offensive line updates (1 Viewer)

I've had several people ask about updates to the offensive line grades. that will happen "quarterly" after every 4 weeks or so. SO the next official grade update with article will be between week 4 and week 5. The depth charts are kept up to date every week.

But in the meantime here are my in between notes after week 1, with brief explanations:

NFL fantasy Offensive line week 2:

possible upgrade BAL, HOU, NYJ, SF, KC.

[*]Baltimore shuffled their OL with Oher at LT, Harewood at LG, and Osemele at RT. The younger new look line was awesome, Osemele especially was burying people. McKennie is the swing tackle backup right now.

[*]Houston new right tackle Derek Newton played well.

[*]New York new right tackle Austin Howard shut out Mario Williams.

[*]San Fran offensive line bottled up a dangerous Packers. Iupati looking like Pro Bowler.

[*]Kansas City offensive line continues their momentum from preseason and looked good against Atlanta. Eric Winston a great addition.

possible downgrade PIT, STL, JAC, IND

[*]Pittsburgh have injuries to Gilbert and Foster. Both should play but overall the unit looks shaky.

[*]St. Louis best lineman center Scott Wells is out for the year. Wayne Hunter starting for Rodger Saffold. Watch out Sam Bradford.

[*]Jacksonville had 3 linemen leave last week's game in a walking boot (Eben Britton, Uche Nwaneri, Cam Bradfield) Nwaneri played through it. Eugene Monroe looked awesome against Jared Allen but they are banged up practically everywhere else.

[*]Indianapolis lost Winston Justice to a concussion (unclear if will play week 2) and Joe Reitz is still out. Trai Essex was signed as was Bradley Sowell. Clearly a scrambled up unit.

keeping eye on NE, TEN, PHI, DAL (possible lines of concern)

[*]New England QB Tom Brady took punishment in win over Tennessee. They lost Dan Connolly and Brian Waters never reported.

[*]Tennessee signed Duece Lutui this week and it appears right guard Leroy Harris is in trouble. The unit did not perform well against New England.

[*]Philadelphia have a problem at left tackle, where King Dunlap can be exploited. Vick was under constant duress against Cleveland.

[*]Dallas lost their center Phil Costa to a back injury but Erik Cook stepped in and played well against the Giants.

as always if anyone has any OL questions (or just want to tell me how bad I suck) feel free to contact me bitonti@footballguys.com or @draftdaddy on twitter

This the reason I like the Washington Defense this week.

Any thoughts on the Arizona OL? It looked like Seattle was getting good pressure but part of that may have been Skelton holding onto the ball too long (especially when you compare him to Kolb whom seemed to be making much quicker decisions and getting the ball out fast).

Derek Newton struggled against Miami in my opinion. He often looked sloppy trying to rebalance after initial contact in pass pro, whiffed on some blocks in the run game and I thought he made a couple poor choices on who to block at the second level at times. Schaub seemed to hurry some throws because Newton was giving up pressure.

JJ Watt ate Jonathan Martin up, although Martin looked solid at times against other players.

Cordy Glenn showed some power in the rungame, but had some lapses in pass pro that are typical of him movement wise. I think his problems are correctable and his strengths are promising for the future.

I agree that Austin Howard played well and will continue to do so. Mario Williams did not look like the same player that started last season, I don't know if it's because it was his first game back from injury and/or he's more violent on contact when he comes at an OT from a standing 3-4 OLB position as apposed to hand down 4-3 DE.

In your honest opinion OP, or anyone's for that matter, how much will the recent slew of injuries effect SJax's play? I hear people say his line was arguably worse in 2009-2010, in which case he still produced. I don't follow this type of stuff closely enough to be able to draw any concrete conclusions.

I'm also interested in ARI's line, as I wonder if there's any long-term upside with R.Williams.

The Carolina O-line was in the top of the ratings nearly everywhere I looked at the start of the season.

They looked like absolute #### against Tampa Bay week 1. The Panthers got only 10 yards rushing!

overall not bad. Certainly not as bad as it could have been. Cards OL were functional in the pass game and actually decent (with the potential to be very good) in the run game. Massie played well for a first time ever. This unit is more comfortable going forward in run block than setting back and accounting for all the blitzers. They are very inexperienced at the tackles but could be an upgrade candidate if they gel. this is an example of week 1 not being enough evidence, certainly New England will test their mettle this week.

This is a great bit of feedback, I agree he was confused and off balance at times... especially early in the contest. But for a guy with his experience level (very little) and his athleticism, that could end up being a very good Texans offensive line. He wasn't perfect but he wasn't terrible. But that's good enough probably. Arian Foster produced as the game went on. Newton is a player that bears watching and that complete picture might be an upgrade in the next grades. It might not, and that's why this is a message board thread not an article.

the injuries will effect Jackson in the sense that it will effect Bradford and that whole offense. Jackson has been running hard as the season opens and it's true he's never had much help in the past. I just think Bradford needs the help more and if they can't pass, that won't open up anything for Jackson. Rob Turner is a tough gritty guy in the run game but can be overwhelmed by bull rushes. Wayne Hunter was a disaster by the end of his Jets career but could (conceivably) turn it around in St. Louis. the fact that he's basically a right tackle doesn't bode well. But both players are better run blockers than pass blockers. So overall it's not good news for the Rams but Jackson will still probably get his numbers, even if he has to do it against 8 in the box. If/when he goes down, Pead becomes instant pickup. as for Ryan Williams i have him as my lotto ticket 5th RB in a couple of leagues. It's not just that the Cards are more comfortable run blocking, it's also their coaching staff's intention. Whoever is playing QB will have to rely on a steady dose of running, and eventually Wells could break down.

Just to reiterate what's noted above, Jags OL banged up

John Oehser ‏@JohnOehserHerb Taylor will start at guard for jaguars and guy whimper will start at tackle.
Whimper is a liability in pass protect but actually has looked decent run blocking. Journeyman guard Taylor was claimed off of waivers earlier this week.http://jacksonville.com/opinion/blog/544821/ryan-ohalloran/2012-09-16/jaguars-herb-taylor-start-lg

This is great analysis thanks for it but wanted to chime in as a Pats homer. The above is a bit of a drive by analysis. The line actually protected Brady well and allowed Ridley to average 6ypc. I'm sure espn ran the highlight over and over of Brady getting hit and bloodied when Solder wa beat by Wimbley (a great pass rusher) but that was one play. As BB days, the other guys get paid too. Overall the line played well much better than preseason. Would be great to have Waters back and Connelly injury hurts a little, but RG is the least important spot on the line so f you have a weak One it's better there than anywhere else.

Again not wanting to detract just wanted to provide a little more insight.

Anyone know if Dan Connolly NE OG is going to play? Listed as questionable but no word if he plays.
He's active.
I just saw that but just found out he isn't starting. Could be huge problems for the Patriots. Donald Thomas will start in his place. Here is the website.http://musketfire.com/2012/09/16/donald-thomas-could-start-over-dan-connolly/

Buffalo still hasn't given up a sack through 2 games and has the best running game in the league.

Still no respect from Bistonti. Maybe they'll get some grudging love in those quarterly updates when they keep this up.
