Well, it was something for Minnesota sports. Minimally. That's all we can ask for really.
Minnesota fans impressed me. I thought games in their stadium were the most entertaining to watch because of how into it they were, including last round.
I wholeheartedly agree. I was cracking up when they started counting down the pitch clock yesterday. And it was loud. Loved it.

The ending 6(?) Hits in two games, not so much. As is the Minnesota sports slogan, "Maybe next year."

Interesting comments around analytics and mental makeup of players this morning listening to sports radio here in Houston. Seth Payne, former DT for the expansion Texans, and Jaguars, who turned out to be a pretty enjoyable radio host to me.

So they were talking about a Verlander quote from last night, when he was asked something to the effect of how Houston has maintained the level of success they have through so much player turnover. I believe the only players who have been there for their whole run are Altuve, Bregman and Lance McCullers. Verlander mostly so though of course he left this year before getting traded back. Anyway, the quote:

“There’s been a culture established here that hasn’t faded away. It’s still very present, and that’s a testament to the guys that were here before and the guys that remain here and the guys that are leaders of this ballclub,” ace Justin Verlander said. “They don’t allow slacking off, but they do it in a respectful manner. They expect the best of everyone because they’re giving their best every single day. What a great way to lead by example.

“I think our culture is something not tangible. Funny that (for) one of the most analytic-forward teams in baseball, something that makes this team so special is something that’s not measurable.”

So Seth's comment then was along the lines that he thinks one thing that analytics does for coaches and teams is it helps strip away the glitz and swag, the being impressed by physical appearance or potential, and boils things down to a more concise view of which players are actually helping a team the most.

And one side effect of that is that you're possibly going to end up with more blue collar mentality guys who might otherwise have been overlooked to some degree compared to the guys filled with more bravado, physical appeal, etc. And so being analytics-forward could help a team end up with more people of the kinds of personality that Verlander is talking about. Never really thought about the possible impact of analytics on the personality and mindset of a team. Interesting line of thinking.

Philly fans might regret all the "We Want Strider" chants last night. That's some bad ju-ju.

Looking at his splits, he was 4-0 against them with 2.38 ERA/0.81 WHIP and had 38Ks in 26 IP. Reminds me of the overserved Oregon Ducks fans chanting "WE WANT BAMA" in the heydays of Chip Kelley. No, no you don't. You do NOT want Bama!

It was awesome to see he remained a player on the field and didn't just become a spectator. Something we constantly reminded our 14U team about this past summer.
Our mantra was always if you ended up in the same spot that you started when the ball was put in play you are in the wrong spot. There is always somewhere you need to go every play.

WHAT ABOUT GAME 1!!!!!!!+7&

That's fair, though it's really hard to fault Strider in that one.

You going tonight?

No.... Saving my next go for nlcs/ws if they make it past this round

The Giants have been run by an analytics computer the last several years and have one of the worst clubhouses in the league.

baseball is dumb
Taking that kid out after 42 pitches when he was dominating the Dodgers is VERY dumb.
Usually I would agree that managers get into the bullpen way to early in the playoffs and it ends up biting them by the end of a series because their pen gets overused and overseen causing them to lose effectiveness. However, in this case Pfaadt has a history of imploding and giving up HR's throughout the season in the 5th/6th inning time frame. This usage and pulling him before that happens started happening as the year went along so this wasn't necessarily against normal usage for the season.

I totally agree it could backfire but there's also more context. A few weeks back, when asked by an interviewer re: something he would change about baseball, Strider responded:

The fans. Absolutely, there should be no fans, 2020 season, no fans... Get rid of the fans, it’s too loud. It’s too loud, everybody be quiet. We don’t need the cheering, we know you’re watching. I don’t need the fans... You stay out the stadium, I mean, back it up. Let’s do a no lower-bowl thing. … Upper decks, great. Outfield, phenomenal. We don’t need you around the dugouts. Just try and be quiet.

Tongue in cheek - probably. Kernal of truth - most likely. Monumentally stupid - absolutely.

And if you let Philly fans know they get under your skin, they're gonna do everything they can to make you really feel it.

Meanwhile, a LOT of baseball fans think the Astros are a bunch of cheaters and no amount of word salad from Houston is going to change those minds.

Thanks for taking a thoughtful look at possible impact of analytics and turning the topic to ****.

Just telling you what some of the average Joe Sixpacks think about the Astros' ways. It's very hard for me to separate their success from cheating to win.

Go Texas.

Well then. Let that dooomass have it Philly fans.

Throw all that out the window IMO. Philly’s hitters are in playoff mode. They’re mutants living in human bodies at this point. Every last damn one of them.

The one thing I like about the Astros is that they're managed by Dusty Baker.

Your organization is great at analytics, but also obnoxious, arrogant and classless. So what do you do? Hire the exact opposite - a lovable, well-respected, old-school baseball guy who has no idea that strategy has evolved over the past 150 years. And it worked out. Good for them.

Yeah, it's hard to root against Dusty.

But as a life-long Rangers' fan who has never tasted the joy of a WS victory, I must now root against all of Houston.

I really don’t like these Phillies uniforms. I like the colors, but not the look of the uniforms. Maybe I am traumatized by seeing them as a kid when they just pathetic, with Ricky Jordan pretending to be a cleanup hitter and don carman walking 58 batters in a row

I love them. Where's Tug McGraw???
He’s dead from a brain tumor. Thanks for bringing it up.
