Assuming there are no keeper implications (salary cap, limited duration to keep a player, etc) then this is an easy accept.
It is a salary cap league but my cap only went up a net $7 million after the trade ($206 million cap). Can keep players as long as you want, though they may hold out if they are underpaid.

If anyone is interested, here are the salaries of the players/picks involved. There is a chance Lamb could hold out after 2025 but I have some expiring contracts so will have the room.

Lamb $11.75M
Spears $3.25M
2026 3rd $1.25M

1.05 $2.75M
1.16 $2.5M
Wilson $2.5M
Shaheed $1.75M

who decides this? Is this some sort of auto AI deciding he is underpaid or ?????? This is intriguing to me
When a player finishes top 5 at his position, he will hold out if his salary is not at least in the top 5 average at the position. AI sounds way cooler 😂

There are some exceptions. Players on their rookie contract will not hold out. Players will hold out a max of once every 3 years.

When a player holds out, you can pay their new salary demand, trade them ( and the new team pays their new salary demand), or cut them and they go into the yearly FA auction.

The new salary demand is the average of the top 5 salaries at that position or double the player’s salary, whichever is less.

So we have something similar in our salary cap/contract league. Any player that finishes in the top 15 of their position is subject to salary escalation if they aren't currently under contract. The team that has their rights can resign them to a one year contract at that escalated salary (there is a variable escalation depending on where they finish. Top 5 will be average of the top 5 highest salaries or a percentage of their current salary, whichever is higher). 6-10 go up $10 and 11-15 go up $5 (out of a $250 cap). This happens for all positions every year.

Very similar situation to your league. I really like how this works in action as players that actually perform increase salary instead of having some standard raise based on years where you can be crap but still have a salary increase.

We have one added wrinkle that if you don't extend the guy (any guy really) then he becomes your restricted free agent (RFA). You own matching rights to that player in the auction. Before our rookie/FA draft we have an RFA auction where any team with salary cap space can bid on RFA players in a true auction. Once there is a winning bid the team that owns that players rights can decide to match the bid and keep the player (if they have enough cap space to do so). Any player won/matched in the auction is now eligible for a 3 yr contract that prevents his salary from escalating. It works really well and is a lot of fun for draft day. Any RFA player not auctioned off falls to the rookie/FA draft that immediately follows the auction.

I never thought about going a step further and having players "hold out" even if under contract. It's an interesting wrinkle I will have to think about.

I really like the RFA aspect and have been pushing for that in my leagues. We are able to franchise one player per year that has an expired contract.

We can franchise one player (at the escalated salary) at a time for up to a 3 yr extension. But once you use the FT you cannot assign another one until the original one expires.

Our franchise tag is only 1 year and then the player becomes an UFA.
