Florida principal to plead not guilty to charges over hypnotizing students

NORTH POINT, Fla. (NewsCore) - A Florida high school principal plans to plead not guilty to two misdemeanor charges for hypnotizing students, two of whom later committed suicide, his attorney told NewsCore Thursday.

Former North Port High School principal George Kenney, who has taken hypnosis classes but is not licensed to practice medicine, has said he hypnotized students for academic and athletic improvement after obtaining parental permission.

Prosecutors say that Kenney's hypnosis sessions violated criminal health care laws. He was charged with two counts of unlawful practice of hypnosis.

Kenney's attorney Mark Zimmerman told the Herald Tribune that Kenney undoubtedly hypnotized students without the supervision of a physician on school grounds. But whether Kenney broke the law hinges on whether he performed "therapeutic hypnosis."

"We are scrutinizing evidence to see if that was the case," Zimmerman told the newspaper.

Zimmerman told NewsCore that Kenney would on Friday enter a written not guilty plea, a common procedure in the state of Florida.

"The only way to examine the charges against to you is to plead not guilty," Zimmerman said.

Kenney, 52, faces up to a year in jail if convicted. He has not been arrested and does not yet have any scheduled court dates.

His hypnosis sessions first garnered attention from authorities when one of his students committed suicide in April.

According to the Herald Tribune, Kenney hypnotized 16-year-old Wesley McKinney three times, including the day before his suicide.

Brittany Palumbo, 17, also committed suicide five months after being hypnotized by Kenney.

The principal initially lied to investigators and said he had not hypnotized Palumbo but eventually admitted to doing so.

Zimmerman said there was no connection between the hypnosis and the suicides.

An investigation spurred by McKinney's death revealed that Kenney's practice was far more widespread than originally thought and that he had not always obtained parental permission from students before hypnotizing them.

The inquiry alleges that Kenney performed hypnosis on 75 people at the school despite verbal warnings to stop by school district administrators. In addition to students, investigators said Kenney hypnotized parents and school staff members, as well as the children of staff members.

Kenney has been reassigned to an administrative role within the Sarasota County School District and will resign from his job on June 30 when his contract expires.

North Port, Fla., is approximately 90 miles (145km) south of Tampa.

TY Topes, long overdue and I didn't want to be the one to do it. Florida seems to attract some of the most bizarre, heinous, and unusual stories.

This is stupid.
And there's really nothing anyone can do about the terminations since Florida is an at-will state, meaning employers can fire an employee who doesn't have a contract "for a good reason, for a bad reason or even for the wrong reason, as long as it's not an unlawful reason," Eric K. Gabrielle, a labor and employment lawyer at Stearns Weaver, told the Sun-Sentinel. Gabrielle said there was no apparent violation of the law in this case.

Deputies: Newly released inmate burglarized cars in jail parking lot

By Barbara Hijek March 18, 2012 08:22 AM

Gabriel Allen Kirkpatrick was just released from jail on a domestic violence battery charge on Wednesday, according to a news release from the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office.

The 38-year-old Crestview man didn't make it out of the jail's parking lot before he ended up back in the slammer.

Okaloosa Sheriff’s deputies say he went into the jail parking lot and attempted to break into cars. He even unscrewed the radio antenna from one car and tried to use it to gain entry, the report states.

Kirkpatrick was placed into custody and taken back inside for processing.

Again.

After reading about the cannibal case in Maryland recently, I said to a friend, "look out Florida, we've got your number" when he reminded me that in the same news cycle was the story of a man eating another man's face. In Florida. ELITE.

Naked: Inga Swanson was shot dead by two off-duty police officers on Saturday after she confronted them at a party in Hernando County, Florida

The naked woman who was shot dead by two off-duty police officers on Saturday after a confrontation was spotted wandering aimlessly around a nearby wood moments before.

Inga Swanson, 42, is said to have approached Tampa police officer William Mechler, 26, and Hernando County sheriff's detective Rocky Howard, 31, acting strangely before returning a short while later 'armed, naked and irrational'.

