You also could use some flexibility in the seeding, flipping Kansas State with either Michigan State or Marshall to avoid a rematch of Big 12 opponents in the first round.
I still prefer the democratic nature of the 16-team format, giving every team in FBS a "realistic" shot of winning a national title. But I agree than an 8-team playoff probably would be the best solution, assuming the G5 ends up with a seat at the table.

I think that kills the regular season whereas the four team format enhances it. If anything, I'd split the baby and maybe go with a six or seven team playoff, perhaps adjustable even year to year, so that major conference teams that go unbeaten get a bye. Typically we don't get more than two unbeatens in given year, thus you go

You have so many more teams in it, but the one loss thing is a premium while you're rewarding excellence. Would we have an 8 team playoff without a two loss team in that scenario?

The simplest solution is often the best one. 8 game playoff. 5 conference champs get in. The other 3 are at large. Not original but it makes the most sense.

That's obviously debatable. I was just using the rankings for simplicity's sake in illustrating it. But that's an example of how a conference champion outside the top 10 (in this case, USC) can take up a spot that otherwise would go to a "deserving" at-large team, so all of the jockeying for position over the regular season remains significant. The significance decreases as you go from 2 to 4 to 8 to 16, but it's still there.
Obviously a lot can/will change over the second half of the season.

I agree. It does shorten the pool of at larges which can be both good and bad. Depends on the season. Right now, I'd say UGA gets in over Marshall and Conf USA has no business getting an auto bid.

I agree with this. Sure one or more mediocre conference champs might knock out a top-8 team, but if your squad couldn't grab one of the 3 at-large spots then too bad.

I also don't get why you are giving conferences like the Sun Belt an automatic bid. 5-2 Georgia Southern in there?

Yeah, waaaay too many auto bids for poor conferences in that 16 tea, scenario. Let those teams earn it based off at large spots. Hell, in a 16 team playoff there would be 11 at large spots. Only the P5 should get auto bids.

Wasn't one of the obstacles of an 8 team playoff the additional games? That could be an additional 3 games for a team.

Additional games is a weak reason against the 8 team playoff reduce the regular season 1 game. These teams are playing the Little Sisters of the Poor at least 2x per year anyway. We all win.

Man... 8 team playoff and I know this would be tough with the rivalry games thanksgiving weekend, but can you imagine opening the playoffs with two games Friday and two games Saturday of thanksgiving weekend?

Now, I suggest thanksgiving weekend but as I said In the post, I know it won't happen.
However, it makes sense since much of America has that Friday off. You get maximum eyeballs without going to a Sunday and the nfl.
You also clear the games and allow for the perception of "student athletes" with December finals and holidays.
When would you schedule these four games?

I watch/listen to most of his press conferences. I would estimate he has answered 75 questions about Jameis in the past 3 weeks. Nobody is going to stop asking because he says no comment lol.He doesn't seem tired of talking about it unfortunately.
