i dont know what to do...its above my pay grade
The President can't do anything even if there is a move to be made.  He's a lame duck, and the President-elect is a man whose foreign policy boils down to (and I'm barely even paraphrasing here)  "not our problem, and stay the #### out of America."

Your  "I don't know what to do" attitude is exactly five weeks too late.

who said i was mad at anyone? just asking a question seeing he is still the President
He can't do much, the backlash of an outgoing President taking significant military action without directly being attacked would be historic. Obama has done something. He has consistently pushed to allow more refugees into  America. Over 10,000 Syrians have come to the United States. It could have and maybe should have been more. However, it was clear the new political winds were against that.

why isnt Obama doing something?
I said it's complicated, there's a whole thread with scores of pages on what Obama has and has not been doing. However what he has never done is close his eyes to the immorality of the Syrians and Russians and said the US has no role or opinion on it. There are policy mistakes and then there is outright amorality.

The Syrian Civil Was has been going on for 6 years. It's nothing new. Maybe in 2012 Obama could have worked more with the UN when it seemed like a ceasefire was possible and before Russia became involved. It's a mess. There are so many groups fighting there. It's like GoT, none of the sides are good. The average Syrians lose no matter who wins.

Holy crap some of you are so defensive ...im mearly asking a question....yikes
I don't know if it's defensiveness. I'd say it's more frustration and anger, mixed with a bit of amusement and a just a pinch of "I told you so."

We've been appalled by the prospect of America not doing anything in response to horrible things like this for months.  Welcome to the club, I guess.

Hey, he might do the right thing and cut ties with his business interests with taking the position. There's recent precedent for this. Oh wait...

Tiillerson: I guess I'll have to step down as ExxonMobil's CEO, Mr Trump. I'll resume my private career after faithfully serving the American people and my government. It's a sacrifice but America is worth it....

Trump: Whoa, whoa, whoa there, Tilly. You don't mind me calling you "Tilly" do you, Tilly? Anyway, who says you have to step down? I'm certainly not. You can do both. Like, I'm still a producer on "The Apprentice" and POTUS. SoS and CEO aren't mutually exclusive.

Tillerson: Really?

Trump: Delegate, Tilly. Delegate.
you remember that part about how Trump doesn't need to divest because presidents are exempt?  Well, that doesn't apply to cabinet members, only POTUS.

If Tillerson maintains any shares or interest in Exxon as SOS, he opens himself to bigly conflict of interest concerns.

Perhaps I was too clever for my own good or simply not clever enough?

They'll just pay him off on the end-around after he sells out America -- like all the Republicans did on Medicare D.

no, you are good.  Just expanding on something I hadn't really thought of.

The concern with Tillerson is his hodlings with Exxon, especially with what the Ruskies want to do in the Arctic.  If he completely divests, I'm less concerned about the conflicts of interest.  Whereas Trump doesn't legally have to divest, Tillerson does so that relaxes me a little bit.

How awesome would it be if Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio and Lindsey Graham and Rand Paul teamed up to get revenge on Trump.
Throw McCain, the guy who got captured, in there as well.

I don't agree with Rand on much but that guy during the debates sounded like the only conservative on many issues on stage.

Rubio and Cruz will only screw with Trump if it's politically to their advantage.

You really think Tillerson divests?

Agree. They are both weasels like Chris Christie.

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but Exxon has a mandatory retirement age of 65 - Tillerson will be stepping away from Exxon soon, no matter how his confirmation goes.

Now, his financial interests in Exxon will remain, and he will benefit bigly if the SOS rolls back sanctions on Russia...

Will Trump start tweeting about how Taylor Swift doesn't deserve her accolades? We all know how easily impressed he is by whomever he meets.

This is actually sort of tricky since apparently his options vest over the next 10 years.  I mean I can see XOM just accelerating them, but even them doing that doesn't get rid of the quid pro quo nature of the acceleration.

Assuming Congress thinks the shares are a conflict, doesn't he have to divest them (and I'm sure he wants to anyway to avoid the cap gains tax)?

Don: "If you can remember the name of the department, I'll put you in charge of it"

Rick: " oh crap....it's the one with all of the uhhhhhh.......Dept of.....electricity?"

Don: "close enough!"

He really does want people to think it's out of his mind. He has to, right?
I assume the Kanye thing is to take attention away from the Tillerson appointment, his unwillingness to remove conflicts of interest, the lack of press conferences starting to get attention after cancelling one yesterday, and other missteps this week.  Hasn't been his best week.

Kanye is mentally ill. Two weeks ago he was in a hospital. Feels a little icky that Trump is using him like this.  Although that's from the perspective of a normal person's sense of decency, not that of a #####-grabbing Putin puppet.

On the bright side, it must make 90% of Trump voters pretty queasy to see him standing next to Kanye.

"Just watched @The_Grammys- So biased, inaccurate and bad, point after point. Just can't get much worse.  Taylor Swift is a fraud.  Sad!"

Oddly, I feel like saying good for him.

I have come to hope Trump spends his time for the most part in Trump Tower, dealing mainly with appointments (he loves his hiring & firing), trade negotiations (he loves his "deals") and being satisfied that he beat Hillary, and then leaves triumphantly without re-running in 4 years having been the most successful, least productive President ever. Then we can get back to normal, after having some fun for a few years. This is my "better case" scenario, and we all cross our collective fingers that nothing really crazy happens.

It's always tough with Don who is a master media manipulator..... but things can get a little Chauncey Gardnerish too... 'Don just did something vacuous and egotistical, what does it mean?'....
