I remembered when Ben and Skin first appeared at the Ticket; two kind of goofy guys with shared backgrounds and affinity for hoops. They were cool dudes. They were very polite, very helpful, always there at events and promoted station with pride. We liked them. And by ‘we’ I mean the weekday hosts who basically decided who were in and who were out. The thumbs of approval were almost unanimous. Rhyner never gave a thumbs up, he hated everybody (I love that dude!). And I thought that they were pretty good. Needed much work and experience, but worth keeping around. After a few years toiling on weekends they soon seemed to become restless about making this talk radio thing a full-time gig (both had other career jobs and radio was just a part-time job on weekend). No big deal. Weekend guys come and go. Most like the GREAT Mark Elfenbein, were content on this arrangement cuz they were making a gazillion dollars a year in other endeavors. But B&S were different. They had ambition. They had desire. And they knew how to work a room. GAWD-ALMIGHTY could they work a room and the politics of glad-handing. They had a plot they wanted to chart and they weren’t about to let anyone trouble that, especially a bunch of long timers running the clubhouse at The Ticket.
Now with The Ticket being the bad-### in the biz and no one there seemingly moving along, B&S started to tirelessly work the press boxes of the AAC and Ballpark. Just putting their name out there, and letting anyone that would listen that they were players. They were better than a weekend show, and a sense of entitlement creeped in on those young men. They soon started to become ‘pals’ with several players. And this soon morphed into thinking they were friends with those guys. And it was there that it started.
B&S were labeled “Friend of the Athlete”. There are few worse hallmarks a press guy can get than “friend of the Athlete”. But at the time, it all seems so right. In my early years, Randy Galloway told me to never venture into those waters. “It never works out” he loudly told me time and time again. And I would be burned on it a few times till I pulled my head out of my ###. It’s a one way street. The odds are never in your favor. They use you but no way in hell they’ll allow you to use them. But B&S proudly touted the roster of players that they “knew”. And as soon as social media took off, there were galleries and galleries of pictures with B&S and “their boys”. It soon became comical and embarrassing. And it was around this time that they landed a fulltime gig at Live 105.3. They worked afternoons.
This was before 105.3 switched to all sports.
They had a platform to display their goofy bits, sensational NBA knowledge (Skin knows more about the NBA than ANY media guy in this town) and an impressive Rolodex of players both former and present. I thought their show was good. They worked hard at it and it showed. But they were still getting their heads bashed in by Bob and Dan. But in the blink of an eye, the Einstein’s of CBS decided they’d join the all-sports ranks by switching formats. B&S would move to afternoon drive and have the pleasure of being annihilated by the HardLine, which happened. Not even the endless promotion of star-studded guests would prevent that massacre. And up until this point, in two different time slots, they never generated ratings. So after a few months, yet another PD change would spell the end for B&S. So now you had a ratings loser in two-time slots. So naturally, ESPN couldn’t wait to give them a gig.
They were falling all over themselves to get them signed. And they did. They would now occupy the mid-days. But the stone cold truth about these ‘great guys’ was the internal politicking they had done. I have it one 100% authority that B&S were stealthily inserting the knife in the back of RJ Choppy. And they would further that practice as they orchestrated the ouster of Michael Irvin and Kevin Kiley. Now it’s getting serious. These guys weren’t ****ing around; they were going for the knees of the Playmaker. And it was to the wonderment of the industry. They were never a ratings generator, but they claimed they were a money-maker. In radio it usually doesn’t work that way. But somehow in their back channel meandering and under the table dealing, once again they’d come sevens all the way. One funny aside…after B&S performed a season long sucking session on CJ Wilson, and begging and pleading that he would call when he chose his new designation. The Ticket broke that news. Yep, B&S, friend of the athlete, pal through and through, forgot to tip-off his ‘buddies’ when he signed his giant deal. That had to hurt. Or at least move him down in the rotation of B&S parade of friend of the athlete.
Times in the old Dallas sports talk wars had settled into a symphonic snore. Not much going on. But suddenly the plates shifted. Bruce Gilbert tendered his resignation at the Fan. That wasn’t good. Although the ratings hadn’t shown it, he was the BEST PD in the country and there is NOBODY better. It soon became apparent to me that if Bruce couldn’t turn the Fan around, no one could. That worried me. If he is leaving, that means someone else is coming. And I had zero confidence that CBS could make the right hire. I was right. After much stage posturing and fake enthusiasm, they decided on Spittle, Gavin. That sealed my doom. I was a short-timer. It was just a matter of time. I had heard that he made a comment that “he just didn’t get me”, “didn’t understand my motives” and “Didn’t know if I was equipped to man the important afternoon drive slot”.
Yea, that ******* didn’t know how to read 14 years of absolute domination in a top four market.
Guess I wasn’t ready for the big time radio of western Orchard Park or the tough town of Houston. So I saw the writing on the wall, but it was another news item that caught my eye. It seems that ESPN and Ben & Skin were parting ways. They couldn’t agree on a contract, so B&S were walking. Just like that. Walking out on a gig without another one lined up.
Yeah ****ing right!
Who believes that ****?
I did what most guys with 27 years of spies, espionage and equally estranged muckraking tactics. I got on the phone. It didn’t take long. B&S had been is secret meeting with Spittle, Gavin since February. They were assured a job as soon as their non-compete expired. So not only were these *******s negotiating for a job that wasn’t open, they were violating their own contract at the time. Swell fellows. If you ever find yourselves in a game of monopoly with these dudes, keep an eye on the bank.
