Who is on the horizon and what impact could they have?

I'm starting this with an eye toward Dominic Brown. He's on the wire in my league with short rosters but I'm thinking about grabbing him as he's off and running in AAA after a rehab. Ben Francisco is junk, when does he get the call Philly homers?

We already have Hosmer up, and i see Igelisias is up at SS in Boston. Is he a top guy, is he sticking around for a while?

Who else is on deck?

Maybe stating the obvious, but Anthony Rizzo is probably next; he's been tearing it up and it's not like SD has much else at 1B. Desmond Jennings probably up after June 1st.

I posted the list below yesterday at www.mastersball.com

Iglesias is up short term AND he is better real life baseball player than a fantasy player - a GREAT defensive shortstop but not great fantasy category contributions

Brown (who really has been up before so a different species) is certainly on the short list

I don't think Rizzo is up as early as people want.....and Hawpe has started to hit a little

anyway - here is my current list

The Hosmer Effect

Captain's Log

Written by Perry Van Hook

A week ago it was the “Hosmer Watch”: Fantasy players and Royals fans everywhere wondering how long before Kansas City would choke on Kila Ka'aihue’s lack of production while top prospect Eric Hosmer was hitting over .400 at AAA. Then the Royals management surprised everyone by actually making the move, demoting Ka’aihue to Omaha to see if he can find his stroke and installing Hosmer at first base, likely for the next ten-plus years.

Almost immediately the question on our message boards and in fantasy baseball conversations became: Who will be the next top prospect to be called to stay in a major league lineup?

Of course this is really asking for guesswork, but at least to a very slight degree, I think it can be educated prognostications. Certainly we can’t pretend to know what will happen injury wise to any major or minor leaguers and that could be a deciding factor. But we do know who the top prospects are and how they are doing at AA or more likely AAA, and we can see glaring holes in major league lineups.

The other thing working in favor of making such a list in May is that we are less than a month from the floating date for “Super Twos” which would cost the MLB team an extra year of service and more money.

If you follow Jason Grey’s blog on minor leaguers at ESPN, he updates a list of the top ten or so minor leaguers ready for a callup. And if you follow the exploits of the two major fantasy leagues for fantasy baseball writers and analysts – TOUT and LABR – you can see which minor leaguers have been added recently as well as those rostered in their auction drafts in March. Hosmer in fact was owned in both those AL competitions, as I bought him in the LABR auction (rather than hoping for him as a reserve pick), and Ron Shandler added him in an early FAAB bid for $1.

So who is next? (note – I am excluding players who have already played at the major league level like Brandon Belt (who would be first on this list) or Mike Minor, Ben Revere a speedy Twins outfielder recently called up, and Boston’s shortstop of the future, Jose Iglesias, who was called up Sunday when Marco Scutaro went on the DL)

Dustin Ackley, 2B, Seattle Mariners – I thought all along that Ackley (teammate of the Indian’s Alex White at UNC) would be the first minor leaguer brought up in late May/early June and even though he is struggling at AAA, the Mariners have nothing blocking him on the major league team and should reward their loyal fan base with a look at the future

Danny Duffy, SP, Kansas City Royals – I thought before the season that this would be organizational mate Mike Montgomery, but Duffy has pitched extremely well this year and seems to have the edge. Certainly the Royals could use some help in their rotation (although in fairness you have to admit it has been much better than was thought before the season started). In fact in AL TOUT a week ago there was a very humorous mini bidding war on Duffy. Matthew Berry with several disabled pitchers, looking for a prayer, decided that rather than just bid the minimum $1 on a minor league pitcher; he would bid $2 for Duffy and be very smart. Unfortunately Grey bid $4 and rostered Duffy.

