One thing that might be a benefit of a 12x4 is it actually could make travel better if they tweak the travel pods as a result.

Right now there are 3 pods with 5, 6, and 5 cities. With 16 groups I pretty much would think they would put 5, 6, and 5 groups inside those pods.

The travel zones as they exists:
West:. LA, SF Bay, Seattle, Vancouver, Guadalajara

Central:. Mexico City, Monterrey, Houston, Dallas, Atlanta, Kansas City

East:. Toronto, Boston, New Jersey, Philly, Miami

With 12 groups it probably makes more sense to go with 4 pods of 4. Each pod hosting 3 groups and then (if they go with the 2 sets of 6 groups model) pairing those pods for the knockout rounds.

So you have this:
West: LA, SF Bay, Sea, Van

South:. Guadalajara, Mexico City, Monterrey, Houston (or Dallas or Miami instead of Houston)

Southeast: Kansas City, Atlanta, Dallas, Miami (or Houston in place of Dallas or Miami)

East:. Boston, Toronto, Philly, New Jersey

Much more compact.

Likely would pair west with South for knockouts but if you absolutely HAVE to have Canada do a knock out in Toronto you could pair East and West I suppose.

Under this plan USA would likely be in East pod, Canada in West Pod, and Mexico of course in the South Pod. Though USA could also do Southeast (as the East cities have enough diasporas that it is not a big worry.

Putting Miami in the Southeast pod is basically designed to eliminate a Miami to Vancouver travel scenario in knockouts.
