Lurker Extraordinare
So, the Elder Scrolls Online breakdown:

First and foremost, this game took an hour to update. Straight out of the box. An hour of just sitting there watching the progress bar hardly move.

Once it updated, I couldn’t log in. The N American servers were swamped so I had to log in through the Euro server.

First thing I notice once I’m finally updated and logged in: It’s laggy as hell. Which, I guess is to be expected considering I had to port through the Euro server.

Played for about two hours or so. Game looks great. Plays ok though the controls take getting used to. At first, I hated them, but I realized as I was about to log off that I had more or less gotten used to them.

Questing system leaves a lot to be desired. Assuming what I was taking for the quest system was indeed that. As far as I can tell, there’s no way to tell your character level or XP progress without backing out to the character screen. No idea how much xp you get per kill or completing quests. There’s no notification at all whatsoever.

I played as a wood-elf archer and the targeting is a little clunky. As far as I can tell, there’s no way to zoom in when aiming. I have no idea if there’s a damage difference between a half and a full draw (on your bow) though I think I’ve come to the conclusion that there is. There’s no damage indicator to tell you how much damage you’re doing to a baddy, just the health bar over their heads. I’m hoping there’s a way you can turn on numerical indicators so you know exactly how much damage you’re dealing out.

Sprinting is easy, ala CoD style, which is nice. Maneuvering is… clunky but that could just be because I’m not used to it. I visited a couple of shops, but I didn’t sell hardly anything as pretty much everything I had was worth zero. Even the spare weapons I had picked up. You could ‘sell’ them, but you’d get no money for it… Um… ok.

The map system looks good, but I couldn’t figure out how to switch between quests (again, maybe just because I don’t know how). I’d also like an actual quest list. In Dragon Age, you could go to your notebook and view a list of active and completed quests. From there, you could view details of each and then make an active quest your main one, and then jump to it’s location on the main map. Made it super-easy to run through your quests. So far, I don’t see anything like that on ESO.

That and since it’s a MMO… there’s idiots all over the place jumping around, emoting and acting like morons. That gets old in a hurry. I somehow got put into a group chat a couple of times (I have no idea how) and having to hear all these kids yelling and screaming is too much. Had to stop and figure out how to leave the stupid chat channel. Odd that it lumped me in there without a confirmation or anything.

So anyway, so far… blah!

Feel free to post your thoughts. I'm going to give it through the weekend. If I haven't started warming to it significantly in that time, I'm selling it.

I'm on PS4. I did the pre-download the night before (6 hours with no disc on high speed Xfinity).

I couldn't get in on North American servers either...the fix I found on twitter was to go in the EU servers and accept the end user agreements there (after already accepting NA's) and then go back in on the NA servers. Then it worked fine. I'm not sure you can play with other players in NA if you're on the EU server...just a warning.

Hm. I'm going to try logging in through the NA servers tonight and see what happens. I had read last night that if you created a character on the Euro server, you weren't able to play that character on the NA servers so we'll see what happens.

Not especially loving my archer as it is though. Seems like it takes forever to draw a bow. That and the magic bow I found is out of charge, but it's not like I have any money to buy soul stones with which to recharge it...

On a PC, not Xbox, but just started this. Kind of a slow start as it's different from Skyrim and also my first mmorpg. I'm now at level 10 and sort of have a feel for things and really enjoy it.

I started my second character, bringing the (in)famous Groc Al-loc (aka. The Big Gay Orc) to ESO in Daggerfall.

I could be wrong here, but I think this game favors either magic or up-and-close melee types. I couldn't see someone surviving early on as a sniper.

I'd hate to start over/ I probably should have early on though - I'm a Breton and it's clear from the race skills they expect Bretons to be mages. Which I have little interest in. I've alos done a poor job applying my skill points. I put some into advanced blacksmith and clothing and now I get daily quests for items I can't make : /

Otherwise I'm pretty happy going at it with sword and shield. Completed my first group (4) dungeon. We all got killed and one didn't return. The 3 of us went back in, stayed close together and targeted their healers first. Can't remember the last time I've had such a feeling of accomplishment in a game - seriously felt like celebrating after we won.

