Niagara Falls (1 Viewer)

If you stay in Niagara Falls Canada, make sure you get a room with a good view of the falls.

Niagara-On-The-Lake has some wineries worth visiting if you like that kind of thing.  Ice wine is their specialty.

Buffalo has about 4 fast dining options worth mentioning

Andersons - very good roast beef and custard

Teds - good hot dogs and hamburgers, but some locations are a little run down

Jim Steak Out - very greasy steak hoagies

Mighty Taco - locals love it and swear by it, but if you aren't a local and didn't grow up eating it, it is barely edible.

If I wanted to get THE Beef on weck, where would I go
Schwabi's is probably the most famous, but if you want the best overall restaurant to eat at that also serves a mean beef-on-weck, Id recommend Lake Effect Diner (was featured on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives) - their food is off-the-hook good.

Anchor Bar is also in Buffalo if you want to get the original "Buffalo Wings". They're aight, but mostly just one of those things you do to say you did it.

For a true Lake Effect experience, show up at like 1 AM on a Saturday night/Sunday morning when UB is in session.

If I end up there, it's just because my wife wants to see the actual falls. I've been before, but she grew up in Utah and has never been in that area. We're going to be in Pittsburgh and are then spending some time in the Finger Lakes but have a day in between, so I figured I'd detour up there so she can see the Falls.

My plan is basically to drive in from Pittsburgh in the afternoon. Probably stop on the way at Anchor Bar just because I like to support places that originate a dish I like (I've been to Lombardi's, Pat's, Phillippe's, Sloppy Joe's, etc.)  Head into Niagara Falls mid afternoon, ride the Maid of the Mist, maybe grab dinner at Griffon Pub, piss away a few bucks at the Seneca Casino. I have a reservation for the night at The Giacomo, which seems to be well-reviewed. Up early and driving out by 9 AM.

Any problems with this, locals?

No longer operating if I heard correctly.

The Maid of the Mist is still operational from the US side as far as I know.  They used to have operations on the Canadian side but lost their contract a few years ago.

How the hell did they let that happen?  It's one of the biggest tourist attractions available at the Falls and there has got to be so many more potential customers on the Canadian side.

Anchor Bar is garbage

maybe stop there for a drink, but I'd head a block away to Gabriel's Gate for their wings.

Lots of free parking on the US side
True?

I am going to spend the better part of a day there next week on the way to Canada, check out the sites and watch the fireworks at night.

what is the best strategy for parking and getting around on the Canadian side?

There is still a company doing the same routes on the Canadian side, it's just not the Maid of the Mist brand/boats anymore.

Taking the wife and kids here in late June.  Anyone been here recently?  It looks like the Hilton is under construction.  Any recommendations on where to stay with two daughters (11 and 14 years)?

Wax museums?  Meh.

To be honest, I'm more excited to hit Hershey and Gettysburg but the wife seems intent on arriving in late afternoon here, staying two nights.  Is two nights too much here or is it a good idea?

Spend more time in Hersey and Gettysburg. Make sure to do a guided tour at Gettysburg, the one where the guide drives you around in your own vehicle is well worth the money.

Really?  I didn't even know that was a thing.  Thank you.   Thanks for the tip as well.   The history stuff is far more interesting to me, but I'm only 1 of 4 on the vacation.  I think the kids would get restless walking about the falls for two days.

Yea the Registered tour guide at Gettysburg is the way to go. It keeps the kids interested as well. I think you may have to set that up beforehand because I remember talking to our guide as to the time to meet and where before we got there. We did a three hour tour and it was just enough so that my daughter didn’t get bored. I could have stayed there s week. We studied Gettysburg my entire second semester junior year in high school.

Cool thing about our guide was he knew we were from Michigan so he included a lot of extra information and locations of Michigan units that were in the battle. If you have a relative that fought there, they will take you to the spots they were at as well.

I would actually like to pop back up there for this:

Anyone eat at the Copacabana Brazilian Steakhouse?  Our family likes a steak, even the kids.  How's the prices here?  Crazy?

Used to work here in University... Quality is good, cold buffet is solid.

But, no 'steak' .  It's basically an all you can eat meat buffet w the meats carved at your table. Good selection and very filling. The cornbread is (was) great too, but haven't been in a while. The waitresses are smoldering hot and no way that's changed.

W the US dollar strong rite now it's definitely worth going.

Koutouki is a great Greek place. A bit upscale but solid. Napoli is solid Italian. Weinkeller excellent.

You're minutes from Niagara on the Lake. I live there. Great place to take the family for the day. Busy but quiet, quaint, great wineries and 3 solid breweries. The Exchange is "high end" but they make a lot of rarer/speciality beers. Oast and silversmith more approachable.

IMO, two days alone for the falls themselves is overkill.  You could certainly spend 2 days in the area, can hike the gorge, go to Niagara-on-the-Lake, etc., to fill the time, but you can do pretty much the general Niagara Falls experience in like a half day
