Oasis of the Seas.....cruise. (1 Viewer)

Sailed last year on Oasis. Have been on many cruises. I liked this ship a lot. Try out some of the specialty restaurants, they're great. They have some package plans you can get,we got one that gave us 3 of the restaurants for the price of 2. Lots to do,don't be afraid to explore the ship,it's huge. Bon Voyage.

Cool, thanks.

I've been reading the cruise critic boards trying to get as much information as possible about the ship.

Not to totally hijack here, but I'm going on my first cruise in ten days. What's the easiest way to get alcohol on board if I'd prefer not to pay $50 bucks a day for a wristband?

Have you found this thread: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2017432&highlight=oasis over there? If not, its the best photo recap I've seen in the 6+ years I've been on that board. If you haven't already, be sure to sign up for their Crown & Anchor Society bonus program while on board. Additionally, my wife and I are just back from another RCCL cruise and we tried the Premium Drink package. If you are thinking about this, DO IT. We found it to be totally worth it and came out WAY ahead. Haven't been on Oasis, but have sailed on RCCL several times. Let me know if you have any other general RCCL questions.

Rum Runners. You can find them on Amazon. I keep empty M&M big zip lock bags and tuck them in there for further concealment. Skipped them our last cruise for the $55 per/person all you can drink. Surprisingly, I only over did on one of the 7 days, with a nice comfortable buzz the other 6.

I've never done this because I just buy drinks onboard, but I've seen some cruise lines allow people on with "water". Buy a big package of Poland Spring, fill up a bunch of bottles with vodka, put the caps back on, and make sure all of the bottles that are around the perimeter are still actual water. Throw like 5-6 in the middle, preferably underneath a logo or something.

Just don't accidentally give your kids the wrong bottle of water...

just put 2 bottles of vodka in our luggage rolled up in clothes. Carried on 2 bottles of wine.

Anyone have any insights on excursions? Best way to book them...do many sell out, etc? Looking specifically at Nassau.

I would never do a cruise excursion. You spend a ton of money and you are 100% on their timetable. Meet in the lobby at this time, board a bus, meet back at the bus at this time, etc, etc. This is the part of cruising where people feel most like they're being herded on and off like cattle. When you get off the ship in Nassau, just go find a cab or one of the little boats for a more scenic tour over to Paradise Island. Make sure you leave a little extra time when you come back, no biggie. You'll spend a fraction of the price and you'll give yourself literally hours more time to do whatever you wanna do.

I understand that, but the kids really want to swim with the dolphins. Kind of a once in a lifetime chance.....or at least limited opportunities.

Most trained dolphin stuff is really inhumane. They're intelligent animals and they'd much rather be out in the ocean with their families. Go snorkeling instead.

Just came back from a 10-day Carribbean cruise with my wife. Everything was top notch from the food to the staff, cleanliness of the ship, stuff to do onboard, etc. I'd still much rather pick a place like St. Kitts or Jamaica and stay put for a week at an all-inclusive or a nice private rental. Just my :2cents:

Nice pics. The ship looked decent as well.

I've been on her sister ship, Allure.  It's ridiculously huge. My tips :

If you want to watch football, either get to the On Air bar well ahead of game time or go up to the Aqua Theater and watch on the jumbo screens there (Sunday afternoon games.)

The specialty restaurants are worth the upcharge if you like good food.  All of them.  Dining room was highly mediocre.

Lots of alternative dining venues around the ship.  I never saw anyone paying the nominal charge for the mexican cantina.  Hot dogs on the Boardwalk seemed to be pretty popular, as did the Park Cafe (sandwiches/salads.)  Johnny Rockets serves breakfast which is a cut above the buffet fare (although the MDR is better.)

Do the Flowrider.  Don't be a #####.

Zip line is fun but if there's a line, it's a pretty good amount of time waiting/suiting up for what amounts to a 5 second ride.