Yea, the group dungeons are a lot of fun. I had a blast doing that Swindle...blah...blah dungeon with the spider daedra queen.

The skills you get from the Undaunted skill line are tailored for group play too. Someone in my group already had the first skill, "Blood Fountain?" and cast it at every boss battle. It provides health reg bonus plus extra healing. That damn fountain kept my level 6 butt alive.

Also, if Big Gay Orc wasn't gay, he'd want to give it to those Wyrd witches like a madorc. Hell, he still might; he'll just close his eyes and pretend they're twinks or something.

Tip: choose a craft or two and get certified by the chick at the Fighter's Guild. Then do the quests posted on the boards outside the smithy. They're a great way to earn both gold and level up your crafting -- and crafting is the way to go in this game. The merchant gear is WAY overpriced.

Just received my copy, and am anxious to get it installed and take it for a test drive. Any other starting tips besides getting good at crafting right away? I'll hit up the online tips later, but thought I'd ask.

Playing this game would probably have the same effect on my life as hooking myself up to a heroin IV drip.

I'd say pay more attention to the race you pick than you would in Skyrim. You can't play Imperial unless you purchased the advanced version, and the races have a big impact on your available perks.

Cooking is pretty good skill too. I found a recipe for venison stew that adds +1100 max health for 35 minutes. All it costs is one dead deer, and those things are everywhere. I come back with like 6 or 7 blocks of meat to cook after every adventuring trip.

True. My first char is a dark elf nigthblade. Dark elves get dual wield bonuses, which is great for a sneaky assassin wielding twin swords.

Big Gay Orc runs with a great sword, which is great because orcs get health and stamina bonuses - let's me take more damage and swing the sword more.

Do the main story quests until the Prophet goes to his cave. He gives you some good loot, then basically sets you loose anyway.

Am up to level 18 w/ my Templar, and am really enjoying this game a lot. It's not exactly Skyrim, but for me, it's "close enough", and better in some ways (and not better in others - that fun sneaky/one-shot sniper build is not really viable - you can't zoom your bow.)

I would suggest picking the type of character that appeals to you and play it - don't worry too much about min/maxing (the racial bonuses are fairly small, and not worth stressing over. If you really want a Nord mage, play a Nord mage.) And like any Elder Scrolls game, almost anything is do-able. Mages with dual wielding swords? Sure.

Big Gay Orc is a Templar too. I really like the mix of fire attacks, healing, and then tanking with my weapons.

Also, the bow might be a viable weapon after all. I was in a dungeon with two guys who were spitting arrows at guys like machine guns. So I guess you can use skill points to increase your draw speed. They were hella effective.

Yeah finding good recipes is key. At first I hated going to the cooking pot loaded with ingredients and yet not able to make a single thing. Question: once you "use" a recipe, how do you recall what you know and can cook? I like that you can load up on something that lasts for 30 minutes instead of trying to consume something in mid battle - especially since I leanred the hard way that looking through your inventory doesn't pause the battle.

Completely agree. Looking forward to being able to create more cool looking armor though. Right now I kinda look like a dork and everyone else is running around in serious kick### gear. I'm at level 17.

Trying to decide which way I am going to go, thinking Dunmer Nightblade, Dual Weild Daggers and Bow. But have read that 2H might be the way to go since Bethesda sort of nerfed dual wield. Anyone have any guidance?

I'm having fun w/ my two-handed Templar. Have some offensive magic, two handed hits pretty hard, and healing.

For what it's worth, there a *lot* of Drizzt types.

My first char is a level 10 Dunmer Nightblade, dual wielder. It was fun, but I got tired of him rather quick. The build is limited, imo. I like my 2H Orc Templar instead. It's way more fun to torch people with sun magic and hack them apart while they burn.

