@Henry Ford why are you leaving?  I always enjoy your insight and sense of humor.
Because I'm in part a civil rights lawyer and have a great deal of work to do on that front right now, despite still recovering from heart surgery not so long ago.  I just don't have the energy.  In part to avoid idiotic discussions like the one happening upthread, regarding whether there's been an uptick in hate crimes in the past week or so, or will be further on the rise.

They are.  They will.  Misattribution will happen on both sides.  Anger will boil up on both sides.  The left will believe that the reason its candidate lost was racism or misogyny.  The alt right, while dangerous, will heavily believe that this vote is a stamp of approval on its horrible ideals, which it isn't.  And everyone will just ignore the fact that what happened here was not a vote on ideals.  Ideals are what political strategists form campaigns on.  When roughly half the union workers vote for the Republican, this is about anger and fear.  Those are related to hatred, but hatred isn't the only outlet for them.  Many voters, especially in union states, simply haven't heard anyone tell them that things are going to get better - show up and tell them that - in 20 years.

And then the markets fell.  And then they lost their homes, and their farms, and their kids can't afford to go to college, and they're watching someone who makes half of what they do - half - have a better chance at life because $65,000.00 a year for your house means you can't get financial aid for anything.  So you get student loans for your kids, and you know they'll be just as broke as you are for the rest of their lives, and you'll never pay off your part of them that you promise you will, and you get a cheaper apartment instead of your multi-acre farm house and you buy the health insurance that you're legally required to buy and it just keeps going up.

And you work 40 hours a week down at the elementary school shuffling papers and being told you're an idiot instead of on your family's farm, because Monsanto bought that from the bank that took it, and now your 65-year-old father has had two jobs in his life - at the factory downtown and on his own family's farm - and there's no more factory and there's no more farm - is going to "retire" by losing the ability to pay rent because he can't get a job now doing anything so he'll take the $800 a month he can get from social security and $127 goes to Medicare.  And you go home at night and sit in a room and watch your small town fade away out the window and wonder why Hope and Change never showed up in rural Wisconsin.  And why the CEO of the bank that took your farm and sold it to Monsanto just got a golden parachute made out of your family's life and the lives of millions of other families.  And the factory that failed to properly invest your father's pension and then went bankrupt hasn't had any consequences.  And you wait to die.

And someone showed up in town and held a rally.  And he told you he'd make that go away. He doesn't have all the answers, and he doesn't know exactly how to do every piece but he sounds very confident about it and he's a big wig billionaire from New York City.  And the establishment hates him.  And that's okay, because #### the establishment.

He's also got some racism and sexism and flat-out bigotry in him.  But you know what?  Most people do.  If they really admit it, deep down, most people do have some of that.  Maybe his is worse, you don't know, but you're not choosing him for "anti-bullyer in chief."  And he's listened to you.  He must have, because he's addressing the things you are afraid of.  There are illegals coming over the border, and some of them might be terrorists, and some of them are from the cartels, and who knows what else?  These refugees - you don't understand how they weed out the bad ones and he says they really don't.  You don't know how to check if that's true, or even why you'd believe those ###holes if they told you it wasn't because it's not like whatever the rules are they stopped 9/11.  Or that club in Orlando.  Or that guy and his girlfriend in California, whatever their name was and wherever exactly it was.  And what he says has hope.  Not for everyone. But there wasn't any hope for everyone with any of the other guys, was there?  Because here you are.  And Obamacare costs $800 a month and your kid is calling for money from college because her rent costs $1200 a month - and she's sharing an apartment and that doesn't include food or books or anything - and you know what?  The other party put up someone who basically works for the banks.  Is the status quo. Is a confirmed liar who doesn't care about the rules, and you are here following the rules and getting killed out here.  And you're not choosing between two sets of ideals - racism and bullying and misogyny vs. hope and light and fairness.  You're choosing between a woman who represents the last 20 years since someone listened to you and the guy who came and listened.  And he's the only one who doesn't call you a ####ing idiot and a redneck and worthless and he doesn't say your opinion doesn't count.

