*** OFFICIAL 2010 Cincy Bengals Season Thread *** (1 Viewer)

As promised here is the new repository for all thoughts Bengal for the 2010 offseason/season.

Lots of questions for our boys heading into this offseason, but also a lot of positive going on for once as there are definitely things to build off of.

Some of the big questions:

1) Will we totally implode if Zimmer leaves? Answer - very possibly. But I'd rather not contemplate us needing to hunt for a new DC. Here's hoping Mikey Boy makes one of those rare forays into his wallet and does the right thing. Given that he seems on track to end up a HC at some point in the not-too-distant future, Mikey should consider that he won't actually have to spend all that money anyway

2) The Carson situation. And now it truly is a situation. The Bengals are really in a tough spot here. Carson hasn't reached Delhommesian levels yet - but the uncomfortable question has to be asked. Is he physically alright or are injuries impacting his play? If so, is it something recoverable. If not - what the heck do we do? The fact that people are talking potential departure/trade/etc would seem sacrilege just a year or so ago. The problem is, looking around the league, there isn't really a guy out there who could step in and replace him (my quick look seemed to ID Kerry Collins as being one on the possibilities - and that really says it all). Starting over with a young QB - while it's worked for other teams of late - seems really difficult, especially with our draft position and frankly with the makeup of the locker room. Getting rid of Carson would seem to be a blow-it-up type move. And I don't know that we're there just yet. I don't know that drafting a project-type QB is necessarily the answer either - though I wouldn't mind seeing, say, a 2nd round QB if it means no more JT O'Sullivan.

3) Brother can you spare a WR? For a long time this was a team strength, but now it's really a shambles. Chad's slowing down a bit - though on balance he had a great year this year - he was giving up his body a lot more than he did in '08. Coles just wasn't worth the $. I'm not sure that franchising Housh would've been the best idea - that was truly a situation that I think could've hurt the locker room at a fragile time. It's easy to go back in the time machine but ultimately they should've franchised NOBODY. Btw, if Housh went back in the time machine, I bet he would've stayed now :loco: Anyhow - this is an area of the team that needs a serious revamp. Simpson is the bust to end all busts it seems (though Caldwell - picked in the same draft class - makes me feel a little better overall). Still - we need a serious burner and deep threat. I think that Henry's impact on the team on the field was much greater than we all realized - even if the numbers weren't very big last year before his injury. Without him we are dinks and dunks only.

Side note - when is the last time an NFL playoff team dressed only 4 WR for a game?!?

4) The o-line is ultimately a great story - but I hope they learn to improve their pass blocking this offseason. Edge rushes really started to kill us later in the year, but it's really hard to complain about this unit that came so far so fast. Looking at the guys we got rid of, perhaps we should've done all this sooner. Levi Jones wasn't signed until midway through the season and basically a speed bump for those seeking to kill Jason Campbell all year. Ghiaciuc was cut by the CHIEFS in training camp. Though I just read that the Chargers have apparently signed him as an injury replacement - though for their sake I hope he's inactive! It'll be interesting to see what Andre Smith does with a full offseason and training camp - I expect him to be much improved. Or at least maybe stop having like 9 false starts a game. I think this group needs time more than anything else right now.

5) The defense was the story of the year obviously. Safety help is the most crying need going into this offseason. I wouldn't mind seeing a depth LB drafted either as we seem to always get a million injuries there. It'd be great to see what this group could do over a whole year without any injuries. Those losses really added up over the course of the year.

6) Huber looks like the answer. I damn near bought a Huber jersey when I was out for the game but resisted the temptation - he is after all my called shot of last year's draft  Anyway, the main point of this point is Graham. Don't resign him. I really fear that Graham will suddenly be willing to give Mikey Boy a discount and that Mikey won't be able to resist. Hell even burn a 6th round pick on a kicker if you feel better going that way - but NO MORE GRAHAM.

That's all I got right now.

Have at it Who Dey Fans! It's a make-or-break type of feeling offseason.

Nice stuff QG.

1) Zimmer is a key. I just don't see Mike Brown winning a bidding war for a DC with the Redskins if that is who Washington really wants. He did a great job.

