NFL reviewing Suh's hit on Delhomme (2 Viewers)

Lee Roy Selmon was a beast and he wouldn't do anything like that. He never drew a personal foul call in his entire career.Where is he now? The Hall of Fame. Grow up Suh, and take those who think it's no big deal with you to football school.
I'll bet this is music to the ears of Lions fan. How long as it been since there was anything about that team to hate? Or even respect?Suh...whatever he is, has stopped the laughter.

Deacon Jones was a beast and tore people's heads off regularly. Takes all kinds to make a world. For my own preferences, give me the nasty ones on my favorite team's defense.
 Half of what makes these types of guys good is the intimidation factor. If you have the opposition weary of your capabilities, you are half way to winning the battle in the trenches.

No kidding, huh?Just sniffing the possibility of having both offensive and defensive ROY's would be enough to bring me back to the stadium. I still don't think the team is doing quite enough to dishonor the memory of Matt Millen, but baby steps.

I was just thinking the same thing. QBs are now going to be worried about a Lion defender taking their head off. Who would have thunk it?

No, it doesn't. That kind of play ruins careers. Selmon was a vicious competitor, but he understood the rules of the game. I think the rules were different for Jones, anyway. Suh is still learning. The NFL isn't the UFC. Suh will learn how to play and I doubt you'll see those kinds of theatrics during the regular season. If he tried that with Peyton Manning the NFL would ship him off to Guantanamo.

Selmon was intimidating because of his actual play, not antics that can hurt someone for no reason. We think of football as a hobby and a game, but this is their livelihood. It's a business. It's not manly to cheat. Sorry.

For me, Stafford stopped the laughter by looking like a dangerous quarterback so far and best has stopped the laughter by looking like a homerun threat.

Welcome to the Roger Gooddell era of the NFL. He's reached out to the non-traditional football fans and has found them in droves.

Any play that even appears aggressive draws crowds claiming it was excessive and dirty clamoring for fines and/or suspensions.

15 yards for the facemask is the only thing to see here. If the whistle hasn't blown the rest is just good clean football.
This is ridiculous. He was standing over top of a defenseless QB from behind and not only grabbed his face mask so hard he turned it sideways. He then wrapped his entire arm around the helmet and twisted it in a motion much like he was trying to open a giant bottle of soda. It was excessive by every definition of the word and more importantly every definition of the rules. It should be fined.
Considering that excessive is what is ridiculous and what has changed in the Gooddell era.[Outside of the facemasking penalty he did exactly what every DL in the league should do it that situation. Put the ballcarrier on the ground and inflict as much pain and intimidation as possible.

Again, outside of grabbing the mask, I'd like to know what exactly was illegal about that play other than it appeared "aggressive", "excessive" and/or "scary" which seems to be enough for Gooddell these days.
Easy there Leonidas.

No. I'll give you, Stafford and Best have looked great. I think the Lions offense is ready to shine this year. But I'm not talking about a pat on the head sort of "these guys don't suck" stopping the laughter. I'm talking about pucker-factor. The Lions haven't had that on defense in forever.

Seemed like a dirty play, unnecessary at any rate. I'd think a small fine would be in order just to keep everyone honest.

It doesn't really impress me when a bigger, stronger player manhandles a smaller player in a defenseless position. If he starts throwing around 300 pound linemen, then I'll be impressed. Otherwise is just poor sportsmanship.

On the lack of Cleveland reaction...

First, I agree with a previous poster that the OL didn't see it.

Second, it's a freaking preseason game. I'm sure everyone would have been much happier if Cleveland got in Suh's face, started an altercation and then a Browns player went cheap on Stafford.

Third, Delhomme was fine and they scored a TD two plays later. Why do something stupid in a preseason game to get yourself fined? Retaliating players always get it worse.

As a Browns fan, I don't know whether I'd want them to go after him or not. Part of me would want to see them respond and retaliate, but the other part just thinks it is a bad idea in the preseason. Plus these two teams get matched up over and over again in the preseason and these games don't need bad blood; they need to be over as quickly as possible.

The thing about the hit/hip toss, which was no-doubt excessive, was that it looked to me like he was trying to hurt Jake...which is unneccesary and when you are already putting him in a position to inflict pain by grabbing his facemask and twisting his neck, could be criminal...just ask Todd Bertuzzi what happens when you take things too far.

If someone cuts his legs and tears up his knee, then will all of you that tout the "Man's Game" be happy to say "rub some dirt on it" and move on? Nope, you'll be #####ing about a cheap shot into his knees and how it affects his career, etc...

Look, Suh is a great, great prospect and should have a bright future in the league, but if he does that to someone other than a washed up Jake Delhomme, there will be retaliation and he will likely miss games one way or another.

For Christ sakes..he threw Jake down.

If Suh comes unblocked from the blind side at full speed and pile drives Jake into the turf and lands on him with all of his 305 lbs and breaks a couple of Jakes ribs or collarbone it is OK because it was a "legal" hit.

God forbid he grabs him up high and throws him down. That will be one of the easiest sacks Delhomme will endure this year. Jake could have pulled a hammy the way he popped up and ran after the ref.

