***OFFICIAL*** FFA Heavy Music Thread - No banal, anodyne "Dad Rock" BS here.. (2 Viewers)

Posted in the other thread, but just saw that Opeth/Mastodon added their 2nd leg of the N.America tour.   Stops in CA, Philly, Milwaukee, Canada, and others.   Super excited, and will be preordering my tix Thursday for Milwaukee show.

Over the years, I've found myself moving away from metal from time to time. As a die hard metalhead growing up, there really wasn't a lot of room for other types of music. I ventured into jazz, classical, punk and have gone back to old school rock, metal and even 60's music. But it always gets me psyched when I find myself back on a metal kick again. I think it started back up with Deafheaven but it really got going by following the doom subreddit. Doom metal has always been my favorite sub-genre of metal and I'm really digging bands that I missed over the past couple of decades like Electric Wizard (currently my favorite), OM, Sleep, Acid Mammoth, YOB, Monolord, Windhand, Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats and so many more that I've only heard a little from so far.

I feel re-energized! :headbang:
electric wizards - dopethrone is a classic.

Im more of a stoner rock guy than doom. but the genres blend - monster magnet, kyuss, nebual, fu manchu. anything JOsh Homme or Brant Bjork touch I like.
Discovered this the other day (my kid had it on a list of CDs he wanted)

Good stuff

3 year bump

A newer (clean vocal) Opeth song that you recently linked in another thread. I really like their 2024 album, they are still excellent after all these years.
If you didn't see my work in the album ranking thread - I went so far as saying that it's my favorite of theirs and put it at #1 overall on my list. A concept album that is very atmospheric and sounds fantastic in the headphones. I also love the new drummer, he brought a slightly new sound to the table like the other two before them did. In an interview they joked that he was their Vitamin B shot since he is about 20 years younger than the rest and they knew he could play the more death metal stuff. Pretty sure they said to get the job he had to be able to play the Heritage stuff, mainly The Devil's Orchard since that is a concert staple for them.

Chapter 6 is one of my favorite songs of theirs overall. Everybody gets to cook on that one. When I was making a 31 playlist it had made it's way into the top 5 or 6, in a group with White Cluster, Hope Leaves, Reverie/Harlequin Forest, Hessian Peel, and Cusp of Eternity.

Any Between the Buried and Me fans? Been digging their stuff more and more. I am watching the episode on Drumeo with their drummer, and it is just bananas watching it get played.

@Dan Lambskin - you listen to Mastodon?

Not really. I saw their set at Sonic temple it was good and in that bands I should like category but just haven’t devoted a lot of time to them

I’ll take a recommended album
My favorites are Blood Mountain and Emperor of Sand. Leviathan and Crack the Skye very close behind. I grade all 4 as perfect metal albums.

They are 2nd behind Opeth for me as far newish bands i listen to and love the most.