2) Palmer. It's interesting you mentioned Delhomme, because that was the comparison several Bengal fans that I know have also made. I will probably get pillared here by saying this, but I would not rule out the Bengals doing something crazy like taking Tebow at #21. Personally, I don't think they have made full disclosure on an elbow/shoulder injury. He looks like a pitcher that lost his fastball. They need to upgrade the backup. O'Sullivan stunk in mop up duty and they never gave J. Palmer a shot when they should have in 2008.

3) WR. They are going to have to address in the draft and free agency. The Simpson pick was idiotic. Who evaluated him as a second rounder? He will be cut before opening day. At #21, they have a decent shot at Tate from Notre Dame. A dream move would be to get Brandon Marshall. I notice he paid tribute to Chris Henry. Is there a connection? Mike Brown is too cheap to go for it and he may be unavailable in an uncapped year.

4) OL. I thought they would be horrible this year, but they were a pleasant surprise. Smith should be an upgrade with a full training camp. Do they keep Bobbie Williams?

5) Defense. I agree they need to draft a safety. It would be nice to bring Roy Williams back as he was playing well until he went on IR. If Tank does not come back, they need to address DT depth.

6) LB. A team strength. None of the injuries seem to be the type that will linger into 2010. Depth probably through the draft, but the starters will remain the same. Jones is getting up there in years.

7) Special teams. Other than kicker this is now a team strength. Cosby and Scott are great returners and Huber is an excellent punter. I could se them bring in someone like Stover to compete for the job. Graham can't be allowed to come back at any price. He held them over the barrel in 2009 free agency and then blew their season.

Other issues

Lewis has one year on his contract? It will be interesting if he gets an extension. Carolina did not give Fox an extension in a similar situation.

Larry Johnson will obviously not be brought back.

TE. Will Coffman get a shot or do they go back to the draft and free agency?

Offensive coaching staff. A lot of people screaming for Brat's head. I would be surprised if a move is made.

Great great news. Mikey Boy, perhaps against all conventional wisdom, has managed to break open his wallet and keep Zimmer :goodposting:

Here's The Link

How about that? :)

Anyhow, I also wanted to throw in a link to Marvin's press conference which outlines a lot of things and gives a few good hints as to where things might be going. Notable at the time (and now confirmed) was his optimism in keeping the assistants in tact (if we could only get Antartica State to sign Brat - but with Zimmer back I'll take the bad with the good).

Anyhow, here's the link to Marvin's press conference.

Marvin Transcript

One last bit of news, which on balance I think is good. The Bengals signed five players off the practice squad to the offseason roster. WRs Freddie Brown and Maurice Purify, DT Clinton McDonald, CB Antonio Smith, and OG (formerly DT) Jason Shirley. McDonald and Brown were 7th round pics this past year.

Anyway, a great day for the Bengals!

I will probably get pillared here by saying this, but I would not rule out the Bengals doing something crazy like taking Tebow at #21.
No stone throwing here. In fact, I mentioned in the Tebow thread that I wouldn't be surprised to see the Bengals draft him. I think he has the makeup to be a Slash-type player...a backup to Palmer at QB (I'm not giving up entirely on him yet), and a #3 or #4 WR. They can also establish a modified wildcat for him.
Lewis has one year on his contract? It will be interesting if he gets an extension. Carolina did not give Fox an extension in a similar situation.
I think we would have heard about it by now if there was going to be an extension.
TE. Will Coffman get a shot or do they go back to the draft and free agency?
He'll get a shot. There will be more pressing needs than TE in the draft.

Lewis didn't seem to alarmed about his contract situation. I'm sure they'll do an extension all in good time this offseason. Clearly Zimmer was the priority and rightly so.

I can't conceive of a scenario where we get Tebow.

Basically Jacksonville has in the most ridicululous fashion completely tipped its hand in this regard (I mean when the governor already is assuming they'll have Tebow...) and they pick at #10 or #11 (based on coin-flip). I really don't see Tebow going past there. I cannot fathom Mikey Boy trading up pretty much ever, but especially into the top 10. Heck, it's one of the blessings of this offseason that we'll have a guy in the bottom of the round who will probably be much more signable.

