Sling Media, the early leaders in place-shifting technology have scored a touchdown - they are working with DirecTV on a new offering called SuperCast.

As part of this deal, viewers can get online streams of NFL games every Sunday. The deal has been rumored for a while, but it has been confirmed by a company spokesperson. I couldn’t get the details last night since it was very late, but we spoke to the company and here is the lowdown.

First of all you don’t need a Sling Player to get this video package and you don’t need the Sling software. The video steams are accessed with a browser. If you are a DirecTV/NFL Sunday (HD) package customer, then you get access to the games the web for free as part of your package.
When I first read the headline, I thought this was great! I'd gladly pay for Sunday Ticket if I could watch on my computer and/or stream to my SlingBox without having to subscribe to DirectTV (something that is literally impossible for me being in NYC, and I know others have their own issues).Reports seem to suggest that this is for subscribers only, but the wording - "if you're a ... customer, then you get [them] ... for free as part of your package" - suggests that maybe there is room for a separate paid subscription.

One can hope, right?

[ By the way, not only can I not Sunday Ticket because I can't get DirectTV, but since my only choice is Time Warner, I also can't get NFL Network. There are millions of us in NYC in the same situation. GRRR. ]

For those traveling or not near a TV.
Uh, yeah, thanks it was obviously a bit of a rhetorical question. I'm not questioning that this might be nice if you're already a subscriber. My point was that this is a lost opportunity to sell to a much larger audience that have a computer and Internet connection but not DirectTV. A relatively small % are DirectTV NFL Sunday Ticket subscribers, and a smaller % of that group is going to be traveling or not near a TV on Sunday.

They would much rather sell you a DirecTV dish and NFL package than letting you just purchase the online features. Not to mention the NFL would want a bigger cut of the pie, if they even would let them do it that way. 80% of DirecTV's business plan is built around that NFL monopoly of theirs.

Of course but like I said already there are many reasons many people can't get DirectTV even if they wanted to. I guess there are enough of their customers who are only there because of the NFL, but still... would be nice. I can still hope.Interesting that the NFL didn't do a deal itself with Sling or another provider to show games online...

Very cool - going to check that out this weekend. How's the quality?
Mixed, and dependant on the bandwidth of the uploader. None that I have seen look too good blown up to full screen, but they look watchable with a screen about 1/4 the size of my screen. Not the greatest by far and if you are used to HD, you'll probably be dissapointed. But given that it's free, it's more than adequate for my needs.

Last season you could order a streaming NFL Sunday Ticket package if you lived outside of the United States, without having a DirectTV subscription.

I would guess that they are testing the streaming broadcasts for functionality and demand and if they like what they see you can expect that within a year or two it will be available as a stand alone package.

I was watching 4 games at once this past weekend, 2 on tv and 2 on 2 different laptops. But your right, you need to keep the window size down for optimal clarity. I open them to about 1/4 or 1/3 of the screen and keep another stat tracker window open on the rest of the screen. The stat trackers are usally updated quicker though than the delayed sopcast, which is usually a minute or so behind.

My wife thinks I am nuts. I am suprisingly able to keep track of everything going on in all 4 games.

I have Directv and the superfan Sunday ticket. How do I access this package for my computer, to watch multiple games, and can I watch this on a cell phone, say a TREO?

Also, who's to say that you can't allow a friend to watch games on their computers if you give them your login information?

Just saying.

Thanks

This has nothing to do with Sunday Ticket or Directv. This is a peer-to-peer service where people upload the games shown in their area, for free streaming to anyone.Go here:

http://streamednfl.blogspot.com/

Soon there will be "channel" URLs listed where it now says "covered", under each game. These will just be some number, like 6116 or something. Download and install the SopCast player and click on the channel of the game you want to watch and it should launch the player app and begin to buffer the feed. In 30 seconds or so, the broadcast should begin. There have been some issues the first 2 weeks where listed strams were non-functional. Nothing we as viewers can do about that, I guess there were some problems with the uploader. But the majortiy should be operational.

Sopcast is a free peer to peer software where you can watch video that others are broadcasting. Obviously, someone needs to be broadcasting the video for you to watch, but nfl games are always brodcasted (sometimes on multiple channels). The other link mentioned is just a guide to the games. Just like a web site, you need an address to go to to view the games.edit: yah, what he said above.

I must have misread the OP, who said this is available through DirectV. I am familiar with SOPcast, but I thought the OP said that Directv is offering a SUPERCAST on the internet for NFL SUnday ticket holders. Am I wrong?

:goodposting: In summary:

If you are a DirecTV Sunday Ticket Superfan subscriber you can log on to DirecTV.com and watch games - if you are away from home or want to have multiple games going at once. The email I got from DirecTV explained that it was for Superfan subscribers (I am one).

If you are not a subscriber, there are some other services available - follow the links above.

No, you are right. The sopcast is just a tangent that the thread went into. You replied to one of my posts so that is why are thought you were referring to sopcast instead of the direct TV broadcast. If no one knows, I would imagine you could give Direct TV a ring since you are an actual subscriber, and then maybe fill the rest of us in with what you find out.

With DIRECTV SUPERCAST, you get live streams of every NFL SUNDAY TICKET game right on your PC, anywhere in the world. Live streams of every NFL SUNDAY TICKET™ game, plus the Red Zone Channel Real-time player and team stats and scores Highlights from every game as they happen All right on your PC, anywhere in the world. Now, i would think you could get a userID and a password from a friend, since it says you can log on anywhere in the world. So those of you who don't have directv better call your buddies.

You know you can watch two games on each laptop, right?Go into options in the SopCast player, and uncheck the box that says "limit to one game at a time" or something to that effect.
