***Official 2010 New Orleans Saints Thread*** (1 Viewer)

i just wanted to post my thoughts following the draft. here's who Loomis & Payton selected:

R1 Patrick Robinson/CB

I've posted this elsewhere but I don't get this pick at all. He's talented but shouldn't take over from either Greer or Porter. Even if we are going to move Jenkins to FS then he's still got to duke it out with Gay. Do you draft a nickel/dime player with your R1 pick?

R2 Charles Brown/OT

This is a good move. Jamaal is threatening to hold out. Bushrod was really uneven. Charles portends a move along the O-line.

R3 Jimmy Graham/TE

"Upside" is the operative word here. While he is a project, is his potential more than that of a hernandez or others? Given our propensity for injuries at this position, he could actually see time in a game this year.

R4 Al Woods/DT

He's going to be a space eater and help. Suddenly the D-line is full of live bodies!

R5 Matt Tennant/C

Heir apparent for Goodwin.

R7 Sean Canfield/QB

Meh. He's a practice squad candidate.

Overall, this was a decent draft. We addressed some needs indirectly. Brown and Sharper now know that they have no leverage with negotiating. It's sign or GTFO. We did not address maybe our biggest need - again - at OLB. Payton and Loomis said how they are comfortable with what they have already (despite the fact that we all know they were going to draft OLB/DE Hughes until the Colts drafted him at 1.31...) with Casillas, Dunbar and Arnoux. I'm not quite as sold as they are just yet. Dunbar is a ST standout and nothing more. Casillas could be interesting but he's very green. Arnoux was injured last year. Who knows?

Draft grade? B-. This could be a solid A draft if players develop into starters in 2-3 years or so.

I agree with much of what you wrote. I really think they were drooling over the prospect of Hughes until he was drafted by Colts @ 1.31. My one somewhat minor complaint about this regime though is they have a tendency(not always) is to sit and wait at their draft spot. I read from a lot of places that they really coveted Hughes. If that is true, I can't see why they did not trade up once he got to the late 20's in the first round.I don't particularly care for the CB Robinson pick either. I only hope that they were solely employing BPA and he was very highly rated on their board and believe he can actually push Greer & Porter for a starting spot. If not, then I just don't see it.

I like the OT Brown, DT Woods & OL Tennant picks. There seems to be some concern about LT Jamaal Brown's back, too. I am not sure whether or not it is healed, but at least OT Brown gives them an option and it seems that OL Tennant will be a good backup that could improve to starter in a year or two if needed.

The TE Graham pick for me is really difficult to evaluate. His ranking, depended on who's list you were referring, was all over the place. From the few snippets I have read, he is very poor at blocking, which is not surprising given that he only played one year of college football.

Those quibbles aside, they have won a Super Bowl last year, while I cheered them on from the comfort of my living room, so I will give them the benefit of the doubt.

love the fact that we got

as a UDFA. watch the play at 34 seconds where he blows up the offense's whole backfield. love it.

i don't think he's going to be much of a blocker ever. it's just too late in his development. however, there are plenty of TE's in the nfl - finley comes to mind - that are poor blockers. he just needs to learn his role on the offense. he can learn behind dave and jeremy.

So does this mean there's a good chance the Saints roll with Thomas, Bush, and Hamilton?
From every indication, yes. They made a point of saying that they wanted to keep Reggie. There have been reports about how Pierre and Loomis have been trying to hammer out a long term deal. He reported to the first OTAs without any drama. Hamilton is Hamilton. He can be the short yardage guy when needed. I don't think he has much upside unless an injury to either Reggie or Pierre occurs.

(RotoWire) Roy Hall reportedly signed with the Saints on Wednesday, according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune.

Analysis: Hall is a physical specimen but has been slowed by injuries the past three years.

Given the depth of the Saints wide receiving corps, Hall is a long shot to make the final roster come August.
