I wonder how many times he's going to call Driskel "Brantley"?

Well, he corrected himself, but that's like the 4th time he's done it.

@slmandel: Both CFB playoff games had bigger TV audiences than yesterday's NFL playoff games, including one on network.

Far better product to watch.

Couple of things:

1. Is this really apples to apples comparison?

2. How much of this is the novelty of this being the first playoff?

None of this is to say this isn't a freakin' awesome format and will only get better as they add more teams. I just don't seen them as comparable. They are similar in that they are both football, but I think we should probably trend this one out over time. What were the world wide numbers for these playoff games? Anyone know?

Interesting. Since it's only a 4 team playoff, maybe comparing to the AFC and NFC champ games may be more apples to apples.

ETA: I couldn't care less about the NFL playoff games yesterday.

I don't really know what you're asking here. The ratings for the college playoff this weekend were higher than the NFL playoff games yesterday. Nobody needs to write a thesis paper here. :grad:

This game reminds me so much of a horrible midweek MAC game between two terrible teams and I miss it so much already somebody hold me

The assertion was it's a better product to watch because ratings were higher. I was simply asking if it made sense to use the ratings for the first ever playoff to some pretty bad NFL wildcard games in making that determination. To me it seems apples and oranges mainly because they are two completely different products at two different points in their maturation process.

The CFP games were semifinal games played at 5:00 and 8:30 PM on Thursday night, January 1.

I guarantee you that if they played the AFC and NFC Championship games at 5:00 and 8:30 PM on a midweek holiday the ratings would absolutely destroy the CFP ratings.

I think it'd be a lot closer than you want to believe...especially for it being the first year of the new system. I can easily seeing CFB playoff passing the NFL playoffs. The super bowl will probably always be the daddy especially if you consider the worldwide ratings.

AFC and NFC championship game audiences have basically doubled the 28 million that watched the college football playoff games over the last few seasons.

This was a perfect storm for college football vs pro football- four massive programs in the first ever playoff in prime time on a Thursday holiday, before a day most people didn't work. And on the other hand you had some really unappealing matchups on the NFL slate. It was so bad they put yet another boring Ravens-Steelers rerun in prime time on Saturday night.

You guys are all focused on all the wrong stuff here. Nobody is trying to compare apples to apples.

But when is the last time any sport beat an nfl playoff game at anything?

The World Series.....THE WORLD SERIES can't even beat a week 7 NFL game.

Yup, fair point. I think the "far better product" line is why people starting the apples and oranges discussion, but it's remarkable just as a one week phenomenon.

Don't disagree that it's an awesome feat to take down an NFL game...it sounded like you were going further than that in your original post. That's all. Otherwise we agree. I don't think ratings go anywhere but up for CFB playoff games either.

Baseball is a regional game. Gambling on football is a national concern.