Now Benn at #21 I can totally see (of course I'm also an Illini homer so ya gotta take that with salt  )

Now if you get a guy like Tony Pike to fall to them in round 2...well a Cincy kid to groom over time as the heir apparent may make a lot more sense and be a little bit more palatable to the locker room as a whole perhaps. If he somehow were to drop into round 3 he'd probably become a must-pick guy at that point.

Taking a QB in round 1 would be throwing a hand grenade into the locker room. I just don't see that happening.

-QG

That signability factor also probably speaks against a Round 1 QB.

If we don't resign Coats who's gonna drop all of Carson's passes? :) On a more serious note, yeah he's gotta go.

Cook is a no-brainer to keep.

Graham :banned: The sooner we get a replacement the better. If that means taking a 7th-round kicker and clearing the deck like we did with Huber so be it. Graham's a good person, but a lousy clutch kicker.

Hebert is one of those deals where he's mainly a special-teamer. In a perfect world a younger-cheaper guy will come in and take that spot.

Hodge is more or less the same deal as Hebert. More special-teamer than quality depth guy.

Tank is definitely a keeper and the Zimmer signing should cement this.

LJ: I think he'll get enough of a sniff elsewhere that it'll take care of itself. Keeping 5 RBs really is a bit too much and the other 4 are more valuable to the team. Also, since we gotta secure Benson hopefully long-term this would help in the good-will department clearly.

Jones: Looks like a training camp battle to me that he'll probably lose to a draft pick.

Kelly: Here I disagree with Verbal. Top notch blocker, huge locker room guy. If he hasn't recovered he could be a difficult training-camp cut but given the paucity of talent we have at the position, if he's healthy, I'd like to see him back.

Livings: agree

Mathis: meh. Any progress by Shirley will probably make him expendable if a draft-pick doesn't.

Jordan: If he can be had at a minimum I'm okay with it. I'm more keen on getting rid of O'Sullivan to be honest.

Roland: In a perfect world he'll be a great depth guy and not the starter but regardless he's a keeper.

Frostee: He's really turned around his play, I agree we should keep.

Bobbie: He's gonna be tough to keep, I think, but keeping the line together is definitely a priority. I hope he stays too.

Roy: Interesting case. Really he's more a depth guy now and I don't know he'd be worth the salary they'd need to pay him. Still he's a Zimmer guy, and if Zim endorses him staying I'd be okay with it.

On a side note, as noted by cincyjungle.com the fact that Zampese is able to interview for the OC job elsewhere all but confirms that Brat is going nowhere. :lmao: Oh well, Mikey's loyalty is probable a big part of why we were able to keep Zimmer so you gotta take the bad with the good.

-QG

Bengals need to get an impact player at TE, and i don't think Coffman is the answer. He can't block worth a lick, and he really is not all that fast(unless his foot has been worse than let on) If that is with the 1st rounder, then so be it.

Make teams respect the deep middle of the field, which will help Palmer return to what he once was-a promising, up and coming QB. Teams just sit back and tee off on wrs going across the middle. We don't even run plays in that area anymore.

Carson regressed a lot after losing Henry to injury. Then get a deep threat and help Palmer out.

If this is the best that Brat can do, then bring Zampese up. If Carson is injured, get the surgery done this month.

Jerome Simpson is a wasted, early, draft pick. Fielding 4 wrs in the playoff game was inexcusable.

Get better depth at RB. If Scott is the answer, then get him in the game. Running benson 38 times a game is assinine. Look at what you did to Rudi. Don't do it again.

Lastly, hire a GM, a real football man. Move Lippincott to Jerk Line Support.

Do you think Pike should go as high as 2nd round? I think he's a borderline 3rd rounder myself.
Some mocks have him in 2. If he's there in round 3 we definitely need to tab him.The funny thing is for all we know he could end up a high first rounder or drop down to the 4th round - combines and workouts can have a lot of sway in the process. Nobody though Jeff George was getting drafted any higher than the bottom of the first round yet 1 private workout later (where he through 70 yards on the fly no problem over and over) and suddenly he was #1 overall. Btw, something tells me they end up not drafting a QB.-QG

Currently, I think Pike is a 3rd rounder, but I also think he's a guy that is much more likely to be helped by the combine than hurt by it. He has great size and delivery, solid arm strength and decent smarts. Many of the knocks on him (leadership, work ethic, durability especially) don't get measured in a combine.