One or both of the officers then opened fire, killing Swanson, according to police. She died at the scene around 1.15pm.

Now two men have come forward saying they saw her naked in the woods just before she was shot, pulling over to ask if she was OK before taking pictures of her.

Al Eylward and Robert Collins spoke to Bay News 9.

Mr Collins said: 'She was literally walking down the road straight at us. So, we pulled up alongside of her, and at that point I looked out the window and I asked her, I said, "Are you alright?" And she said, "Yeah, but I'm a little bit confused".'

The men said they only took pictures because they did not think anyone would believe them without any evidence.

A short time later she walked inside a house holding a cross in her hands, they said.

'She held the cross up and made a circle like this and said, "Antichrist, Antichrist, this meeting is over",' Mr Eylward explained. 'And as she did that she stopped, turned around and walked back.

'At no time did any of us ever feel threatened and the only thing we ever saw in her hand was the cross,' he said.

Fifteen minutes later the 42-year-old was dead.

Mr Eylward said: 'This is a tragedy. It is, it really is. I had a friend that I was explaining this to and she asked me why I didn't call the cops right then and there, and as she said that it occurred to me that I should have. I should've called the cops.'

Swanson's boyfriend David Simpson today said she was extremely religious and though that 'the end times were near'.

He also said the gun that she was carrying was an antique that only holds one bullet and doesn't fire.

Hernando County Sheriff Al Neinhuis told MyFoxTampaBay that Swanson 'was just acting irrational... It was obvious being naked she was not in her right mind.'

Swanson who had apparently not been invited to what was a family gathering, left briefly and returned armed, police said.

Sherriff Neinhuis said: 'They asked her to leave and after a while she did leave and the detective called the Sheriff's Office to let us know there was a woman in the area who was acting irrational and naked.

'She came back with a weapon and confronted both the Tampa police officer and my sheriff's office detective. She came with a weapon and I would surmise that they felt their life was in danger.'

Cell phone pictures shows Swanson walking in a wooded area in Spring Hill. Al Eylward and Robert Collins said they ran into her shortly before she was shot on Saturday

Investigation: Police cordon off the rural scene. Swanson's boyfriend David Simpson today said she was extremely religious and though that 'the end times were near'

Two men said they saw a naked Swanson about 15 minutes before she was killed, it emerged today.

Al Eylward and Robert Collins took photographs of her walking through a wooded area without any clothes on for fear that nobody would believe them without evidence.

Pictured: The wife gunned down in spa massacre where husband shot three dead before turning the gun on himself

They asked her if she was alright and Swanson replied that she was a 'little bit confused'.

Minutes later, the two men were looking at a home when they said Swanson walked with a cross in her hands.

One of the officers, William Mechler. The two have both been suspended pending an investigation

Mr Eylward told BayNews9.com: 'She held the cross up and made a circle like this and said, "Antichrist, Antichrist, this meeting is over." And as she did that she stopped, turned around and walked back.

'At no time did any of us ever feel threatened and the only thing we ever saw in her hand was the cross.'

Both the police officers involved in Swanson's death have been placed on administrative leave as the Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigates the shooting in the Spring Hill community.

Howard has served six years, Mechler four. Tampa police said Mechler was 'off duty and acting in the capacity of a private citizen.'

Lt Cinda Moore, a spokeswoman for the Hernando sheriff's office, said in an email late on Saturday that she could not comment on what the woman specifically said or did or whether she was told to drop the weapon.

The Hernando County sheriff's office does permit the carrying of service weapons when off-duty, she said.

The Tampa-area shooting comes two weeks after a naked, unarmed University of South Alabama freshman was fatally shot by a campus police officer after going to the police station there and pounding on the glass.

Police said 18-year-old Gil Collar had taken LSD and acted aggressively when an officer came outside carrying a gun.

The officer repeatedly backed away from the student before firing. An attorney for the student's family says Collar never touched the officer and the fatal shooting never should have happened.

