Interesting comments around analytics and mental makeup of players this morning listening to sports radio here in Houston. Seth Payne, former DT for the expansion Texans, and Jaguars, who turned out to be a pretty enjoyable radio host to me.
So they were talking about a Verlander quote from last night, when he was asked something to the effect of how Houston has maintained the level of success they have through so much player turnover. I believe the only players who have been there for their whole run are Altuve, Bregman and Lance McCullers. Verlander mostly so though of course he left this year before getting traded back. Anyway, the quote:
“There’s been a culture established here that hasn’t faded away. It’s still very present, and that’s a testament to the guys that were here before and the guys that remain here and the guys that are leaders of this ballclub,” ace
Justin Verlander said. “They don’t allow slacking off, but they do it in a respectful manner. They expect the best of everyone because they’re giving their best every single day. What a great way to lead by example.
“I think our culture is something not tangible. Funny that (for) one of the most analytic-forward teams in baseball, something that makes this team so special is something that’s not measurable.”
So Seth's comment then was along the lines that he thinks one thing that analytics does for coaches and teams is it helps strip away the glitz and swag, the being impressed by physical appearance or potential, and boils things down to a more concise view of which players are actually helping a team the most.
And one side effect of that is that you're possibly going to end up with more blue collar mentality guys who might otherwise have been overlooked to some degree compared to the guys filled with more bravado, physical appeal, etc. And so being analytics-forward could help a team end up with more people of the kinds of personality that Verlander is talking about. Never really thought about the possible impact of analytics on the personality and mindset of a team. Interesting line of thinking.
