Got a free pass for a 7:30 pre-screening last night. Said on the pass to show up early because the free passes were given out like crazy to ensure a full house and it would be first come first serve. Showed up just before 5pm and there were already ~150 people lined up. About another 200 showed up after me as the start of the movie approached. Throughout the wait, several people on a VIP/press list showed up and got seated immediately. In between bringing in those folks, the ushers would take about 30-40 at a time from our line into the theater. As 7pm approached, they started taking in about 10 at a time every few minutes as seats were running out and they didn't want to bring in too many. Finally around 7:15 the usher counts off the first 30 people remaining in line, ropes them off, and tells everybody else to go home as the theater is booked solid.

I was 35th in line by then :(

What a waste of time. Never doing that again.

Got my IMAX tix for 10pm tonight. Should have done that all along.

It sure was. I watched the whole thing. Guy did a really nice job.

And Gojira is the definitive Godzilla movie indeed. Night and day from the American version with Raymond Burr.

A local film guy was on a local talk show the other day and said this isn't the case. He said the dark serious vibe shown in the trailers was just genius marketing and that the film isn't like that at all. He said its not goofy or campy but if you like the old B movies, you'll like it because it stays true to it for the most part.He also said that Cranston's role isn't very big (another good marketing move by showing him a lot in the trailers), and that the other monsters have more screen time than Godzilla.

As far as seeing Godzilla on screen, he described it as a "slow burn", meaning its not until halfway through the movie before he gets decent screen time.

Looking forward to this. Seems like they are trying to make this into a serious movie. But come on, its Godzilla.

It was interesting interview with Edwards where he said the very first Godzilla movie out of Japan was a serious flick and not the campy movies everyone knows and loves. And he wanted to get back to that. The original was technically about Hiroshima and Nagasaki nuclear attacks, but because the filmmakers we're not allowed to tell the true nuclear bomb stories, they came up with Japanese cities being destroyed by Godzilla and the radiation aftermath.

The original Japanese version, "Gojira", is a strong allegory to the nuclear attacks in WWII as well as a Japanese fishing boat doused with radiation from an atomic test in the Pacific in the early 1950s. When the movie was recut for American audiences (with Raymond Burr) and retitled, "Godzilla, King of the Monsters", a lot of that was removed or softened. A few years back "Gojira" was released on DVD in the USA with English subtitles. If you want to see what Edwards is trying to revisit with his remake, go rent that. It is a lot darker than the Americanized Burr version.

I have that version; I actually like it better.

BTW I did read that you don't see much of the Big G until it gets going. Supposedly this is because the director liked the way Spielberg handled the T-Rex.

Some of the last ones Toho made were fairly serious. I liked them.

Yeah its not stopping me from seeing it, he said its a good and entertaining popcorn flick, he gave it 3 out of 4 stars and said it was very well done.

Saw it last night. I agree with the review: Not as dark as the trailers make it out to be, but a serious take nonetheless. Not campy. I'm positive Godzilla fans will like it and as a general popcorn action/sci-fi pic it's pretty good in general.

A few days ago, I picked up the graphic novel "Godzilla: Awakening" which gives a lot of backstory leading up to the events in the movie (part of which was covered in the movie's intro prior to the title card). I think if Legendary incorporated the content of this book in the movie, the movie would have been much better.

I think the movie's PG-13 rating leans more towards PG than R. I'd take my 9yr and 6yr old girls to it, or at least show it to them on Blu-Ray.

Loved the shoutouts and homages to the Toho franchise:

- "In 1954, we awakened something"...the year Gojira hit the theaters in Japan.

- "Dr. Serizawa" was both the name of the head of Monarch in this movie...and the inventor of the oxygen destroyer in the original Gojira.

- Dr. Serizawa referring to the alpha predator as Gojira, then the admiral mispronouncing it as Godzilla...mirroring how Gojira got turned into Godzilla for the US release.

- The graphic on TV at the end "King of the Monsters saves city" or something along those lines...mirroring the title "Godzilla, King of the Monsters" of the US release of Gojira.

Those were the ones that jumped out at me. I'm sure there were some I missed.

If your 5yr old is good with non-gratuitous violence, but violence nonetheless, I think you'll be okay. That being said, if the rating is PG-13 I automatically screen the movie without the kids and then decide if they can handle it before taking them or renting it on disc. While I trust the reviews from family, friends and FBGs, there's always a scene or two that perhaps seemed minor to them that goes unmentioned and then surprises me and my kids.

I guess I am the first one that did not like it. Someone mentioned how great the music was when Godzilla first breathed his radioactive breath. I felt just the opposite. The soundtrack in this movie was horrendous in my opinion. It was so "hey something big is gonna happen" that I found it very annoying.

The whole Cranston thing really bothered me. I wont say what as I dont want to be spoiler guy but those that have seen it know what I mean.

Not enough Godzilla in this Godzilla movie. Story was bleh and I did not care about any of the characters. Really did not care who lived or died. I expect this movie will do well this week end but I will be surprised if it has any longevity. I think word of mouth will sentence this movie to an early exit from the theaters.

Liked it, didn't love it. Saw it on IMAX 3D and agree with the sentiment that 3D lent nothing to the movie. Would have loved to have seen more battle scenes with Godzilla. Seemed like everytime something good was going to happen between the monsters, they cut away to a totally irrelevant scene between humans that I didn't care about.

It was good. The build up....was like a typical Godzilla movie....loooooong.

But the pay off was spectacular. My only complaint was the payoff was too short. The story was well done, but the pacing was too slow overall. The effects and battles were incredible, and easily the best looking Godzilla movie ever made. Not that it had much competition in the realm of Godzilla movies. But as far as creature features....this was pretty epic.

Movie itself was lame, monster battle scenes were very cool. Unfortunately that occurred in roughly 10 minutes of a 2 hour plus movie.

I love that they make a Godzilla movie and limit the only reason people are there to a cameo. If I want to see a bunch of white people talking I'll watch the food network.

Beats me. Godzilla should be nominated for best supporting actor.

I think the movie's PG-13 rating leans more towards PG than R. I'd take my 9yr and 6yr old girls to it, or at least show it to them on Blu-Ray.

They tried to make it a serious movie with a real story plot, but it was not pieced together all that well. I did not really understand the motivation of Godzilla. Supposedly the Mutos are his prey, but it is not like he eats them, so why does Godzilla really care about chasing them down and killing them? Godzilla itself was awesome as were the special effects and fight scenes. The original Japanese Godzilla movie is still the best as far as story and characters go. This was good, but it leaves you scratching your head about several things.

One thing that I noticed was the scale of Godzilla next to an Aircraft Carrier. Our Carriers are about 1100 feet long, while Godzilla supposedly in this movie stands about 350 feet tall. In the scenes with Godzilla next to the Carrier, it seems like Godzilla is bigger than the carrier. So they had the scale off, but I assume they just wanted to make Godzilla appear more massive and powerful.