The shooting led to protests by students.

Authorities have said a grand jury will review that shooting to determine whether charges should be filed.

Jacksonville father finally nabs peeping Tom, police say

A Jacksonville man told police his family had spotted someone looking through the windows of their home on several occasions, at times finding damage to window screens afterward.

Sunday police received a call from the man's 15-year-old daughter who said her father was restraining a man in their yard.

"The victim told me she was seated in the living room when she saw a sillhouette outside the back window," the officer said in the report.

The girl told her father, who then confronted the suspect outside.

When police arrived at the home in the 6000 block of Forest Stump Lane, they found the father holding James K. Lowery, 60, on the ground in the backyard.

"The suspect had minor injuries due to the complainant confronting him," police said.

According to property records, Lowery is a neighbor of the family.

Lowery, chief engineer at WJXT TV-4, had no explanation as to what he was doing in the yard, but admitted to getting there under his own power even after drinking "an entire bottle of wine," police said.

He has been charged with trespassing with intent to commit an offense, public intoxication and resisting an officer without violence, according to the Duval County jail website.

Man kills neighbor's dog for no apparent reason

A man waking up for the first time at his new residence in the 6700 block of Juliet Lane Sunday morning went outside to smoke a cigarette and let his dog, "Sloopy," out as well.

Sloopy wandered over to the driveway next door, so his owner began calling him.

About 7:40 a.m., Kenneth Wayne Martin, 57, opened the door and shot Sloopy with a 12-gauge shotgun, killing the dog as the owner watched, according to the report from the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

When the owner approached him, Martin said, "Don't call the law, I have a bad heart," according to the report.

He did anyway.

After Martin was detained, he told police, "I made the biggest mistake of my life," according to the report. "I have no reason for what I have done."

Martin is currently in Duval County jail on charges of felony animal cruelty and discharging a firearm in public.

Excessive playing of Alanis Morissette incites battery

Jacksonville police arrived at a home in the 1400 block of Palm Avenue Sunday night to find a man with a large cut on his face and an unusual explanation.

The victim told police his boyfriend, 24-year-old Allen Blair Casey, hit him in the face with a plate because he was listening to Alanis Morissette, according to the report.

Casey had fled the scene, but was located at a park a short distance away.

"I asked the suspect if it was because he was listening to Alanis Morissette and the suspect stated, 'That's all that — — listens to.' "

Giants fan upset over game shot at deputies with AK-47, officials say

OCALA, Fla. - Deputies said a man shot at them as they approached his home in Ocala early Tuesday morning while responding to a domestic disturbance call.

Authorities were called to Juniper Trail Course at about 12:15 a.m.

They said Richard Braccia, 50, was upset over the New York Giants football game and shot at deputies and a patrol car.

"I'm a Giants fan too, and I got upset," said neighbor Doug Aprea. "Not that upset."

According to a report, Braccia's wife called 911 after he became violent and threw her against a wall and kitchen counter. She told authorities he had been drinking all night and then went to the bedroom to load guns with ammunition.

Officials said the woman told the 911 dispatcher that Braccia said, "There was going to be a shootout at their residence."

Deputies said Braccia fired at least three weapons at them and then went back inside his house.

"He was using three different firearms, possibly a shotgun and maybe a handgun," said Marion County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Jenifer Lowe.

The gunfire blew out the window on one patrol car and a black truck.

A women inside the home was able to get outside safely, and no one was hurt in the shooting. Aprea and a dozen more residences had to be evacuated during the incident.

"The armored SWAT truck pulled up, knocked on my door and escorted my family out," said Aprea. "They drove us up the street and we stayed in a SWAT van for about an hour."

The SWAT team responded and authorities were able to talk Braccia out safely at around 3 a.m.

Investigators said they found a .9 mm handgun, black shotgun and AK-47-style rifle inside the home.

He was charged with domestic battery, three counts of attempted murder on a law enforcement officer and one count of tampering with a victim. He is being held without bond.
