But I have NO CLUE what the supplemental draft is all about....What in the world is this? Where were these players during the original draft? and who set up this whole process to begin with...?
The supplemental draft covers players that are juniors, or I suppose 3rd year sophomores, that didn't declare for the draft, that have had things change since the time came to declare for the draft. Academic, maybe they changed their mind, whatever. They renounce college eligibility, can play this year, but missed the draft. So they have a supplemental draft. Essentially, a draft for JUST those players. Teams put in their bid, blind. Whoever bids the highest round pick, wins the player, and gives up the pick the following year. So if some team bids a 3rd rounder for Harvey Unga, and no other team bids a 3rd, that team gets him, and gives up a 3rd next year. I believe, but not 100% on this, that the tiebreakers go by this years draft slot. So if the Rams bid a 3rd, it trumps any other teams 3rd rounder, because they have the worst record from 2009.
Random question but has any huge player ever changed his mind and come out through the supplemental draft? e.g. If Jake Locker was to come out this year? Has anyone ever given up a first for a player?

brian bosworth, bernie kosar, cris carter, steve walsh, bobby humphrey, timm rosenbach, rob moore, dave brown, mike wahle, jamal williams. many of them were 1st rounders.some of the reasons for late declaring: kicked off team, tested positive for drugs (roids i imagine); graduated earlier than expected; didn't want to go in the main draft. bernie kosar is probably the most interesting off all of these ... wanted to sign with cleveland. passed on the draft and then was taken. giants, vikes among teams that were pissed.
Thanks to both of you for your answers. As a relatively young man and brit I've been doing all I can to learn about the NFL but a lot of the history I still don't know about.
Even as a Brit I still remember screaming at the newspaper (as it was in those days) for the Hawks to trade the Boz pick when they "won" the lottery. Taking a ransom for that could hav changed the direction of the frnchise for 20 years.
