Niners offseason thread (1 Viewer)

Jason Wood--

#1. Marvel Smith signed for backup OT money, not this big $$ deal Wood tries to portray. Jeez. Worth the money? Yah, he's being paid Barry Sims money and is already an ugrade, lol.

#2. Manny Lawson was not allowed to "pin his ears back" last year like Jason says. He was used on base downs and in coverage. He was pulled for Rod Green in obvious passing situations. Nolan (mis)used him like JPete. This will be his first chance to rush the passer consistently.

#3. Dashon will have competition...from Reggie Smith.

:lmao:

I've been know to have dreams/premonitions that have upon occassion come true.I actually had this dream the other night and think it could possibly happen. It involved none other than the I'm retired/no,I'm not retired Brett Favre. I had the dream that he turned down playing for the Vikes because he wanted to sit this year and get fully healed. He still believes he has at least 2-3 years of good play in him and I happen to agree.

So, as the dream progressed Brett went to the 49ers brass and said he would consider coming out of retirement for a 2 yr. contract and he would only do that if Mike Holgren were the head coach. The 49ers brass jump all over that deal. So there you have it. 2010, Singletary is demoted to defensive coordinator and Mike Holmgren is given the head coaches job.

Shaun Hill and Alex Smith are let go and they keep Nate Davis. They use their 2 first round picks and get their top graded QB in the draft and he'll have 2 years to sit and learn from Favre. Seemed to work out pretty good for Aaron Rodgers. Nate Davis would fill in should Brett miss any time. They're gonna want their new franchise QB to sit and learn everything he can for the next 2 years.

Since the Niners now have Favre and Holmgren for 2010 they go out and win the division and one playoff game. After Favre's contract is up he is persuaded to stick around with the 49ers and takes over as the new QB's coach. Get this now this is the dream I had the other night and it was quite vivid and while it's only a dream I could see this scenario come to fruition. So don't be surprised when you see Brett Favre in a 49ers uniform next year throwing td passes to Michael Crabtree while Holmgrem smiles and claps on the sideline as the new head coach. Singletary won't be a happy camper but he'll take it in stride as a professional but you might see him somewhere on the sidelines dropping his pants for some under-achieving 49ers player, cough..... Vernon

Regarding the QB battle, everything I've heard/read from the beat writers is that there is essentially no way the 49ers can begin the year with Alex Smith as their starter. The thinking goes that he already is in such a hole of public opinion, if ANYTHING goes wrong he'll get booed off of the field and the pressure will be on to insert Hill. However, if Hill starts the season and either tanks or gets hurt, Alex comes in with little pressure on him. If Hill does well, then great.

It's preseason. It was against the 3rd string Raiders defense. But Nate Davis looked better than both Hill and Smith. He went 6/11 for 62 yards and a touchdown.

I hope he continues to improve in practice.

He even looked sharp throwing the ball away. There were a few times where he just threw the ball out of bounds rather than try to force something as pressure was getting to him. Again, it's not really anything to go off (heck, Dorsey looked great once upon a time in preseason), but it's a nice start.

ETA - IIRC, he led SF to 18 of its 21 points scored. Even converted a 2 point conversion with a nice throw. Showed a strong, accurate arm, was able to squeeze throws in a small window and even throw on the run.

Adam Scheftler has reported Hill will be the starter after last game's performance.

If that's true, I'm a bit surprised it didn't take at least one more preseason game, but neither guy looked impressive. Might as well go with Shaun until defenses figure him out.

I really wish we had traded the Crabtree pick plus for Cutler.

I seriously doubt that is anything other than a educated guess. Maiocco says Singletary wants longer to consider:
Singletary wants longer to consider

Coach Mike Singletary said he's not ready to name a starting quarterback, as he continues to mull over the decision with his staff.

Quarterback Alex Smith sustained a right thumb sprain while making a tackle after the interception. He's listed as day-to-day. Singletary said the injury will have no impact on his decision: Smith or Shaun Hill?

"I have to look at some more film," Singletary said. "It takes me a little longer than some other people. I think attention to detail is key. That's why."

The starters are scheduled to see their longest playing time in the upcoming game against the Cowboys, Singletary said. A decision at QB could be made at some point this week, though Singletary has not announced a timetable.

After watching the film of the 49ers' 21-20 win over the Raiders, Singletary's view of the QB play was unchanged.

"It was nothing great," he said. "I just feel it's one of those things, you have to look at the mechanics and some of the small things, and other ways they got better."

That makes a lot more sense. Neither Smith nor Hill outplayed the other, so I really can't imagine a starter would be named after that game. If they both continue to toil in mediocrity then I imagine Hill will be named the starter just out of respect for what he did last year.

Homers or others, what did you guys think of the Raiders game?

I didn't like seeing Vernon drop a couple of passes. I thought Alex Smith looked very slightly better than Hill, though I still think neither one is going to wow the team.

I thought SF's line didn't click every play, but for the most part they absolutely dominated the trenches. Coffee looked like he'll make a fine backup but I can't wait to see what Gore will do if that line keeps up its play!

Here's an interesting tidbit:

The Cowboys, a team many people consider to be a strong rushing team this year, had 127 yards vs. Oakland.

The Niners had 275 rushing yards vs. Oakland (Coffee had 127).

According to ESPN, Warner called a press conference on Friday and is expected to retire. If so, is AZ still the favorite in the NFC West?

If Warner retires I say the division is up for grabs between the Cards and the Niners. Seattle still finishes 3rd. Rams have no hope unless they pull an ungodly miracle like the year they won it all with Warner. We beat the Cardinals twice last year with Warner playing so I think we could beat Leinart twice. We have two first round picks this year and should be able to get two guys who'll start right away. I'd like to see us get OL and secondary in the first round. Although I'm still not a big Alex Smith I think he'll play better than Leinart. Smith had 18 td's starting 10 games. If he plays all 16 I could see him in the 23-25 td range. Hopefully Crabtree will start to emerge and help Smith's numbers. V Davis should have another good year as he should be a top 3 TE. Gore will keep plugging along and put up another top 10 finish. He was a top 5 last year but if the passing game gets better his numbers might drop a tad. We definitely should grab the best OT available with one pick and a top rated defensive back. I know we'll go OL with a pick and if CJ Spiller falls to the Niners at pick 17 I'd jump all over that pick. I know we need help with passing defense but if we can add another weapon ,like Spiller, on offense to help Smith I say it'd be a real bonus for the 49ers. It would help prolong Gore's career. I know we have Coffee but if we could get the top rated RB in the draft I'd go for it. He'd be good insurance for Gore should he miss any significant time .

We should probably start a new offseason thread for this year. Any takers? I'll fire one up if no one else jumps.
