***OFFICIAL Godzilla THREAD*** (2 Viewers)

Ugh. Looks like I won't be watching this one. Another case of a great trailer not indicative of what happens in the movie.

They tried to make it a serious movie with a real story plot, but it was not pieced together all that well. I did not really understand the motivation of Godzilla. Supposedly the Mutos are his prey, but it is not like he eats them, so why does Godzilla really care about chasing them down and killing them? Godzilla itself was awesome as were the special effects and fight scenes. The original Japanese Godzilla movie is still the best as far as story and characters go. This was good, but it leaves you scratching your head about several things.

One thing that I noticed was the scale of Godzilla next to an Aircraft Carrier. Our Carriers are about 1100 feet long, while Godzilla supposedly in this movie stands about 350 feet tall. In the scenes with Godzilla next to the Carrier, it seems like Godzilla is bigger than the carrier. So they had the scale off, but I assume they just wanted to make Godzilla appear more massive and powerful.
I read a review at Forbes.com and it nailed it IMO: Picked the wrong protagonist. Director Gareth Edwards has said he holds Speilberg in high regard and the decision to delay showing the title beast was right out of Jaws. He (and the writers) should have their plot follow closer to Speilberg's Close Encounters of the Third Kind with Cranston playing Richard Dreyfuss' character and Ken Watanabe playing the French UFO expert. Cranston could have owned this movie with a better story and Watanabe's character had so much potential to provide more depth to the history between Godzilla and the other creatures (could have had some good flashbacks).

The scale of Godzilla was off in other areas, too. The GG Bridge clears the water's surface at over 200 feet, but below the surface the depths are at least the same. If it was standing on the ocean floor as it approached the bridge, Godzilla would not have even reached the road span. Made for a good scene, though.

It was weird that they chose San Francisco for a fight scene, since that was a fight scene in Pacific Rim. Both Trespasser and Godzilla have now been shown chewing up the Golden Gate Bridge.

Honestly the battle scenes in Pacific Rim were 1000x better than this film. Gotta give the nod to Pacific Rim here.

I can't believe they would ruin the realism of the movie like that!!

Based on Dr Serizawa, best I could conclude is he's a prehistoric Anakin Skywalker.

I agree Cranston and Watanabe's characters were wasted. You got these great actors let them do something. I was also scratching my head about why Godzilla bothered if he wasn't going to eat them. And why did the MUTOs develop an EMP attack if it wasn't to use on predators like say Godzilla? I liked the movie and it was better than the last one. Monster wise this was Godzilla. But they really dropped the ball in a lot of areas.

The two Mutos mating and having babies would have thrown Nature off balance, Godzilla's "job" was to keep Nature in balance and thus woke up from his nap... :At least that was what they said when Godzilla first appeared.

My dad, daughter and I saw this Saturday and we all enjoyed it quite a bit.

Great  flick which I won't hesitate to buy once it is released on DVD.

OK, that makes a little bit of sense. Pretty smart monster. Thanks.

No it really doesn't. Their very existence threatened the balance of nature? How? Nature don't give a crap about EMP. They only eat radiation. They weren't going to destroy crops or herds. Not on purpose anyway. Even people were safe except for the stepping on them thing if they left them alone. So how was that going to work? And in what creature do we ever see it evolve to attack but not eat anything to defend the planet? Not the way it works. Those things were full of radiation. Those were perfect Godzilla snacks. Sorry that doesn't really answer the question.

I liked the movie, too. As a huge Godzilla fan I was hoping to love it and for that I'm disappointed. When I found out Legendary was doing it, I perhaps set my expectations higher than most.

Yeah that's where I was. I wanted to be blown away and the trailers led me to believe I was going to be. But it didn't quite get there.

Here is how I took it.. and it is probably worth less then :2cents: ;)

If the Motos had as many babies as they were ready to be delivered, the Motos would "Rule the earth" and start destroying the human population as they took over and destroyed Nuclear power plants and anything that used Nuclear power. They may not eat humans, but they certainly would destroy everywhere humans live as they looked for food and thus eliminating them from Earth.

Godzilla's "job" is to keep Nature, ala all living things on earth, in balance.. thus he needed to remove the threat of the Motos taking over earth.

In theory, Godzilla is protecting his existance since if there were hundreds of these things, they would probably kill him. But I guess you have to look at Godzilla as more of a metaphore for nature fighting against the pollution of man. He is kind of a hate the sin, love the sinner type of dude.

From the trailer's this looked dark, tense, and serious and that piqued my interest. From reading comments here it does not seem to be the case, so I probly wont see it.

Or they would provide food. Really I guess it's silly to worry about but you can have a decent basis in reality, work with those rules, and still have a great monster flick.

Earth don't care about humans is the problem. We are on the ultimate unbalancer.

OK, take Humans out of the equation..

Motos mating and having babies would eliminate any possibility of balance in nature and thus Godzilla was woken to keep that from happening.

In the end it was about keeping Motos from mating and populating the earth with thousands of other Motos.

Just glad Godzilla still lives so there is a chance of a Godzilla vs. Mothra rematch!!

They can only have as many as there is radiation. There are only so many sources of radiation. They obviously existed in some number at some point. Look I get making Godzilla the avatar for one thing or another but it was handled very poorly.

Agreed. Other than his "Let them Fight" line, Watanabe was useless. He was bordering on Raymond Burr territory.

Serious? Yes.

Dark? No.

