NorCal vacation tips (1 Viewer)

There's no room there for new construction and residents voted for waterfront height restrictions a few years ago.  The existing properties get rebranded now and again.

If you want a 21st century building, Union Square is the only place you'll find them.
What about by pac bell? What are they calling that neighborhood again...South Beach? South Park? Southies?

South Beach  Plenty of development in that neck of the woods but mostly condos and rentals.  I guess that's a more profitable business these days than hotels.

It's kind of a weird neighborhood.  It has a generic vibe; unless you're looking at the Bay Bridge or Muni, it doesn't really seem like you're in San Francisco.

I'm kinda shocked nobody said anything about Lombard street  So anyway the kids might enjoy California Academy of Science  Lots of good theatre/Entertainment to be found but ya may want to avoid O'Farrell   :excited:   Pier 39 is quite possibly a must see  Chinatown maybe Union Square if you wanna shop  AFAIK there is still a Movie drive-in in Concord CA (Kidz Bop concert at the Concord Pavilion July 14th)  Manchester United plays at Levi's on July 26th  May want to consider Bart for fun if not some travel plans

On BART right now  I have a seat but somebody’s ### is three inches from my face. Can confirm this isn’t fun.

Excellent aquarium for all ages and restaurants at Cannery Row in Monteray near Pebble Beach. Its a little south of SF but would be a nice day on the coast. Santa Cruz Boardwalk has amusement park for the kids. Could make a full day out of the aquarium and amusement park.

Thanks.  Do you know any advantages between Pier 2620 v. Sheraton Fisherman's Wharf?  Those two seem to be decent.  Do you know of any other decent ones closer to the ocean?

The 2620 used to be a Hilton for a long time.  It probably was renovated more recently when it changed ownership.  Location of either is fine if you're set on staying at the Wharf.  I haven't stayed at either but there should be a lot of reviews online.

Fisherman's Wharf is on San Francisco Bay.  The ocean starts when you get past the Golden Gate, around 4 miles West of your hotels.

just a thought depending upon your desire to stay in the city.... but how about looking into lodging in tiburon or sausalito and taking the ferry in to sight-see?  gives you your views and puts you closer to the headlands, stinson, and muir.  also more tranquil. can ditch the car/parking and uber around the city.

Counter argument.  If you're coming to see SF, wake up in SF.

Not that massive at the Wharf
I'll take your word for it. Have lived here for 30 years and been to the Wharf once!

But if you go shopping at Union Square, take BART anywhere, ride the Powell St. cable car from end-to-end, go to the Mission for dinner, sightsee on Haight Street or check out Golden Gate Park, the homeless issue is impossible not to notice. It was bad in the 1990s when I worked in the City and it's considerably worse now. Same in the East Bay, or at least Oakland and Berkeley.

fwiw... the ocean isn't a tourist area- residential and cold/foggy... unless you're talking about the bay where fisherman's wharf, etc. are located?

Before we had kids and a car, Mrs. Eephus and I took a couple of staycations to the Ocean Park Motel on 46th Avenue off of Sloat.  We loved it because it felt like we were leaving the city and going to some cold, foggy beach town.  It was a great place to have sex but would be too far away from tourist attractions (except for the zoo) to be a good base for a family vacation.

Thanks.  I'm originally from the bay area and still live really close to the ocean.  It's always cool having a room with a view moreso than needing to visit the beach/ocean.

I haven't been to San Francisco in some time so I didn't know if there has been any development around Pier 39.  That's really going to be the focal point for the first day.

The new stuff around there would be the Exploratorium and Musee Mechanique.   They've both been mentioned upthread and are great--better than anything on Pier 39.  The Maritime museum was renovated recently but I haven't been there.  I think the Wax Museum has changed hands but that's too cheesy even for me.

Aside from the sea lions, what exactly is at pier 39 to see? I used to go as a kid because it was the best video game arcade around... But other than that, all I remember were schlocky t-shirt shops etc. Caveat...40ish years ago.

My 13 year old daughter and I did one of these Urban Adventurequests in SF last summer, basically a mobile app scavenger hunt.  We had a blast and saw a few things in The City I've never seen (or noticed) despite living in the Bay Area for 20 years.  And we walked a ton.  We did the longer one and it took us a good 5 hours (we weren't in a hurry, spent time at a few of the locations like the cable car museum), but there's a shorter one focused around the Embarcadero area as well.

lol the sea lions seem to be the priority for the trip.

The Inn Above Tide looks nice.  Muir is also on the to do list so that is actually a possibility.

The old arcade at the foot of Pier 39 was pretty great.  It had the big cabinet machines that you didn't see at the sketchier neighborhood arcades in the City.  Even the world's smallest bumper cars track was fun.  I may have visited there while tripping on acid circa 1983.  Thank goodness that everybody wasn't carrying a camera 7/24 in those days.

The arcade at the far end of the pier now appears to be something called Players Sports Grill & Arcade.  I'll take my hallucinations somewhere else, thank you.