Coats - lol

Cook - keeper

Graham - lol

Hebert - I think you keep your special teams captain.

Hodge - eh.. if the price is right.

Tank - keeper

LJ - nah

Jones - nah... dropped for a corner in the draft.

Kelly - keep... great blocker and leader.

Livings - nah... I think Mathis outplayed him.

Mathis - keep

Jordan - keep and drop O'Sullivan

Roland - keep and you have your 4 OTs.

Frostee - keeper

Bobbie - keeper

Roy - nah... hopefully a safety is drafted.

This is a crucial offseason. The offensive line is getting younger, but the window with Carson, Chad and probably Benson is getting ever narrower. The clock is ticking on re-signing the stud young corners.

Three major issues as I see them.

1. Need another weapon in the passing game.

This can be in the form of a more adaptable offensive coordinator, instead of someone who sticks with his preseason plan. This can be in the form of a stretch-the-field outside threat, to allow Andre Caldwell to go back to the solid slot player he was earlier in the season. This can be in the form of a tight end or running back that can threaten the backers and make teams defend between the hash marks. Ideally, it would be all three. It's still possible that Scott, Coffman and Simpson play a role here, but it sure seems doubtful that any will live up to even marginal expectations.

2. Need to improve the pass rush.

Antwan Odom returning to form would be nice. I like the upside of Michael Johnson. Maualuga, should they play him on third down, might be an interesting blitzer inside. Another third down rusher would be huge, however, in generating defensive big plays and should be prioritized over the safety position on defense.

3. Need to not flake on the role players.

The defensive tackle rotation (Tank Johnson), safety positions, nickel corner, spread WR and special teams/depth will need to continue to be at least average. The schedule is much tougher next season, and though the injuries began to pile up over the last month, the major positions remained mostly injury free for much of the season. Really, only Odom and Henry were lost for any length of time. It was clear what the loss of Peko and Maualuga for any length of time would do to the run defense. Odom's loss hurt the pass rush severely. The passing game went in the tank with only a single WR loss. Losing a corner or an offensive lineman would be equally brutal. Smart decisions with depth will be key with the 2010 schedule.

Otherwise, while I don't think I'm a Carson apologist, I don't think he's the problem. I don't think he's injured. I think he's a rhythm quarterback -- witness his strong stretches of play when called upon to put the team on his back late in games when all his weapons were healthy -- who suffers when the offense asks him to throw once or twice a series and the team can't extend drives. I think Bratkowski's insistence on continuing to run Chad on deep timing routes and give his underneath receivers a chance to separate by using motion made Carson's job extremely tough. Seven step drops and deep timing routes with a less than athletic pass blocking unit is a recipe for trouble. Frequent drops and missed sight reads by underneath receivers without elite separation skills leads to short drives. Give Carson a trustworthy underneath receiver and alter Chad's routes at times and I think this offense moves the ball much more easily by staying in rhythm.

I really had trouble getting invested in this team again this year. The early run was awesome, but you could see the cracks developing from the usual inflexibility (save the Johnson signing) as the year progressed. The schedule is nasty and the player evaluation team is the same. It'll take a strong offseason effort to keep this group from slipping next year. That effort better not include drafting Tim Tebow. The character of the locker room is strong enough and I don't see a role for him given the current makeup of the team. The first round pick needs to be a defensive lineman, cornerback/two-way safety or receiving option. I'd be happy to see the team attack those three position groups only in this draft.

Great analysis Jene :lmao:

Btw, we have 1/2 an All-Pro!!! Leon Hall was named a 2nd-team All-Pro (tied for the spot with Asante Samuel)

In other news, Brat officially said he'll back for his 10th year :hophead: - apparently he said this Monday, I must've been hiding out of fear of reading that. Paul Alexander signed a three-year extension which is good news for the jelling OL.

Here's the Hobson rundown

The article also seems to indicate that the Bengals will be focusing more on extending their own players than looking outward. Jene will be happy that JoJo and Hall are prominently mentioned in this part of the discussion.