So you vote for the guy.

And this is not a novel story, guys.  And it's not about someone desperately trying to keep women out of office or desperately trying to hate.  But the more we argue like this, or set buildings on fire, or flip over cars, the more it's going to become hate.  And that will not go away. That will take thirty years to deal with.  This is someone who was the worst Democratic candidate imaginable for this time period still winning the popular vote and coming within a hair of winning 300 electoral votes.

Start at page 84:

That was written almost 20 years ago.  It's not novel.

And I really don't want to argue about that for the next three months until he takes office.  That said, I think he's going to make a terrible President and his economic ideas are horrible.  Hope I'm wrong.

Paul Ryan was on Fox today talking about repealing Obamacare but also privatizing Medicare.

I remember Trump explicitly stating during the campaign that Medicare wouldn't be touched.. now what?

Sounds like Ryan thinks he can control Trump. It remains to be seen if Trump will green-light everything the Republicans try to pass.

@Henry Ford I only know about your situation what you've been gracious enough to share.  I'd just hope (along with many other FBG's I'm sure) that you'll at least drop in from time to time and offer your unique blend of wit and wisdom.  Good luck to you and your family and your town going forward.

I can think of at least two positions which might appeal to Democrats from a .... Pres. (this will get easier...) Trump:

- Infrastructure spending as jobs bill. Trump's was larger than Hillary's and he called Pelosi before he called McConnell, to specifically discuss this.

- Preserving SS & Medicare. Hillary and Ryan were pretty much on the same path.

I'm willing to bet that President Trump will at least once go tell Paul Ryan to pound sand.  A) He's not beholden to the GOP or Paul Ryan, and B) He's way too unpredictable to just play nice with anyone.

Perhaps if liberals didn't try to force mentally ill men to be in the same bathrooms as our daughters there would be less anger. Perhaps if globalist/open borders didn't try to rape the middle class with slave labor there would be less anger. Perhaps if the media stopped spreading hoaxes for ratings there would be less anger. Now the Trumponing begins.

Right, I'm not saying there aren't bigots, conspiracy theorists, or even flat-out white nationalists in the movement to elect Trump.  That's the whole point of my post.  It's just that the limited number didn't get him elected.  They weren't voting for Clinton anyway.

Conservatives want to force mentally ill men dressed as women to be in the same bathrooms as your sons.

Trump wants to ":modernize" Medicare whatever that means.
More cyber?

Trump' argument is that he can grow the economy enough to pay for the social entitlements we have all grown used to. This should sound familiar because it comes from the old 80s-90s Democratic milieu that he emerged from. That's Kucinich, Jesse Jackson, Dukakis stuff.

Rubber is going to hit the road eventually.

Are you saying No Bigots - CT  voted for Hillary? Do you not see how hateful some Hillary supporters are towards Trump voters? They are literally dragging us out of our cars and beating us.

Trump voters on trade weren't voting for Clinton but if Clinton didn't cheat and rig the nomination process they may have voted for Bernie over Trump on trade issues. I know I would have voted Bernie over any Republican other than Trump.

Also, if you think Media spreading hoaxes is a CT and not actual fact you aren't paying attention or you're a liar.

The electoral college is a disaster for a democracy.
Can't wait to see the Twitter exhibit at the Trump Presidential Library in 2021.

I can't figure out what your first sentence is supposed to say. Connecticut? And I certainly don't mean to say that there are no left wing bigots.  It was inartfully worded.  My point being that the white nationalist or reactionary racist right wing movement wasn't going to be voting for Clinton.  And there aren't enough of them to win a presidential election.

And yes, that's my point - Trump wouldn't have beaten an old Jew from Brooklyn whose parents were immigrants, because Trump didn't get elected because of bigotry.

Ryan also realizes that his only real chance to pass some of this stuff is by the end of the summer 2017.  After that, his Reps will be thinking about the 2018 midterms and the one thing they don't want to be facing is some vote privatizing Medicare.

It's an interesting dynamic, Trump for all his faults is a pragmatist while Ryan is a true believer.  They'll be allies until Ryan really pisses him off.

