Odd stack 3-3-5 (1 Viewer)

....the nickel defense. The 5th DB in the 3-3-5 is the extra player in the defensive backfield.

In EFSports, you can even use a 3-2-6 allignment - the dime package.

Hope this helps!

I mean as a regular, base defense. I am familiar with it as it is used a bit in the Mountain West Conference. However, I'd never heard it with the "odd stack" in front of it. I'm guessing that's just redundant.I ask because the little leagues in the area we moved into all use it cuz it's the high school defense.

Stack usually refers to the fact that the LBs don't play over the gaps but line-up directly behind a defensive linemen.

As for odd, I know that teams used to say they are in an odd front ( 3 or 5 man) or even (normally 4 man), but given that meaning 3-3-5 odd would be a bit redundant.

The 3-3-5 defense has made a big resurgance in high school ball. The whole premise is based on being able to blitz from anywhere on the field. Some people will align the same defense as a 3-5-3, with the SS's walked up to LB depth. It is easy to overload and stunt with this defense. It also can be suprisingly effective vs. the run if the DT's and ILB's play downhill and maintian thier gap assignment.

A couple of good ways to attack the defense:

1) Use big line splits. This moves the DT's away from the point of attack and puts a lot of pressure on the LB's.

2) The inside zone, and to a lesser extent, the outside zone are solid.

3) Inside Veer

4) 3 Step passing game with the slots reading the LB's hot. Devastating if the QB will get rid of the ball quickly.

5) Bubble Screen

Thanks! My kids are in little league and all teams have to run the high school offense and defense. We are in Utah and what's interesting is that the Utah Utes ran the shotgun spread, and that's what the high school is running. Meanwhile, BYU ran the 3-3-5, which is what they are running on defense (BYU scrapped that defense this year). Smacks of a follow-the-leader mentality.