I see you're from Detroit, so let's review the same play but replace your #1 pick from this year in Suh with some random Browns DT and replace Delhomme with your #1 pick from last year in Stafford and see if you feel the same way.I understand you're salty that you finally have a #1 pick and people are calling words like "dirty" instead of "bust" but you gotta take off the fan goggles. Browns fans don't have any real investment in Delhomme so that's not the issue. Uncalled-for play, and one that will get him a fine every time he does it.

yeah, because getting your head twisted around and thrown down at the same time is nothing like getting blindsided, except it is illegal...hence the penalty and subsequent fine.I understand where you are coming from, it is football, but it was also a cheap shot that was unneccessary and he is lucky it was Delhomme instead of Manning or Brady or he may not be in the lineup for week 1.I was at the game where he all but broke Gabbert's ankle last year in a rain storm on a similar play where he twisted him down with his leg pinned under his weight, I've seen the man in person and he is a beast, but he took it too far and should be fined.

:goodposting: I didn't see the play before reading this thread.... but from the reaction of some people, I thought Suh shot Jake with a sawed off shotgun, then drove to his house and put a bullet in Jake's dog.

Yes, because that doesn't involve going for his head or neck.

:moneybag: I honestly can't believe people

I'll bet a lot of teams took notice of that hit

I'll bet you O-lines are just waiting for him to cross the line on their Q?B and they'll go at him

seriously, watch it again.

first he facemasks Delhomme. no biggy.

then his hand slips off, and he grabs onto his facemask with both hands.

then he twists his head, and throws him to the ground.

again, i'm not saying he was intentionally trying to hurt Delhomme, or that it wasn't just a heat of the battle type-thing, but if that wasn't an illegal tackle, i don't know what is.

and if you think that's just part of the game in 2010, you are kidding yourself.

Well..if you are going to get a flag then get your moneys worth. Compared to that Suh gently cradled Jake to the ground like he was tucking a baby into a crib.

From that angle, and in slow-motion, it looks like on the "throw down" Suh was grasping for Jake's shoulder pad and mostly got his jersey. From other angles it looked more like he had both hands on Jake's face mask and was twisting his head off.

Since he was grasping at his shoulder pad, that changes my mind a little bit. I no longer think he was trying to break Jake's neck.

Definite face mask and personal foul since his knee was already down, but I'm not so sure about a fine anymore.

EDIT:

You can also see Suh's right hand come off of Jake's face mask and it goes on top of his left hand at Jake's shoulder. It really appears as though both hands are on Jake's shoulder as he throws him to the ground. This makes a huge difference in my mind, since I first thought he threw him down with both hands on his helmet/face mask.

Pic - hand moves to shoulder

I agree..and from that angle you can tell that Suh has no idea that Jake is shoveling the ball. 15 yards may have been a bit much if the refs watched that replay. As John Gruden would say "That is just good, physical football"

For those that didn't see it, KvB got a 15 yarded penalty for punching Delhomme in the head.
Did Delhomme have his helmet on? A punch to the helmet does not hurt.
Yeah, KvB was rushing the passer and was being steered to the side by a lineman and couldn't get a hit on Jake, so he cocked his arm back and gave him a full force open palm shot to the side of the head. It likely didn't hurt, but it rocked Jake's head back pretty good. I actually think that was KvB's 3rd roughing the pass penalty this preseason.

There's probably a good reason for not intervening, and it's not fear of a rookie. It's the coaching staff that doesn't want to see stupid mistakes that cost the team yards (or the opportunity to get yards on a bonehead penalty by the other team). If the other team does something stupid, you don't retaliate-- you let the refs retaliate. Like someone already said here, it's the one who responds who usually gets the worst of the refs ire.For all the flowery talk about gladiators and war that we sometimes hear about football...it's just a game played by millionaires who want to keep their careers going as long as possible to make as much money as possible. You have more loyalty to your team than they do. You buy team gear-- they get free gear and will happily put on a rival's gear for a bigger paycheck. They want to perform well and not get hurt. Yes, they want to win...but they really want to make as much money as possible.

Players don't like to see other players get thrown around and possibly injured. They know it can happen to them. They don't "man up" by trying to actually hurt the other guy. They "man up" buy purchasing luxury cars and mansions for their families while we play pretend football on computers. I think some people don't understand what's really happening on the field.

Suh will figure it out. If he learns how to play the game properly he'll be a force for a decade.

It's probably just temporary, but you have to stop laughing to whine properly.

Some fine Zapruder work in this thread.

Love the aggressiveness from Suh, and Detroit fans are probably even giddier. I don't buy into the hyperbole that he was trying to rip Delhomme's head off, though it's definitely a facemask foul. All part of the game.

I seen the play and knew somewhat what to expect, but was kinda shocked that it wasnt being reported as fines not yet defined (something to that effect). Im not trying to sound that im all for safety either, A strong shoulder from the blind side is pure Football!

Its the way the toss, throwdown or whatever it was appeared (I was already like WT* with the head twist)

p.s. Id keep an ear out for the "Suh rule" where time is called to review questionable sportsmanship play...

For the record, I'm not saying there was intent to injury. However, you don't need intent to injure to, in fact, cause injury. It also doesn't make the play any less reckless. It was what it was, a reckless play that is going to get him flagged and fined, unless he repeats the behavior and/or does it to the wrong QB. Can get away with doing it to Delhomme, but do that to Rodgers and he'll get an ejection for his efforts.

Also, 79 didn't catch wind of it until the throw down. Missed the facemask and everything in between. You want him going after your franchise DT for that?

Not sure if you're implying that the hit on Gabbert was dirty, but it does give me an excuse to link this...
GBR!

Wholeheartedly agree with the bolded.Thing is we think those are different people.

Dude should be glad it wasn't the Titans. Fisher probably would have had him killed.

Have honestly never understood why teams don't take the next play and chop block a defensive lineman who does something like this. Especially in the preseason. Third play in a row he's got a backup guard angling for his ACL and he's gonna get the message that if he wants to have a career in the NFL he might want to play within the rules.