Tense? A bit, but not much.
A more serious Pacific Rim, Ill probly wait for DVD.

The thing is you really should see him on the big screen at least once. Yeah the movie had holes but my whole reason for going was to get a full sense of Godzilla at full size and volume.

Yeah, it was by far the best big screen Godzilla as far as the monster itself goes. Obvious spoiler alert......The scene where he destroys the second Mutos is awesome. Could have used about twice as much fighting scenes. I think it was good to build up to the full reveal like the original.

I guess I am the first one that did not like it. Someone mentioned how great the music was when Godzilla first breathed his radioactive breath. I felt just the opposite. The soundtrack in this movie was horrendous in my opinion. It was so "hey something big is gonna happen" that I found it very annoying.

The whole Cranston thing really bothered me. I wont say what as I dont want to be spoiler guy but those that have seen it know what I mean.

Not enough Godzilla in this Godzilla movie. Story was bleh and I did not care about any of the characters. Really did not care who lived or died. I expect this movie will do well this week end but I will be surprised if it has any longevity. I think word of mouth will sentence this movie to an early exit from the theaters.
Totally agree. I was pretty bored throughout and really didn't care about any characters. No way I would see this again.

I HATED this movie.

It's one thing to make a bad movie it's another to bludgeon me with it for two hours. This is the most obnoxiously LOUD movie I've ever seen.

The fight scenes are ripped off from King Kong and the Jurassic Park finale.

They made Wantanabe look like an idiot walking around wide eyed, open mouthed, and slow talking every line.

Having soldier guy have a family he just has to get back to BUT HE'S THE ONLY ONE THAT CAN COMPLETE THE MISSION DAMMIT is barf inducingly contrived.

It was actually going okay until Cranston exited but then it fell completely over the cliff.

This was a worse experience than the last Die Hard movie and Olympus Has Fallen.

tell us how you REALLY feel :P

Same crap, different title. Always a useless den of monster eggs, always characters with no real purpose but to meander and watch monsters fight. Thought it was going to be a lot different. Trailer was tight and tense. Cranston could have owned this movie if it had a better story. I'm surprised he gave the effort he did, must have been in the middle of breaking bad finale or just after while filming. As he went so did the movie. They need to STOP using the US military as the lead characters because they mess that up and they need to STOP using nuclear radiation and bombs because they clearly don't know how that works either. Same story with Pacific Rimjob. I'm done with this CGI porn. I'm going to see some indie films to wash myself of this crap I keep watching. Probably last monster, robot, towering anomaly movie I ever see.

There have been what, about 30 Godzilla movies? How original can you be? Oh, absolutely they could have done a better job with the human part of the story. But it is a movie about huge monsters fighting and crushing cities.

Yeah this isn't Tolstoy. With that said I understand the disappointment. They got the monster right they got an awful lot else wrong. I was so let down by how they totally wasted Cranston and Wantanabe. You have these great character actors. Readily thought of as two of the best in the business and this is what you give them to do? Come on. I went to the theater to see this mainly because I wanted to see the big guy on the big screen. But I was led to believe I was going to get an actual film not just huge monsters fighting.

David Strathairn is another actor that's usually pretty solid.

I thought to myself as I was watching the movie, "I can tell that these actors are taking this seriously. I wonder what they thought when they saw the finished product. Probably something like 'THIS isn't what I signed up for'."

Absolutely.

I liked it.. Will be buying the blu ray

Glad they made Godzilla the hero

Big improvement from 98 version

Decent in 3d, biut not necessary

Great last 30 mins

My wife and I just saw it. My favorite part is when Godzilla and fake mothra FINALLY begin to fight and the door closes and we go back to more soldier stuff. At least 5 people in the theatre audibly groaned.

YES MORE SOLDIER STUFF PLEASE WE NEVER GET TO SEE MANY MOVIES WITH US SOLDIERS SHOOTING AND JUMPING OUT OF ####.

I thought the scenes with Godzilla were great but this movie sucked the big one. Really let down.

Come on people, It is GODZILLA,.

It is a good summer popcorn flix. It has big monsters destroying multiple cities and each other. Quit looking for subtle meanings and metaphors and just turn your mind off for two hours. Like my 9 year old daughter would go from laughing and then would grab my arm in a few spots.

It wasn't a 5 out of 5 movie. Give it 4 out of 5. Great summer movie. Can't wait to own on Blu-Ray and will gladly plop down my $$ for part two.

Frankly life is stressful and sometimes hard--mindless is good once in a while,

The fact that it's not what you described here is what has people upset.

I respect you didn't like it and it would be boring if we all liked the same things.

So they only destroyed 5 cities and not 7. Godzilla was only on the screen 18 minutes not 25. I mean in most action movies, the critics complain the actors aren't developed and only serve as filler between action scenes. This movie has some dialogue and I admit the beginning pre-monster scenes could have been a little shorter. I didn't care for Bryan Cranston character at all. But I thought the idea of limiting Godzilla's screen early on was perfect. As others have said, it had a Jawsesque feel to it.

Oh well, I guess I am easy to please.

I guess my other complaint was, if you're going to have 2.5 hours of people standing around yapping, and you have Bryan Cranston in your movie.....why not give those scenes to Bryan Cranston?

But whatever. I'll probably by the blu Ray for the last half hour.

That is what I wanted but did not get. Sure there was some fighting and city destroying but the ratio to crap was way off. I do not feel this was a good summer popcorn movie.
