**OFFICIAL - 2007 Free Agent Listing** (1 Viewer)

I think we could be in for a quiet free agency season. With the cap going up, most teams will be able to retain their most important free agents. There will of course be some guys looking for bigger roles (i.e., Roman Oben, Damon Huard), some teams looking to cash in on good backups (i.e., Michael Turner, Matt Schaub) and some headcases their teams can't say goodbye to quickly enough (i.e., Jerry Porter, Jake Plummer), but the premier Tony Gonzalez/Adalius Thomas guys probably aren't going anywhere.

Just my opinion.

By putting the franchise tag on CB Nate Clements, the Bills have made sure to keep one of the most sought-after corners off the market. The fact that the franchise tag dropped almost $3 million from 2005 to ’06 made it possible for the Bills to use the tag on Clements. They lack depth at the CB position and are willing to let Clements play for the $5.893 million that is required by the franchise tag for ’06. This also buys the team more time to negotiate a long-term deal with Clements, who just turned 26 in December.

You have to remember though that even with the cap going up, some teams are going to have significantly more money to spend than others. The earliest figures that I saw showed some teams with close to $40M in cap room with others having less than $5M. And actually, both of the two guys that you listed, Gonzalez and Thomas, are on teams that early reports show having less than $7M under the cap. So there will be teams out there able to throw a LOT more money at these top players. It wouldn't surprise me at all to see virtually all of the top FAs move to other teams and get record deals for their positions.

Yeah, they franchised him last season but promised that they wouldn't this season. So the franchise tag and numbers don't really come into play this season for Clements. And I believe that the Bills actually ended up paying even more than that. (After quick Googling). Yup, they had to pay him $7.22M because the new CBA made an adjustment just for one year that basically affected just the Bills (and yes I'm still bitter about that).

The bottom line is that with the salary cap going up last year and another 5% this year, the top CB in free agency stands to take home an average of about $7M-$8M a year IMO.

ETA: I know what you're saying, but Clements and his agent aren't going to look at this year's franchise tag amount and just extrapolate it out over the life of the deal. They're going to take the total deals that the top CBs have as a starting point and then inflate for the new higher cap. So instead of just multiplying $6M or $7M for a franchise number times 6 years, they're going to start with Woodson's 7 year $52M, Bailey's 7 year $63M, and Antoine Winfield's 6 year $35M deals and start inflating from there.

In that one year the tag value(average of top 5 CB) dropped 3 mil. That was my point.top CB could get 11-12 mil maybe more. I believe the last top CB was 12.

I believe the issue is there is 3 or 4 CBs that make big big $ while the others are a significant drop and it throws the average way off.

I could see the Bills saying they changed their mind and tagging him. That he should take a top 5 salary and be happy.

Reality is that'll cost him 5 mil(12-7 above) but the average fan doesn't know that and he'd seem greedy to complain about a top salary

Interesting. Where have you found the salary cap projections you're referring to? I've looked, but I haven't found anything easily digestible.

LINKI'm sure that we'll start seeing some more accurate lists in about a month or so but this is what we have for now.

But again, those are just one year snapshots. If 4 of the top 5 CBs all have their most expensive year in the same year of their contract, then the franchise tag would be really high. You have to look at total contracts. There are no CBs in the league making anywhere NEAR $12M a year over the life of their contract. The top CBs in the league having contracts that average out to about $7M or $8M a year. My guess is that Clements will want a similar deal. He'll probably ask for something like a 7 year $60M contract (that's adjusted upwards for the new salary cap). That would be slightly more than what Champ Bailey is getting and apparently some people think that Bailey is the best CB in NFL history. And while I'd love to see Clements in Buffalo again, Levy promised not to tag him again. Levy is a man of his word and if Nate wants more money somewhere else he'll be free to take it. He has indicated that he would like to come back to Buffalo though and the only salary cap numbers I've seen so far show the Bills with among the most money to spend.

Another prize free agent this year is Patrick Kerney.

In the Denver Broncos 2007 offseason thread there's an article from the Denver post about how Denver hired Atlanta's Dline coach to be there DLine coach. Kerney was adamant about Atlanta keeping this coach on staff if he were to resign there. So the Broncos who are in need of DL help, could end up having the inside track on signing Kerney.

The Colts better win the Superbowl this year, because if they lose all that defensive talent this offseason I can't see them getting another shot soon.

Interesting. He'd be a pretty big loss for the Falcons

Old news but you can take Furrey off the list:

Furrey agrees to terms

ALLEN PARK, Mich. (Jan. 24, 2007) -- Mike Furrey will be back with the Detroit Lions next season.

The wide receiver agreed to terms on a three-year deal with the Lions.

Furrey, an unrestricted free agent, had 98 catches for 1,086 yards and six touchdowns for a team that won just three games last season.

Wanted to bump this back up again. I thouht I saw a blurb where David Boston signed a new contract with Tampa?

Not that much offensive talent out there this year, but a TON of defensive talent. IMO, especially with the Jets making the playoffs, they'd be absolutely crazy not to pony up for Michael Turner. I think he could truly be the heir apparent to Curtis Martin.
I'd be surprised if the Jets went after Turner. Yeah, they made they playoffs, but they still have a lot of other needs. CB, a true 3 - 4 NT, TE, OL. If they put out for Turner, I don't think they'll be able to address their most glaring need (CB). I'm sick of watching David Barrett giving up 3rd and longs all the time. They also need a true run-stuffing NT in that 3 - 4. After that, then I'd address the RB situation, probably via the draft. However, I wouldn't be upset if they went after T.J. Duckett.

What are the chances Ryan Lilja and Jake Scott move on from IND???

What is the comp for these players????

Running Back

Michael Turner, RFA, San Diego Chargers

Wide Receiver

Keenan McCardell, UFA, San Diego Chargers

Offensive Line

Kris Dielman, UFA, San Diego Chargers

Roman Oben, UFA, San Diego Chargers

Linebacker

Donnie Edwards, UFA, San Diego Chargers

Randall Godfrey, UFA, San Diego Chargers
Dielman is a must-sign and I'd like to get Oben signed in case McNeill's back flares up. Godfrey is likely going to retire but I'd bring Edwards back since he's still good in run support.

Dielman is a guy that the Browns are targeting I'm sure that Phil Savage has already made a few calls to his agent and is hoping they drag their feet on naming a head coach.
