On that note...how do grade Mariota? He'll have to be a completely different QB at the next level...but he looks so good.

He'll get graded high on all the physical stuff. He's a stud but I don't love him in the NFL. I don't like any of these read option/screen guys. How can you learn how to run a complicated system at the pro level when you don't get the reps for it at the college level?

I would always want a guy who has run a pro-style system. At least at the top of the draft like that.

Oregon is running a pro-style system. This isn't 1978, with Earl Campbell rushing 25 times out of the I-formation.

Lol. How many teams are running this offense. Philly? SF? Maybe a few others? Nobody is talking about what you said (of course) but nobody is running a one-read offense in the nfl. When is he going to learn to go through progressions?

You're nuts, man. I'm actually trying to think of NFL teams which DON'T incorporate a substantial spread/read-option package.

Maybe just Denver, Houston, Indy and Baltimore.

Package < > offense.

The Bucs are another who don't at all. Atlanta. New Orleans don't. There's probably 25 more teams who don't run read option (don't know why you included spread).

To the point, there will be no square peg/round hole situation with Mariota. A team would be silly to draft him and not play to his strengths.

One of the biggest "What if's" that will always leave Cal football fans up at night is whether the tandem of Super Bowl-winning quarterback Aaron Rodgers and wide receiver DeSean Jackson would have delivered Cal that elusive berth in the Rose Bowl and the BCS national championship game. Cal lost three of its games by a touchdown or less and played Pac-10 champions USC at home the year after Rodgers left and Jackson arrived. It'd be hard not to imagine a senior Rodgers throwing to Jackson and thriving in 2005.Jackson went onto the Pro Football Talk radio show and discussed how Rodgers helped recruit him to Cal in the first place, and how Rodgers's ability to go into USC and dominate the Trojans defense so thoroughly, really struck a chord with the Long Beach Poly high recruit. Jackson dreamed of teaming up with Rodgers, although he never got the chance to do so, but he hardly begrudges Rodgers for leaving early to fulfill his dreams of being an NFL star (a dream Jackson himself fulfilled when he left Cal as a junior).
Yeah, that would have been a fun hookup to watch.

Yeah, Jay Cutler is doing a lot of read-option these days. He reads the defense and decides his best option is to throw an interception.

Mariota is Kaepernick, only faster, and with better vision. Any team that passes on him would be very foolish indeed.
I would say that's the obvious comparison. Crazy fast and athletic, throws rockets accurately. I think he might make better decisions than CK, but CK has already proven durable doing this in the NFL which isn't a given for MM.

Kaepernick didn't exactly come from a pro-style set, unless teams are running the Pistol offense I don't know about. I think that's the best comparison for Mariota, though I'd put Collin's arm strength above Mariota's and Marcus' accuracy over Collin's. And there's been some pro style system QBs that just flopped...Leinart comes to mind, though I don't think he knew what it was like to take a sack. Not too many SEC QBs making a dent in the NFL either.

Cam Newton's impact in the NFL was immediate. What kind of offense did he run at Auburn? Seemed like he put on a red cape and just did what he wanted.

Rare day when the wife is out of town and I could have the TV all to myself, and I agreed to swap with someone at work so he can attend his daughter's 16th birthday.

:bag:

At least I have a job where I can watch games whenever possible.

Wtf are you talking about re: the bolder. He routinely goes 3-5 options before pulling the trigger. Cal's defense is terrible, so he doesn't need to often. How else do you explain his ridiculous completion percentage and 1 Int?

I know SMU went through that whole death penalty thing and the #CJK5H and whatnot, but how have they gotten so dreadful again after being a bowl team a couple of years ago?

Abdullah doing work on Rutgers. 10 carries, 134 yards, 2 TDs, 9 minutes to go in the 2nd quarter. On watchESPN.com if anyone is curious about him.

Short of their team plane going down, there is no reason for Texas to ever be 3-5. And two of those wins came against North Texas and Kansas.

Texas gets robbed on a terrible 4th down spot, clearly should have been a 1st down
That was shockingly bad, game changing too. Why even have replay if you can't get it right with crystal clear video evidence?

That call took their chance of winning from 0.5% to 0%.
They were about to score and possibly make it a one score game, so they went from having a shot to having no shot. I didn't think I had to explain that. As bad as UT has looked they still had a chance.

Speaking as someone who's never been to the state of Kansas....how is K State consistently pretty good at football and Kansas is just brutally bad? Since 1991, K State is 18-5 against Kansas (KU won 3 in a row, 2006-2008, KSU has won the last 5 since). K State has been ranked in 11 of those games, and Kansas has been ranked once.

Is Kansas just strictly a basketball school? Like, say, Kentucky? Does anyone at KU care about football?

KSU has only been consistently good at football since Snyder first showed up in '89. His philosophy was recruit Juco heavily--take dumb talent that other schools don't want to take a chance on. KU's primary focus will always be BB. It didn't help them that they fired the only real successful FB HC they had. Even if it was probably deserved.

Pitt, 3 fumbles on 3 possessions. One was fumbled through the EZ for a touchback after a 74-yd run by Conner. Yellow Jackets turn all three into TDs and go up 21-0 less than 5 minutes into the game.