Domonic Brown, OF, Philadelphia Phillies – Brown might have been higher on the list given how well he is hitting since joining AAA after his rehab, but Ben Francisco is still playing very well for the Phillies and Raul Ibanez has suddenly started hitting very well. Still I expect Brown up very soon

Andrew Oliver, SP, Detroit Tigers – While the entire Tigers team has been a major disappointment for its fans, the starting pitching has been the main culprit and surely the Phil Coke experiment is ready for the drain. Oliver has been pitching very well at AAA while awaiting the call

Anthony Rizzo, 1B, San Diego Padres – Rizzo, part of the return in the Adrian Gonzalez trade with the Red Sox has been flirting with .400 at AAA and has better than a home run per week. Brad Hawpe recently had a couple of good days but is still hitting under .200 and is not as good a defensive first baseman as Rizzo

Brett Lawrie, 3B, Toronto Blue Jays – Lawrie has been hammering the ball at AAA Las Vegas (admittedly a great hitting park) and EE is not the answer for Toronto

Mike Moustakas, 3B, Kansas City Royals – “Moose Tacos” would have been my co-favorite for the first major promotion of the year with Ackley if you asked me in March, but Hosmer got the call on positional need and really the combo of Mike Aviles and Wilson Betemit has been better than projected for the Royals. Still I can’t see any reason Moustakas is not in KC by the middle of the season

Lonnie Chisenhall, 3B, Cleveland Indians – Chisenhall and that sweet left handed line drive stroke should have been IMO the starting third baseman for the Indians out of spring training where he was terrific. Even financial concerns for a poor franchise should not have put Jack Hannahan in Chisenhall’s way but again nobody thought Hannahan would be this productive

Desmond Jennings, OF, Tampa Bay Rays – Surely higher on most lists in March, I have to believe that the Rays don’t want to bring Jennings up until they are sure he will play every day and Sam Fuld even with the current slump at the plate (the defense is still outstanding), has been a revelation and the solid pitching and hitting surprisingly has the Rays tied for first in the AL Beast with the Yankees

Jesus Montero, C, New York Yankees – While Montero is certainly a top AL minor leaguer, I never thought he would be an early callup, but Jorge Posada has been as disappointing as Russell Martin has been surprisingly good. Either the Yankees will need the bat or they will need to trade for pitching, and Montero would be great in either role.

Depending on how TB wants to set themselves up financially, we might see Desmond Jennings up by the end of the week.

Otherwise, he'll push out to June / July

Hooks list is solid. Jason Kipnis, 2B, Indians is also a possibility. He is the best hitting option there for the Indians if they want to replace Orlando Cabrera.

Jays have called up Eric Thames. 27 HR's in AA last season and hitting .342/.419/.610 so far this season in AAA Vegas (where all numbers are inflated but still impressive). Lind on DL retroactively but if Thames can hit, maybe they'll keep him up in place of Rivera who has been a disaster at the plate.

Just a guess but I think we might see Montero soon on the Yanks. This climate is kind of similar to when Cano and Wang first got called up, and then Melky after that, the dreaded call for "energy" in the lineup. If they lost tomorrow, I bet you see him by Baltimore.

I can definitely see this. Not to mention, Montero is probably going to need to come up and hit if the Yanks want to make him a centerpiece for King Felix in July.

just grabbed lawrie (already had moustakas and teheran)nice list
I'm holding those very same lottery tickets. Mouse is really heating up and it sounds like Lawrie's getting more comfortable at third. I'm hoping they both get called up in June. I need a 3B of the future.Picked up Duffy today too. Love Teheran, but I'm more excited about Duffy for this year. Teheran will need another injury or trade to stick. Duffy should be up for good if he pitches well.

3B is such a bad position this year. I'm currently starting Reynolds (picked up Callaspo last week) and he's killing me. If Lawrie is just average, I'll be happy.

Do you expect any of these guys to contribute to fantasy rosters? I missed out on Hosmer :bag:
Moustakas is probably the best bet given the mess that is 3B this year in fantasy.Montero would be interesting just because he'd be hitting in the Yankees monster lineup and little league park.

Jason Grey's new list published at ESPN this afternoon

Top guys he expects to start being called up in June - Jennings, Lawrie, Moustakas, T. Robinson, Ackley

Lawrie's likely coming up Friday.
He got hit on the wrist in Vegas tonight in the first inning and left the game, hopefully no injury. That would really suck.
X-rays determined Lawrie suffered only a bruised, paving the way for the much hyped Langley, B.C., native to join the Blue Jays on their upcoming road trip to Baltimore and Kansas City. Several media outlets reported on Tuesday that Lawrie that was expected to be promoted later this week.Read more: http://www.cbc.ca/sports/baseball/story/2011/06/01/sp-lawrie-injury.html#ixzz1O26nb2oc

With the lack of quality 3rd baseman, and especially due to my 3rd base situation 9Chris Johnson), I picked up Lawrie 3 weeks ago. I don't think he will hit for average right away, but he should be a good source of power and steals.

