I don't know if we've ever had anything like this here before.  I'd search, but the search function here and all.....

Some of the talk in the 401K thread got me thinking about this.  I figured we could use this to post any items or tricks or things to save money on common things would be helpful.  So, here's a couple I've got to start:

1)  For those of you that need a landline and are still paying for one, get one of these here.  Sign up for a Google Voice number for free, set it up with this adapter, then you have a landline for free.  No more fees.  The only thing it doesn't have is 911 capability but otherwise it's a one time cost and done.  We went without a landline for years but with kids we decided it would be better to have something at home and this has been perfect for the last 5 years.

2)  If you have Sprint for your cell phone service, you can get either of the following each year.  It's not published or easily found, but here you go:

-- Free annual AAA membership for every line

or

-- $50 Credit Union deposit for each line every year

Churn credit cards to get free vacations or huge cash-back bonuses.

Doctor of Credit

ETA - I just got back from a two week trip to Italy in which the airfare and hotels were free.

Choose a spouse that is cool with working and not having kids.  Avoid expensive dogs that incur expensive emergency vet bills.

For those that want more, the book "Your money or your life" was huge for us when it came to reaching financial independence. I still have the original paperback version and a digital copy of the updated version. It was FIRE before FIRE. It talks about all the things you spend money on and their true costs towards being happy.

Cook, don’t eat out
Make a menu. There was a period of time where I made menu that was 2, or even 4 weeks at a time. We would go to the store once a month to get most of what we needed, then once week to get the fresh produce. You don't realize how many impulsive buys you make going to the grocery store 6-8 times a month. I could also plan to utilize leftovers to save money. IE cook a whole chicken for dinner one night and use the leftover to boil down and make chicken noodle soup for another dinner.

Hop on over to slickdeals if there's something you plan on purchasing.  You can usually find a great deal on that item.  I've saved several thousand dollars over the years by checking out that site before purchasing bigger ticket items.
