Noob draft is over - Not terrible... but pitching is bad. (1 Viewer)

Just finished my draft and my office I think is decent, at the least. Took a chance with Pujols in the 2nd round, as in my inaugural season is going to need some luck and things to go right to be even close to contending.

That said, my pitching in an 11 league, basic 5x5 roto is pretty weak. So, what now? Trade, waiver wire, pray?

We have only two bench slots (start 9 P) so there will likely be guys on the WW that are at least as good as the last couple/few rounds drafted.

My pitching "staff":

SP Smoltz

SP Rich Hill

SP Wang

SP Grienke

SP Maddox

MR Broxton

CL Marmol

CL Matt Capps

CL F Cordero

CL Jonathan Broxton

Bench: Micah Owings

Offense:

c McCann

1b Pujols

2b Howie Kendrick

ss Rollins

3b Aramiz Ramirez

mi JJ Hardy

ci Alex Gordon

of Manny Ramirez

of Hunter Pence

of Corey Hart

of Willie Taveras

of Rick Ankiel

ut Carlos Delgado

Bench: Lastings Millege

Guys on the WW:

Wandy Rodriguez

Tim Wakefield

Aaron Cook

Brian Bannister

Jeff Suppan

Miguel Batista

Paul Byrd

Tom Glavine

Carlos Silva

Jake Westbrook

FWIW, the beer offer is real for those in NY.

took a chance on pujols in the 2nd round? man, he was a steal. your team is real nice. pitching probably wont be a problem. smoltz is a stud. he was better than people think last year.

also, you dont have a real closer. any way to remedy that? broxton is a nice pick. but no saves for him.

I don't know why you're so down on your pitching staff, your whole team's pretty damn good actually. You're not going to win K's but W's and solid ratios will come. I wouldn't worry about the closer role, Marmol and Broxton offer plus K rates, solid ratios, and will get some garbage W's and SV's sprinkled in.

I would drop Micah Owings who only really helps a team like this if his offense can be included too and add a setup guy who has a strong likelihood of closing at some point. Guys like Joquin Benoit and Jeremy Accardo immediately come to mind. Other openings will arise and if they do you can swap out the setup guy for him when thathappens. At the very least a quality setup guy will offer good K rates and ratios while you're searching for closer help.

Thanks for the input all. Perhaps my staff is not as bad as I thought, but I know Wang wont get K's and I have a couple pitchers north of 40 years old. Hasnt Hill sucked in Spring Training as well?

I have to admit, TU helped me tremendously with a couple cheat sheets.

For now, I will shift my focus from looking for a starter to finding someone that may be able to get me some saves.

Pick up Wandy and just start him when he is at home. He's lights out there posting a 2.94 ERA and a 6-3 record.

Your team doesn't look terrible. I don't like Wandy, although what the other poster said is true. Ervin Santana had a similar situation, but then blew up last year. Pitchers who suck on the road end up sucking at home as well, IMO.

Look deeper on the WW. A couple of gems in the rough I like are Jair Jurrjens from ATL and Johnny Cueto from CIN. Let us know who else is on the wire. From the guys you listed, Byrd and Glavine may help with W, but I don't like chasing Ws (hard to predict). They do play for good clubs though and won't destroy your ERA or WHIP. Aaron Cook is okay, and Bannister had a good year, I just don't trust them personally. The other guys will punish you if you put them in there. Wake is very erratic, and now his personal catcher was released, so no telling how he'll respond.

You have Broxton listed twice. I'd hold onto him for awhile, he'll help your ERA and WHIP numbers even if he's not closing. If Saito goes down (and he has a bum leg right now) Broxton equals :goodposting: Don't worry about spring training and Hill, I like his upside. 2nd round for Pujols is a great steal BTW.

Good luck

Ok, week one is done, and Im not looking too bad early one though Smoltz already is dinged perhaps. That said, I need K's and S's. Some waiver wire options for Ks, since I dont see any good save options:

Keep / Drop Micah Owings (looking like I will keep and start him this coming week). Assuming he is kept, I have to drop Willie Taveras, but there seem to be a few OFs always on the wire (only TWO man bench in this league) - righ tnow there is Church amongst others that are at least serviceable with some upside.

On the wire:

Kevin Millwood

Carlos Silva

Tim Redding

Manny Parra

Nick Blackburn

Any thoughts?

Parra is not a bad choice as he will get his share of K's and shouldn't kill you in ERA or WHIP. I actually like both Brewers Parra and Villanueve. Not sure if Parra gets left out when Yovani comes back, but by then Sheets could be on the DL like usual.

Thanks for the advice - I actually switched gears and picked up T. Pena after realizing that he was available. With only F. Cordero and M Capps as actual closers, I now will start one of the following three with the other two as my bench players, hoping that one soon takes over closing duties:

Broxton

T Pena

Marmol

If one of those three can get the closers gig in the next few weeks, I will be a lot better in saves and Im not sure one of the pitchers still available is really much better than any other.

What's your league's IP limit?

1000 IP Minimum, no Max. I figure that those three relievers, while not getting any saves, could get a few wins each and should help WHIP/ERA some, but this week I have two on the bench with an extra starter in there hoping to capitalize on the relievers when/if one or more become closers.
