There were so many pitches called in this game that were not strikes for both teams.
Was it consistent for both teams? If so, then there isn't anything to complain about. Everyone knew what was being called that night. The problem comes in when the same pitch is called a ball and then the next time a strike. As long as the calls are consistent everyone can adjust and that is a part of the game.

Go to robo-ump and you will get the same complaints as many pitches that don't look like strikes will be called causing people to lose their minds. The best is the hybrid where the batter or pitcher can call for a quick review (happens in seconds) and the game moves on. Gets the more egregious calls correct but still allows for some game to game nuance.

If you followed these Yankee teams for the last 5-10 years, their offensive futility in the playoffs is not a surprise. HR or nothing approach does not work in the playoffs when you only face good pitching.
This is not one lf those Yankee teams this year.

We have contact linedrive hitters in this lineup this season.

Last 10 years I agree.

This season……disagree. Baseball is a streaky game too. We had a lot of barrels last night that found leather.
I’d be curious what their team batting average was this year.

First two guys get on in the first and 3-5 can’t come up with a hit set the tone last night.
Yankees ranked 9th in the MLB with a .248 average

More importantly they ranked 3rd in OBP% .333

And 3rd overall in OPS .761

They were productive and had a lot more gap to gap contact than their recent past.

Like Gally pointed out…..everything gets incredibly magnified in the post season.

You gotta be hot at the right time. It’s what makes baseball such a difficult game to handicap in the post season.

I expect the Yankees to somehow pull this out but would not be shocked at all if they don’t.

That’s baseball.

Ask the Atlanta Braves.

Thanks. Judge and Soto removed, the team BA has to come down quite a bit. I would also argue that they walk a lot as opposed to hit singles, so that skews the OBP.

Hope I’m wrong, but these first two games don’t give me too much confidence this is a WS team.

If went around and removed every teams top two hitters…..it would almost certainly have the same affect.

And walking a lot is a great thing. Getting on base is the goal no matter how you do it. OPS is a great measure of extra base hits and on base percentage.

The Yankees have a good lineup this season. And more importantly their pitching has been better than years past.

We shall see how it all plays out.

OBP is the same whether you get on with a walk or a hit. OBP does not count on base by error or fielder choices but walks and hits are counted the same.

That’s my point, saying OBP is high doesn’t necessarily mean the lineup is filled with singles/doubles hitters, could just be guys that take a lot of walks/hit HRs.

The statement you wrote was that talking walks "as opposed to hit singles, so that skews the OBP".......but it doesn't skew the OBP. That is the exact same whether you hit singles, homers, doubles, walk or get hit by pitches. The OBP doesn't skew..........its the exact same for those things.

I should have said it skews the point that a high OBP proves the lineup is filled with singles hitters.

I for one would like to congratulate my Padres
Your padres? I thought they were “your Rangers”?
If it wasn’t for your horrible taste in football teams I’d think maybe you were a bit of a front runner…

Relax, boomer. As was stated in here more than once, I placed a future's wager on them to win it all. So for this postseason, they're MY Padres.

Great week for me.....my Chiefs move to 5-0, my Florida Panthers about to defend their Stanley Cup, my Celts looking like a dynasty....what a time to be me! ;)

Oh. Well there’s no way they don’t get past LA so you’ve got that going for you

@ChiefD , how crazy would it be to have our teams (KC and Detroit) playing for a spot on the WS?!? Unbelievable that we can even be having that dream right now.
I said the same thing to a friend who is a Royals fan today. As a Twins fan, it would frustrate me knowing that the Twins were ahead of both before the epic collapse, but It would also mean that the Yankees and Guardians were both out which would be great.

But they'll choke eventually because that's what they do.

That's what my Rangers used to say!

What a Padre game!!!! I’ve never been in an atmosphere like that, so nuts, so loud, so electric. One of the funnest things I’ve ever done in my life.
I'm sure that was a heck of a good time for Padres fans.

As a dodgers fan it was slightly encouraging to see Walker go that long and it seems unfair to tag him with 6 earned runs since the D let him down. Had already counted this series as an L unless they went up 2-0 but if they'd somehow pulled out the w last night it might have been possible but they're done. Pitching is spent, Freddy limping around, mookie and sho in slumps. Bullpen game for the dodgers. Always a recipe for a W.

It’s baseball where anything can happen so it’s far from over in my mind.

As a lifelong Padre fan, I’m not sure I can dislike a team more than I dislike the Dodgers. But Freddy is showing a TON of heart and grit, and if I made a list of players I’d want on my team Mookie would be right at the top.

I don't really dislike the Padres, I even liked them back in the day when Tony Gwynn was around, but ******** like Machado make it easy to root against them.

Him and Profar.

Profar is like, the nicest guy around. I dunno....former top prospect for the Rangers, couldn't stay healthy, bounced around, an afterthought coming into this season, undrafted in fantasy baseball and yet, in his 30s he's playing his best baseball. Got a billion dollar smile, mild mannered, I'm not understanding the hate. Yeah, he gamed the crowd with that catch, so what?

Machado is a special kind of dBag. That guy is always mouthy. He is red hot, though....gotta like that.

Agreed on Profar GM. He’s literally one of the nicest guys around. Besides having exactly that type of reputation around the league (literally called a “glue guy”) a very good friends kid is on the same little kid baseball team a Profar’s and says in person that’s absolutely true too. Says he’s always smiling, is great with his kid and super gracious with everyone who comes up to him.

Manny gets a bad rap for his immaturity in his early 20’s. In his time with the Pads the dude has been fantastic. Very much the team leader and professional. He’s grown up a lot but many don’t want to see that.

I mean.....I'm obviously cheering this team on, but Machado's antics are a tad.....dramatic, no? He's always barking and finger pointing and chest pumping and yelling and it gets a bit boorish. Just settle down sometimes, dude. You're not going to fight 28 other guys on the pitching mound.

Is it just me or are the AL games boring in comparison to the NL games? Even the AL announcers are boring.

Considering all the pitching talent on their 40 man, it's wild to think the Dodgers are sending Ryan Brasier out as their SP in an elimination game.
