When I heard today that the Redskins were going to turn the reins over to Jason Campbell after seeing that Mark Brunell would not lead them to the playoffs, my initial thoughts were that he was going to be eaten alive (youngster / no experience - the usual stuff that we have been fed in recent years)...
But after thinking about it for a while and recalling the "relative" and recent successes of Roethlisberger / EManning / Palmer and lately Rivers / Romo / Smith / Leinart / Frye / Gradkowski / Grossman / Young... I wondered if it had always been the case? - i.e. having alot of young stars at the QB position and that was the first time I noticed it... or if a trend is developing where coaches would rather have an inexperience one calling the plays with their natural athletism (arm strength / elusiveness / etc.) taking over... or if it was just a coincidence presently...
I took a snapshot of the 32 starters as of today... and surprinsingly enough - even with dinosaurs like Favre & Johnson on board - the NFL average age for a starting QB is less than 28 years old...
In fact, I'm trying to recall if it's a common state (i.e. guys like Marino / Elway / Kelly starting at a young age at the same time) or if it's just becoming a youngster position?
Thoughts...