If you're a drinker, get the package and forget smuggling.  Smuggling is a pain in prep, execution, and even after you've pulled it off, you have to go back and forth to your room to make cocktails.  Skip it and pay for the package or buy your drinks a la carte.

The Windjammer is almost always packed and very hard to find a table.  Avoid if you can, the wait time screens on your in cabin TV and around the ship will tell you which venues aren't as crowded.

If you have any specific questions or want recos on your island stops, let me know.

Agreed.  Book everything yourself.

I did the dolphin swim in Cozumel a few years ago and the place had an exclusive agreement with the cruise line.  If you were coming on a ship, you had to book through the line in stead of directly.  So, I just lied and said I was a hotel guest.  They eyed me suspiciously when I got there but luckily I had memorized the name of one of the nearby hotels on the way over and buried our RCCL towels in my wife's beach bag.  Saved $40pp off the cruise line excursion price, got more options of which swim we wanted to do, AND got a free lunch for 2 that the cruise line excursion didn't offer.  All from lying !!!!

Minor detail, but we wont be on the Oasis, it was just one of the few "Cruise" threads here. We'll be on a Carnival ship.

In any case, it seems I'd prefer to go to the Blue Lagoon and that doesn't appear to be offered from my ship so Id be directly booking anyways.

That excursion advice is universal.  The cruise lines will try to scare you with tales of people missing the ship and that the only way to guarantee that you'll be back in time for departure is to book through them.  They neglect to mention that all you have to do is not be a numbnuts and you can accomplish the same on your own.

I'm not going to get into treatment as I believe they are treated very well. They are very intelligent. The particular dolphin we swam with was rescued after Katrina. Well, techinically her pregnant mother was and she was born in captivity. I believe they said 10 of the 16 dolphins they had came from Katrina.

Great time for the kids....price was of course on the high end not to mention the photos.

I've been on maybe 5 or 6 cruises and have smuggled pretty much each time.  If you are going with a big group, just get a couple wrist bands and then the people with the wrist bands ca get everyone else a drink - one of my buddies recommended this approach and it worked for his group, don't have first hand experience however.

One time we bought a case of water and as you know they are completely hermetically sealed with the shrink-wrap.  To prepare for the trip, I flipped it over and used an exacto knife to cut the bottom of the shrink-wrap.  I filled three of the bottles with vodka and marked them so the kinds wouldn't be guzzling vodka accidentally.  I put everything back in the shrink-wrap and sealed it again with clear mailing tape... worked perfectly.

On another occasion, my wife found something online or where ever that looked like a packet of condoms except they were filled with vodka - we called them vodka condoms before the cruise.  The idea was that these wouldn't look suspicious to x-rays or whatever.  I packed these vodka-condoms in a bag we checked a the curb.  When we boarded the ship, my wife went with one of her sisters or something and me and the kids headed to the room to check out the balcony or whatever.  While we were there, they delivered our checked bags so the first thing I looked for was the smuggled vodka-condoms.  I opened the suitcase that I know contained the booty and when I found the prized possession I grabbed one end and pulled it out - unraveling as I pulled.  One of my kids say "DAD! What are you going to do!!!! We are going to be in the room!!!!!!!"   So I had to explain they weren't real condoms, they were just filled with vodka because I'm too cheap to buy the drinks on the ship :bag:

Sailed NCL Getaway twice last year out of Miami to BVI's and Bahamas.  We get the ultimate bev package (all drinks $15 or less included) and smuggle two smart water bottles full of vodka. I like to have a pop or two in the room without having to go out for it and just have the butler bring oj and lemons to stock for the week. We averaged about 10 drinks each per day on board which really isn't all that much when you factor in morning screws, poolside beers all afternoon, maybe a frozen muddy or two, wine by the glass with dinner and then cognacs and irish coffees after dinner.

Obviously every line is different, but they didn't allow any bottles on the Carnival ship. 12 cans of soda per person were allowed.
