Some people on this board make it hard to interact with a general demeanor of charity and understanding.

Obviously not you, k4.
Oh ####, I just saw you were the last post, and I'm not kidding that I gulped and thought, "I hope I didn't do anything to disappoint Henry Ford," because I actually do value having the respect of those I respect.

Obviously not you, Sconch.

Oh...errrrr...I have something to tell you.
I'm trying to gracefully exit. You, Henry, Oliver, and the rest of GMTAN, as always, allow no such grace. There is no validation sought; I don't need it. You all speak for yourselves quite well and quite often for the rest of us.

But please, keep arguing.

We're at three dramatic exits so far, and in such a short period of time.  A bit like a Trump tweet-storm.  Anybody want to bet we'll get another one...because it's just too hard to ignore me?  I promise, I am not as interesting as I'm being made to appear - really nowhere near worth such obsession.

Kind of funny, that someone who glories in pointing out how absolutely predictable it all is, seems to be the most predictable of all.  Might we be dealing, with this and other hurled insults with a case of - what's that word I keep hearing recently, damn my vocabulary is just NOT good enough, let me google it.  Oh yeah, "projection."  It was fun as experimental theater for a while but needs new material, because it's become a real snoozer.

3...2...1 until the craving for attention and validation - emphasized by constant reaffirmations, though no one asked, of not needing either of those - just becomes too much to bear again.  Have at it, as far as I'm concerned.  If it bothers me, I'll go to "ignore" but I can't imagine ever needing to.
bored, but clarifying.

For a guy who touts his vocabulary, I'd think you'd know the meaning of "graceful."

Can't wait to see how many "last" exits you have by morning.  I will gracefully allow you the last word - or god knows how many words - tonight.  Giddy with excitement over tomorrow, though!

Others were touting and making fun of my vocabulary; I said nothing until prompted. You know that. Shoot, I think you were the first to pick up on sycophant and try and make it into something. Then hortatory came along, and all was lost.

I'm really not a fan of this, um foofaraw, as HF would say. I'm just not backing down. You had a million times and a million ways to share your stories; and you did so now, when convenient. God bless, good luck, and grace.

Exhorting us to do a thought experiment. It's in the post.
I'm thinking you might need to claim artistic license then. Because merely using the phrase imagine if you will doesn't make something hortatory. Hortatory is usually thought of as encouraging or to exhort. I didn't feel encouraged and I didn't see any exhortation.

Any time you're asked to perform a thought experiment with a subsequent harangue, you're urged.

It's colorable, at least. Probably correct in its implication.

eta* Believe me, I thought about it. I'm likely right. Perhaps queried might have been a better word. We were queried.

But were you urged earnestly or urgently? No not really. Which is why I said you need to claim artistic license.  I find your usage strained at best.

Uh, yeah, it was earnest and breathless (not necessarily urgent) to ask us to perform the thought experiment and then follow it up with many message board paragraphs.

It was clearly, both in its tone and length, an ask in an earnest way.

I'm not backing down from that usage. Shoehorned, unlikely, when one thinks about it.

Oh, I'll allow it.  By all means, please be graceful. (Or whatever Rube Goldberg-like construction of polysyllables you'd use instead of "grace."

It's pretty clear that wasn't an encouraging speech. So you failed the first test of proper usage of the word. Seriously go with the artistic license thing.

As I said in the slightly derailed Clinton thread. Can we get back to ripping Trump? Only over there I said Clinton. VocabChat is fun for me but it must be boring for others.

It was, brother. It was exhorting you to do a thought experiment. It's pretty clear. I'm being nice now and smiling. It was hortatory in language and in tone and in context.

Popularity: Top 20% of words

Simple Definition of exhort

  • : to try to influence (someone) by words or advice : to strongly urge (someone) to do something

*like perform a thought experiment about a page-long message on a message board.

I occasionally use big words that I don't quite know the meaning of, in an effort to make myself sound more photosynthesis.

" I'm not sure how to avoid its relevance to what I'm going to ask you to do." - K4

hortatory. To exhort. To ask to do something.

As long as your posts fulfill my adolescent fantasies of persecution, I'll defend my totally indefensible position while doing fantastic violence to the English language. Looks like me against everybody, .because my fragile self-image can't tolerate criticism or honest self-reflection.
Fixed it for you.

This visage, no mere veneer of vanity, is a vestige of the vox populi, now vacant, vanished. However, this valorous visitation of a by-gone vexation, stands vivified and has vowed to vanquish these venal and virulent vermin vanguarding vice and vouchsafing the violently vicious and voracious violation of volition.

Rockaction, best thing to do with Oliver is to offer to meet him face to face. Tell him you'll be in his city in a charity golf tournament or something and he should send you his address so you guys can settle it like men.

I swear this will work. I've seen it done. Guarantee if you make this challenge both he and Krista will back off.

Since everybody else is going as Ken Bone for Halloween, he is going as Obiwan Kenboni.

For some reason I don't quite understand, my facebook feed has absolutely blown up with pro-Trump posts lately. Some of these memes are beyond ridiculous with their inaccuracy. It's pretty disappointing seeing some of the people I know re-posting  them :(