Bump for

1) any draft speculation out there

and

2) to see who the Who Dey faithful around here are rooting for in the Super Bowl.

Really gotta hope they don't go TE in round 1. Would like to see a pash rusher, safety, or WR (though I really think they can wait 'til round 2 on a WR)

I have to root for Zim's son and the Saints. That it's also Slim's hometown and a team that I generally have liked over the years puts me firmly in the Saints camp, even though I fear that the Colts will be to strong for them.

It's a cycle

We make the playoffs, then everyone gets arrested in the offseason, and then suck the next year......

Maybe we can cycle back in Odell in place of Rey? (j/k)According to the article I saw on PFT his BAC was .157  :lmao:The good news is that he didn't hurt anybody - but the thought there coulda been another tragedy like there was with Stallworth is just scary. I know Mikey Boy is cheap but I think it just might be worth the salary to have full time drivers for these guys (for that matter for everyone in the NFL). :( -QG

Looks like the NFL generally doesn't suspend or first offenses.

Here's the bengals.com article:

Right Here

Don't know what he might be facing regarding Kentucky law (guess my question is whethere there's a BAC threshold that could trigger more serious charges).

Anyhow, bringing this back to a football thread. It looks like we lost one of our strength coaches to the University of Kentucky:

Linky

Can't wait until things get going in combine mode and hopeully this incident was a blip on the radar.

-QG

:( yes - no other organization has had this happen to their players

Probably should've given this it's own thread as this is essentially a football thread.

How about that on Thurman? What a shame....

Not gonna belabor the point about the Maualaga incident, but how do you plead "Not Guilty"?

He hit some parking meters and his BAC was off the charts and he spent 7 hrs in the clink...allegedly. I mean...was he framed, was he abducted by aliens? How are you "Not Guilty"??

And, knowing what you know about the already tarnished reputation of the Bengals, wouldn't a sane person be extra, extra, extra careful about crap like this? Like, so careful, you have a rule that you just hire a driver if you're gonna get blasted that night? You gotta believe that Marvin begs his players to cut the crap...

It amazes me the amount of stupid people that are making ridiculous amounts of money.

The 'not guilty' is probably tactical - given that it is a motor-vehicle violation. It's not uncommon to initially plead not-guilty, talk to the prosecutor and try to plea to a lesser charge.

As far as what he was thinking - clearly he wasn't. Of course he wasn't there for all the arrests of 3 years ago so maybe that further contributed in the sense that he it's one thing to hear about the stuff another thing to be around for it. These guys think they are indestructible but this was just beyond stupid.

-QG

I was young like that once and dumb as a rock...but what I'm saying is, if you were Marvin Lewis, wouldn't you have a closed door meeting with each player and spell it out for them?

DO NOT DWI

DO NOT FIGHT

DO NOT MAKE ME LOOK BAD

Or you will get some type of punishment...I mean, that's what I'd do.

And I just read heard (speculation) that there were 2 young girls in the car with him, one underage...oh man.

So far this offseason...

1 Bob Bratkowski retained

2 Maualuga DUI

3 Rumors of a 36 year old Terrell Owens as a complementary WR and name changer.

C'mon Jene, those 3 are probably just making up for the fact that we get to keep Zimmer :shrug:It will be interesting to see the results of Ocho's campaign for Owens. Posing a slightly different question - at what $ level would you want to see Owens come here? That is if he's willing to take a minimum contract (yeah, I know, not likely) would he be worth that? Where's the line above which we shouldnt sign?True, if we're gonna get a problem guy I'd rather see Marshall but the price for him just might be too steep. If it's young guy, he's gonna have to bring the goods way more than Caldwell (who I still think has promise) or Simpson, that's for sure.Who else is out there on the scrap heap of free agents that might be worth getting?-QG

I don't think there's another late career renaissance in Terrell Owens career. He's still in great shape, but I don't see the deep speed and separation skills needed and he'll drop as many passes as he catches. That's before considering the Laurel and Hardy act with Chad. You're correct that there's no one else out there of quality, but TO isn't a quick fix for last season's issues in the passing game. I'd consider him only if there's no chance that he'll keep the front office from targeting multiple receiving options in the draft. The hope here probably has to be that Andre Caldwell gains more confidence and grows into a savvy and consistent underneath threat and the team gets someone that can draw the attention of a safety now and then on the other side. They have their own issues, but I'd probably rather take a shot on Chris Chambers or Antonio Bryant before Owens on cost-benefit ratio.

