***Official Academy Awards Discussion Thread*** - Anora is the Big Winner (1 Viewer)

Great call on Anora, gents. Have to see it now. Good Oscars but again too long. Conan did well. Brody’s speech was the most self indulgent of all time. Get over yourself dude

Re: Anora, I’m really hoping that its incredible night at the Oscars doesn’t create unrealistic expectations for those who have yet to see it. It is extremely well done, and well acted. And it has a sort of authenticity about it that is missing from many other films. But it’s also a sexually graphic, dramatic, slapstick humor, somewhat depressing, love story that doesn’t indulge in deeply dramatic moments. It’s just sort of an odd ride that I really enjoyed, but can see others asking what the fuss is all about. But I think the fuss is well deserved and I’m looking forward to checking out Sean Baker’s other films.

I see it as a very sexually charged modern screwball comedy with the grit and grime of a 70s New Hollywood movie.

Eta: I got the screwball conclusion on my own, Ringer writer added the 70s part and I thought he was dead on. Good article at the Ringer about it.

I found the article you are referencing. A really interesting read. It opens with a description for Anora that seems to fit - an uproariously funny, achingly sad tragicomedy.

In fact, voters were only encouraged to watch all films in a given category and were permitted to only vote in categories in which they felt qualified to do so.

and then from the AP article

But in recent years, what films get watched by academy members has been increasingly seen as a significant factor in what wins. At the same time, the publication of anonymous Oscar ballots has often featured members confessing that they didn’t get around to watching some notable films or not finishing lengthier nominees.

I think this is an excellent move. Not that I follow the awards closely and I can't remember even watching them except for the 90's when Billy Crystal was hosting but I like movies and I have opinions (Anora, Parasite) but I feel like this throws every "winner" into doubt.

It’s not any different than any other award. Sports writers aren’t required to watch a meaningful amount of every player for MLB or NBA awards either. Voting for governor you aren’t required to know any of the actual policies or experience of any candidates. You should and I think most do but some people vote carelessly. It’s just part of anything decided by a large group voting.

I know, I get it. It's just Hollywood patting itself on the back. It's not like I care that much or anything but I was gullible enough to think that Oscar voters might watch all the necessary movies first. Adds tons of conspiracy fuel, so that's a little exciting. They also had 10 movies for "movie of the year"-they should probably dial it back to 5.

Maybe the new Oscars rule will start a trend...

Sure would be nice if people at least knew who and what they were voting for in elections. I can live if they get MVP wrong from time time.

The new thing going around is how to get past the view restrictions so you can still vote without sitting through any of the movies.

To comply with the new rule, you either submit a form with the date, time, and location you saw a movie (which you can lie about, just check the movie listings online), or, watch through the Academy's screening app... which allows you to watch at 1.5x, and you can just open it in a separate window, hit mute, and minimize it to the background. Once it runs through, you're eligible to vote.

No one wants to sit through the movies to vote on them.