Dodgers call up Dee Gordon from Triple-A
from cbs.sportsline on GordonThe Dodgers recalled SS prospect Dee Gordon prior to Monday's series opener against the Phillies in Philadelphia. Juan Castro was designated for assignment to make room on the roster. Gordon was not in the starting lineup posted for Monday's game, but manager Don Mattingly labeled him the team's regular shortstop going forward, reports the Los Angeles Times. (Updated 06/06/2011). Fantasy AnalysisGordon, who has earned the nickname "Mr. Excitement" for his play in the minors, was hitting. 315 with 22 steals in 25 tries for the Triple-A Isotopes. Rafael Furcal is on the disabled list for at least another couple of weeks and it sounds like Gordon will get just about everyday playing time moving forward. Otherwise, the Dodgers would have been better served to keep their young prospect in the minors. He doesn't offer any power, but think of him as a great source for steals in Rotisserie formats if he is not overmatched by major league pitching and is able to get on base at anywhere near the same rate he has been in the minors (.361 OBP).

11 Errors in 50 minor league games this year. Lifetime FLD% of .937. Mr. Excitement indeed.

3-4 so far tonight with a SB, but I don't know if it is exciting.

Tom Milone, SP, Washington. Triple-A. He has a 68-4 k/bb ratio. Would think he could be called up at anytime.
I would not hold your breath on Milone. He's not on the 40 man roster, so not as easy to bring him up as some others. And I think the Nats would like to see him go a full year in AAA (maybe he comes up in September once rosters expand).Gorzelanny will reclaim the 5th starter spot once he returns. Right now, Maya is the 5th starter in his place, but, if they give up on Maya, I think Stammen would take that spot before Milone. If Milone comes up, I think it's only after the Nats have traded away Marquis or another starter, or if another starter goes down with an injury.

Conor Gillaspie up to play 3B for the Giants until Sandoval comes back. He's a former 1st rounder out of Wichita State who hasn't showed any power in the minors. He's probably better than the shipwreck of the SS. Tejada at this point, but not worth a pickup in anything but the deepest league.

I'm surprised to see Rockies OF call-up Charlie Blackmon is Caucasian. Sickels has always been high on him as a prospect. Who knows what could happen if he gets regular playing time.

Really? 2011 book rates him C+ and profiles him as a fourth outfielder......

Excellent tools, hit well in Cal League but still raw for a college guy. Terrific glove in center.
I like him a lot and expect he can be a good fourth outfielder with some chance to get beyond that.
Scouts have often seen Blackmon as a good fit as a fourth outfielder, given his speed and ability to play all three outfield positions, but he's developed enough with the bat that he could be a regular. Although I don't think he'll be a star, he should be a productive major leaguer, hitting for average and moderate power, picking up some stolen bases, and holding a roster spot for years to come.
Up until today I thought Blackmon was African-American so I'm no authority. But there are guys who aren't on the top 100 prospects lists who manage to put up decent MLB performances. Chances are that he won't but he seems worth keeping an eye on in case he starts getting regular ABs.

Lawrie will be out at least 2-3 weeks......so with him on the DL (and in the minors) many can reserve him and wait - if you can't then I doubt you can take three weeks of zeroes and should drop him

Can we get a 3rd baseman please? Its a wasteland out there.Chisenhall? Moustakas?
Lawrie up in a couple weeks - as soon as he is off the DL and has his timing back at AAAAbsent injury don't see Chisenhall or Moose Tacos up until the All Star break........Scott Sizemore was recalled this week and will share 3B with Adam Rosales for Oakland - both likely free agents and Rosales has more pop

Moustakas just called up. Pick him up ASAP if available. Has star potential so worth a gamble on dropping a backup player in hopes of catching lightning in a bottle.
