The "Republican Party" is whatever those who form it want it to be so it won't be destroyed regardless of what happens in this election.  The only real problem I see with the Republican Party is that they've sold out their working class supporters to big business for 30+ years by refusing to control the border.  The wall and rounding up illegal immigrants isn't a solution but if they can come up with a reasonable way to control the border then they can bring the working class back to the Party.

The problem with the Republican Party is that they've pandered to the very bottom of the barrel for decades with the anti-intellectualism, science denial, and thinly veiled xenophobia. Trump is just a symptom of the real problem.

Personally I'd have more respect for them if they refuse to let him be their standard bearer for the next 5 months and let the trailer trash go figure out if they want to ride the party off a cliff or be part of something that could be viable again. In 2020 this starts over again and the issues will be more or less the same. Let them crow about it now, but everyone can plainly see his candidacy was a clown show and the party was only acting in its own self-preservation. It won't permanently damage the party. Those voters have nowhere else to go.

Absolutely. They need to stop catering to the Bible-thumpers, Tea Baggers, and general white trash that have taken over. Tack to the center and run on actual fiscal responsibility and small government.

Hopefully Hillary and the newly Democratic Senate will pack the SC with some truly far left justices that will actually come take your Bible and guns away.

Not a single one of them ran as a social liberal / fiscal conservative. The party could tell the Cruz, etc to go eff themselves if they wanted to -- they don't have to let anyone run as a Republican. The extremism has totally turned off most of the country.

I know that if he was a legit business savant and was actually worth $10B it would sway a lot of people, and that makes no sense to me. I consider POTUS to be one of the most complex and difficult jobs in the world, and he has zero experience in government. His qualifications as a real estate investor are about as relevant as Ben Carson being a good surgeon.

Agreed. It's appalling that we have to stretch to something so irrelevant to find even a whiff of qualification for a Presedential candidate.

 
Nobody will be willing to take up the nomination if the Repubs don't allow Trump to do it. It'd be political suicide to do so. Hell, it could be public life suicide for that matter. Would you want to be known as the person who lost the worst election ever (sans Mondale)? You'll be written about in books forever. No one is going to want to do that. And, people think the Repubs have a plan for Paul Ryan to be that guy? The Repubs should be hoping Ryan can keep his job as Speaker come November.

Like another poster said just before, the religious, Tea Baggers, and other loons need to not be listened to in order to make the Repubs respectable again. I've said the same for awhile too. Kasich was the best Repub in the process this year. Look how serious people took him. That is sad.

I don't like Hillary either, but she doesn't deserve to be compared to Trump in any way whatsoever. Pretty sure the country can survive another 4 or 8 years of sleazy self-serving politician. A race-baiting moron that defaults on our national debt and gives nukes to the Saudis? Not so much.

I think aside from the obvious self conscious narcissism and the fact he views himself as glamorous, which is just weird, if you take it at face value he thinks he is essentially hawking political ideas and messages like a model sells soap. Even weirder still like a model he may or may not even believe in the product he's selling. Who knows.

 
one thing that's cool about footballguys is seeing an old thread bumped that you posted in, and reading your discussions and thoughts from a long time ago.  Many of us have been here since 2003 or earlier - there's a lot of old stuff out there.

I expect that after November, a lot of FBG's will be embarrassed that they actually supported this guy.