I largely agree. I fear Bryant will want more $ than we'll be able to give but I'd probably want him first of those 3.Kinda hope we go all Al Davis with our first pick and take a speed guy who's enough of a threat to let Caldwell work his magic like he did the first half of the year.-QG

OGOchoCinco People get your popcorn and yo sombrero n ponchos ready about 1 hour ago

OGOchoCinco This is gonna be awesome Mr. Child Please and I Love Me Some Me on the same field!! I would pay to see that. about 1 hour ago

OGOchoCinco OCNN NEWS- dear NFL please change the rules next year for myself and TO, don't fine us -just put our games on #payperview and make $ about 1 hour ago

I wouldn't mind them cutting Coles, taking his cap hit in an uncapped year, and taking the 4.6 million due him next year and giving it to Owens. Coles is owed 4.6 this year and 6.4 in each of the next 2 years. Every second they keep him is a second too long.

Matt Jones is now a Bengal

This is the one stray cat of the bunch I don't mind us taking a shot with.

-QG
Agreed. Hadn't even considered him, but I think he's a decent fit if he plays well.Pacman Jones wasn't playing anywhere near his best in his most recent stint. The return skills would be a nice add, but I'm not convinced he's a huge upgrade as a nickel corner and I don't at all like him as a hedge if either starting corner isn't re-signed in the next two years.

I don't think that's how they'd seem (i.e. as a Hall/Joseph fallback). I think they are more interested because it is a cheap 1-year contract they can make in the year before the lockout. I think they'll have a lot of these 1-year type deals even amongst the non-incarcerated free agents.-QG

Anyone else here want to see the Bengals make a play for recently released Antonio Pierce from the Giants?

Seems like a decent character guy? I don't think it's a black mark being involved with Plax and the gun, in Nov 2008.

I think he'd fill an immense need at MLB......Dhani has been serviceable, but it's time to move on....

Anyone else here want to see the Bengals make a play for recently released Antonio Pierce from the Giants?Seems like a decent character guy? Dunno. Probably will want too much in terms of $. From what I'm hearing here he was not liked at all in that locker room.-QG

When it's time to move on... Rey will take over the middle and they'll find a real sam.

Was not aware of that?

Seems I'm mistaken on that point - then again he kept seeking new contracts so maybe that's what I cought rom the radio heads. His injury history and the fact that as Kirby noted we really need a SAM still doesn't really make me want to see him come on the scene.-QG

What are the expectations for Cedric Benson in 2010? I've seen that the Bengals are in talks for a contract extension with him and his agent.

Will Larry Johnson stay with the team, will Bernard Scott see an increased role, or should we expect the same type of typical 25 carry load for the #1 RB in this offense?

Man, I hope, just not sure we can rely on Rey here......

They have already stated they will not persue LJ, but I can't see Benson lasting with the amount of workload dumped on him last year. They did the same thing to Rudi.....I'd say Scott and Leonard will split the extra work, which could be a lot if Benson breaks down

I think that Benson will actually get a load similar to this past season. They probably hope to shave maybe a few carries (say 5 or so) per game for Scott to keep Benson fresher, but I think Cedric will only really be happy if he gets basically every carry. And a happy Cedric is definitely in their best interest. I like Scott a lot and think that he could take on the job if Benson went down but I think he's probably a couple years away from becoming our bell cow. I believe it's about 99.9% certain that LJ will be gone. I think both sides probably figured it as a short-term arrangement. LJ will want to be somewhere where he has a better shot at being the starter or at least get a good share of carries. In Cincy he is defintively back #3.I figure that they'll end up with 4 backs dressed each game. Maybe having 1 on the practice squad.Benson-Scott-Leonard in his awesome 3rd-down utility role and then Jeremi or Fui at fullback.-QG
