Damaged rental car (2 Viewers)

So, flew into Reno last night for a trip to visit some family, do some hiking and bouldering and camping, and go swim in Lake Tahoe.

Get in last night, meet inlaws for pizza. Get back to their place and crash out. Wake up in the morning to find out MIL backed out of the garage and forgot that we were there and smashed into our rental. Fun stuff.

Looks like my American Express covers damage so long that I denied rental coverage (I did) and paid for the rental with the card (I did). We could obviously go through the MIL insurance but maybe just easier to use the credit card coverage?

So question is anyone deal with their CC to cover rental car damage? We are out here and in CA for the nest week + so no hurry to figure this out, but looking for some help. Car is very drivable, just some driver side front end damage,

Yeah, I did with a Visa. They paid for the damages, but they didn’t foot the whole bill. Why? There are “loss of use” fees in some states, which essentially amount to the revenue the rental car company loses while the car is being fixed. For the the large SUV that we rented, it amounted to a couple thousand dollars, to repair relative minor damage, in my eyes.

Not sure if applicable in CA, but AmEx may be one of the few cards which cover LoU. Good Luck.

Unless you outright lie the rent car company will come for MIL insurance anyways. Then amex will cover LOU or other fees they charge which can be a crap ton.

By outright lie you could say it was a hit and run but you better come with a police report.

This. And it’s a really bad idea to commit insurance fraud. It will all come back to MIL’s insurance. Just report it.

I am not opposed to lying. I need a police report for a fender bender? It looks like something that could have happened in a parking lot or some ****. And something that could actually go unnoticed for a day or 2

I’ve done worse

I mean since we’re this far into the weeds on this….

Best/cheapest/easiest = using the MIL insurance provided she hasn’t had any driving infractions or accidents recently.

I assume Moops doesn’t want to hear anybody’s mouths on this and just wants it over- By any means necessary.

The way I read it was that it was going to be very obvious to anyone approaching the car

Yeah, IDGI. Why not just use MIL’s insurance, rather than making sh!t up? Does she not admit to hitting the rental? Or is she trying to weasel out of paying?

Mine wouldn’t want me convicted of insurance fraud