I thought your post was great, but wanted to take an opportunity to wish you well on the road to recovery HF.  You're a good dude.

If you can't handle discussion perhaps it is best you do go. Cya later.
One of the reasons that my post above has roughly twice the number of likes your profile does is because it isn't a matter of whether I can handle discussion.  I don't create new profiles for new discussion eras.  I have more important things to do.  While I appreciate that you have a perspective, finding out what yours is all about isn't as important as those things.  Good luck to you.

Whatever he is advised to respond..just like Obama, Bush, Clinton, Carter and everybody before them.  There are people much smarter and that have way more information than the presidents.
In Trump's case that is a very low bar, though

Reports from BBC and others are that he is "reconsidering his pledge to repeal Obamacare." Also, Newt has said that Trump won't likely spend much time trying to get Mexico to pay for the wall, it was just something he said to help win the election.

No offense but after the media has been wrong about everything this election I will do a wait and see with what Trump is going to do.
Why even bother saying this? You know you're just going to agree with whatever President Trump says is best.

http://thehill.com/blogs/ballot-box/presidential-races/305607-peter-thiel-joining-trump-transition-effort

yessssssssss

Tech mogul Peter Thiel has joined President-elect Donald Trump’s transition team, the campaign said in a release Friday.
Very smart guy

My favorite quote about this election came from Mr Thiel himself

“But I think one thing that should be distinguished here is that the media always is taking Trump literally. It never takes him seriously, but it always takes him literally. I think a lot of the voters who vote for Trump take Trump seriously, but not literally.”

No offense but after the media has been wrong about everything this election I will do a wait and see with what Trump is going to do.
Yep, I agree.

Here's the full snip and it could be anything:

Yet, Mr. Trump also showed a willingness to preserve at least two provisions of the health law after the president asked him to reconsider repealing it during their meeting at the White House on Thursday

Mr. Trump said he favors keeping the prohibition against insurers denying coverage because of patients’ existing conditions, and a provision that allows parents to provide years of additional coverage for children on their insurance policies.

“I like those very much,” Mr. Trump said in the interview.

...

On health care, Mr. Trump said a big reason for his shift from his call for an all-out repeal was that Thursday meeting at the White House with the president, who, he said, suggested areas of the Affordable Care Act, widely known as Obamacare, to preserve. “I told him I will look at his suggestions, and out of respect, I will do that,” Mr. Trump said in his Trump Tower office.

“Either Obamacare will be amended, or repealed and replaced,” Mr. Trump said.
- The GOP has a problem because there is still a filibuster waiting for the full repeal. They could do what they did last winter and send a bill repealing most but not all of it. They could also send a new health care plan to overlay it.

Lets wait and get the voter suppression report.  I'm not saying that's why Hillary lost, but we know that this was the first year w/o Voters Right Act and 800 polling places were eliminated - and that certainly is racially motivated.

Drain that Swamp!

Fla. AG Bondi added to @realDonaldTrump's transition team. Trump Fdn gave illegal $25K gift to Bondi's campaign grp.

More proof that the people who bought Trumps lies are fools.

but, but, but... EMAILS!

we know that this was the first year w/o Voters Right Act
No, we don't know that because your statement is untrue.  The Voting Rights Act is still in effect.

In 2013 the Supreme Court ruled that the formula used in Section 5 of the Act which pertained to certain counties needed to be modified to reflect the current conditions in those counties.  It was a narrow ruling, not the abolition of the entire Act that many questionable sources reported.

Two weeks ago many people on the Left were on their moral soapbox screaming: "How dare Trump suggest he might not accept the election results!!!"

This week some of the same people are rioting and screaming that:  "We won't accept these election results!!!"

Total hypocrites.

And now we have this...

Millions sign petition urging Electoral College to elect Hillary Clinton
Wait, you mean there's an actual Electoral College?  I always thought it was just a fancy way of saying how many votes each state actually got.  Where were these mother####ers when GWB stole the election from Gore?  We could have avoided a lot of #### over the last 16 years.
