This is a spin-off from another thread, and I'm genuinely curious what conclusions folks will come to here.

Two NFL teams are playing each other late in the season. The scoreboard was damaged by an errant punt in the 1st quarter, and while one team knows that they are winning, they do not know by how much.

At the onset of the 4th quarter, the referee offers the winning team the option to learn the actual score, with the condition that the trailing team also be allowed to learn the score.

If you were the leading team, what would give you the best chance at victory?

A) Ensure both teams learn the score

B) Ensure that both teams remain ignorant of the score

If you were the trailing team and were given the same choice, what would give you the best chance at victory?

*Edited for clarity*

Hire a new coaching staff and players...apparently no one on my team can count by 3s, 6s or 1s and nobody came to the game with scratch paper.

Unpack this.
He's just making a joke about nobody being able to keep track of the score.

I'm happy to straighten something up, but I'm not sure what is unclear. You see the poll, right?

It's true that this stems from the 2pt conversion thread, but I'm not going after that at all. It's just that so many people disagreed on the value of what amounts to knowing the score, that I thought it would be an interesting exercise to take that question and have a closer look at it.

I mean, honestly, the voting is already showing that there is not much agreement on what knowing the score means to the trailing team and the leading team and who serves to benefit more from the knowledge.

I'm actually a bit disappointed that nobody seems to have any interest in the topic at all.

Probably lacking response because the hypothetical is a bit of a stretch.

But if I'm the leading team in a zero-knowledge game, I will play more or less my base offense, made slightly more conservative, and I'll almost certainly kick FGs in FG-land.

If I'm the trailing team, I will have to play more aggressively. I'll have to assume that time is a factor, so I'll run less, and if I'm in a marginal fourth-down situation, I'll go for it. (Say, fourth and four from the 15).

So I think that the trailing team has more to lose when the score isn't available; they have to make more significant changes to their game plan, and those could be the wrong changes if they're down by 3 vs. 7 vs. 11.

Good weed huh? Cuz this is not only odd, it's not really interesting at all.

Maybe a way to say it so that people don't get hung up on how 2 teams can not know the score, is to say that one team gets bonus points to put them into the lead to start the 4th Q, say a lead of 1 to 10 points, but they don't know how many until the end of the game... how then does that change both teams strategy.

If I'm the team with the bonus points, my decision on whether I'd prefer both teams to know the true score or not is based on how dangerous I think the other team is on offense coupled with how good my D is playing and handling them so far in the game. And how good my O is at grinding the clock down.

If the other team knows the score and that they are down by a significant amount, they will be going for 4th down conversions more aggressively - and against a team with a mobile QB like Vick, I'd be happier seeing them kick FGs than go for 1st downs in general.

In a nutshell, do I feel more confident as the team in the lead if the other team is playing conservatively or gambling.
