Network.

Time Warner Cable spokesman Mark Harrad says it "is still having discussions with the NFL Network." Cablevision's Marie Stenberg declined to comment.

Once again, if you want to guarantee yourself all the NFL games you can get, you gotta go with DirecTV. They are wubbin' this!

FYI,Here in Atlanta GA, if you want the NFL network through Comcast, you DO have to up-grade to a Premium package.

I've held off up-grading so far, but come the regular season, I guess I'll be out a few more $ to Comcast.... :(

Ok I moved from Basic Broadcast to Digital Basic which included NFLC. Plus we also got the Digital basic Plus. My wife wanted it for all the movies, I told her it was extra, and reluctently agreed when I saw it included the Fox Sporst North, East, South and West. ;) Plus college sports.

Maybe I'm covered?

You have to upgrade to a higher package in Denver with Comcast, too, but it is an "ala carte" add-on to a digitasl package that costs something like 4.99 per month and you then also get all those really cool extra Discovery channels (extra history, military, science, etc channels)

When we got YES, they moved the stations like FoxSports form the level everyone got to a more expensive tier. That tier also gives you Starz, Encore, etc -- sounds like what you have. I'm sure that's where NFLN wants to be for us, too. So did you tell your wife the real reason you upgraded or that you wanted her to have the movies? :)

Are you serious 4,99, that's all. Then we don't have to switch? I get my internet from Adelphia too and if you get both, you save money.

same with Comcast - and comcast's IN service is a friggin' dream.

lets put it this way the digatal receivers are in my Tv room and my sons Tv room and not in the bedroom, where she watches Tv from July till after the Pro bowl. Her choice.

I am still hoping Verizon comes into my neighborhood. It's not looking good, but satellite isn't an option, so I am probably screwed.

I haven't heard of this Adelphia takeover stuff. It doesn't mention other parts of NY, are we OK or just not listed? anyone know?

The problem with ESPN is that it wastes a lot of time airing things other than Football and Poker.

 agreed!I went with DirecTv in '04 just for The Ticket. Since then they have been MILES ahead of Cable in Customer Service and just as good,if not better,in programming. With the launch of their new satelites the HD programming should improve significantly. Pay your bill on time you get on their "A" list and they can't do enough to make you happy.

Massachusetts checking in (but not a Pats fan, so I'm cool) Charter communications dropped it sometime late last year or early this year. Anyone else have Charter and if so have heard any response from them about this?

You guys are starting to worry me about the NFL Network. Last night, for the first time, the NFL Network went black (I've got Comcast Digital Cable - SE Lower Michigan.) Fortunately, this morning, it's back on, but I'm starting to wonder if I am going to lose it again come Tuesday.

What gets me is how my Cable bill has been nickle & diming me to death.

First came Digital cable - extra few $ per month + rental fee for box & remote.

Then came HD upgrade - few more $ per month + silghtly more $ for HD box & remote.

Now for the NFL-N I'll need to up-grade my Digital package - few more $ per month.

I pulled out some old Cable bills from the good old analog only days and compared that to what I'll be paying shortly.

It's a $45.00 per month difference.

I could give a rats rear end about all the extra channels that go along with the up-grades. The NFL in HD & NFL-N is what I want.

So for me, it's a $540.00 per year increase...just to get the NFL in HD & NFL-N. :(

This quote is on the money. There are so many garbage channels available on Time Warner (which I currently have but will be losing in a few weeks) and they won't add a channel that appeals to a very strong and powerful demographic. Asinine is being kind. I'm moving in a few weeks and will be losing Time Warner and getting Charter. Charter previously had The NFL Network but no longer does. When I spoke to a Charter rep they said they're still in negotiations and hope to have it re-added to their package by Sept. 1.

We'll see.

It's all about the Benjamins buddy. Somehow, someway, I don't think the 12 shopping channels added together, are charging Time Warner as much as NFL-N wants.