What's this mean?

Anyone know the difference between "level" and "veteran level" ?

I keep seeing this and have no clue what it means. Do you hit a certain point where your character level restarts on "veteran" or something?

Oh, sorry. Drizzt is a fairly well-known fantasy series character. Dark elf, dual wield, etc. There's about 18-20 books devoted to him.

Thanks, I doubt I'll tire of the char as that's the type I like to play. Stealth Assassin who can kill up close or with his bow from afar.

Feel free to add me - corpcow on XBL. Any of you guys in/want to have a guild? Seems like there's benefits to that... I have basically just been playing this as a single player game :)

I'm a 30-something Khajiit Nightblade but mostly use staffs.

I'd be interested in a guild for sure. I'm usually a single player person as well, but there are a lot of advantages to having other members in a guild. For instance, one way to increase your Blacksmithing craft more quickly is to create your piece and then then trade it to one of your guild members for one of their created pieces and "deconstruct" theirs. This gives you more experience, and often the experience outweighs the small denomination you would have gotten from selling the one you created. Create 5 daggers and trade it to someone for five of their created daggers, and you get five times the Blacksmithing experience by breaking down all 5 of the daggers they created.

For those of you with Nightblade characters, do you find yourself using dual wield or staffs more often (at least those of you who can dual wield and also use staffs)?

Yeah I would be open to a guild....I am a total n00b think level 2 at most right now. Have played all of about 30 minutes.

I'm in for a FBGs guild. Level 13 Templar now. Been mostly playing single player, but would love to team up for the dungeons.

I really love this game, but feel like there's so much of it I'm missing. I've never explored the group play or guild side of things. Level 27 Cat Nightblade, Ripshorts, but I got sick of the dual-wield pretty fast, so now I'm leveling my 2-hander.

Fun game...total time suck, though.

I tried the Cyrodil PvP section today. It looks like it could be a blast, but was laggy as hell so most of the time I'd ride to a battle, find a guy to attack, and stand there pushing my skills to no avail while they destroyed me.

Not so much fun. Will not try again soon.

Thanks got the FBG guild invite and accepted. Couple of questions on that....what does that do for us? Do we have a guild "house"?

Second question - storage. Do you ever get a house like in Skyrim to store things or some other place to store your goodies?

There's a bank in the major cities to do this. You can access it with all your characters.

Ok next up...someone walk me through HTF to put health potions on a quick access wheel or something.
I'm still figuring this out myself. I get the health potion there by dragging it, but when combat comes, there's nothing quick about the 'q' key or that dumb wheel.

I'm on the console and have it assigned to a wheel but no idea how the hell to get the wheel to show up.

I'll take an invite to the guild - Lordd Valentine

Just beginning and at Level 5. Starting Coldharbour and already my inventory's full :(

Learning that inventory is a real mother####er. Also crafting is significantly different than Skyrim, which kind of sucks. WTF do I need 10 Iron Ore to make ingots?!?! How do I use all these glyphs I keep finding?? And am at level 7 now I think...maybe 8.

One big advantage to the inventory is that you can dump all your crafting items into the bank and when you go to a blacksmith station you have access to everything. You don't have to carry it with you. Same with clothing and wood. Whenever I head out of town on quests I have less than 10 items on me: some health boosts, some gems both filled and empty - that's it.

Be very careful about leveling up your crafting skills - you can outgrow your ability to make things in the crafting writs. For example I was happily doing the daily writ quests by crafting weapons with iron made from iron ore, which I was collecting out and around. Then I upgraded to be able to craft steel. Suddenly all of my daily writs requested steel weapons and I had the ability - but not the steel. I still had only iron and iron ore.

Thanks for the tip! But I don't have access to a f'ing bank. Since I am a nightblade the first area doesn't have a bank.

Is the FBG guild on PC, Xbox, or PS4? And what area?

Seamless cross-platform gaming can't get here soon enough.
