1989 thru 1997

19 thru age 27.

Single, playing in a rock band.....literally I had zero worries. I worked several different jobs to pay my rent....and rock n rolled.

At 28 I got engaged after living with my now wife (of going on 26 years in October) for a year to make sure she was not a lunatic and compatible (obviously it's worked out) and got a "real job" in the world of finance/investments and banking. I finally gave up on my dream of being a rock star......and used my investment and great people skills to actually make a decent wage. And here we are in 2025.

But I am going to be really honest...other than the occasional family BS we all deal with and my wife going thru some very difficult family illness and losing her mother and sister already........our lives are been quite unstressful.

I don't allow toxic people and energy vampires into my tight circle of trust. And we are all for the better living that way.

Last August I canoed the Bowron Lake circuit for 7 days. There were 14 of us and my partner was my 21 year old daughter. First time I've been detached from society (completely). The world could have been ending, and we wouldn't have known. It was so refreshing.

Of course, when I got back to our vehicle I had 1200 emails to go through, but it was worth it! I would recommend this to everyone that is chained to a laptop or phone.
I love this!

A couple places we set up camp for fly fishing trips, there is no cell.....I prefer it that way. It's good to unplug from society.

My favorite author, John Gierach said.... paraphrasing here, "when someone asks me how can I get ahold of you on the river?"..... "You can't. That's sort of the point."

I'd like to pick your brain on some camping ideas for Eastern Oregon. It's one area we haven't really explored much and I know there's a ton out there - I used to cover La Grande when I was working for CASE and loved the drive up and over to get there, but was young and dumb and never explored the area much.
EO is pretty awesome. Lots of variety. Shoot me a pm, and we can chat about places.

Mad? I'm jealous!! Fishing with Gierach....I can't even imagine! How did that happen? Although, dude was so understated.....just a regular dude, with a quick wit. No frills, or ego. That's what I'll loved about him

Can you think of a more interesting FBG than SWC to profile? I can't. Wikkid maybe if he were still around.

I’m sure there are others more recent, but did a golf trip to Bandon Dunes a couple summers back. July on Oregon coast can be a very nice time of year.

Day three played Bandon Trails and birdied 18. We then played the par 3 short course. Won some money, lost some money. Hitting wedges with the ocean in the background. Then had a late lunch and hit the big putting green there, Punch Bowl.

The temperature and humidity was the perfect spot where you can’t feel the air. You aren’t hot or cold. The sun was starting to make the clouds change all kinds of colors and those types of trees (pines of some sort that can stand up to anything) that grow next to the ocean in this climate were casting shadows and catching light in all kinds of ways. I still distinctly remembering looking around and thinking this how I want to feel all the time. I know you can’t because then it wouldn’t be so special but still I rarely take time to think this.

A great, great day.

I recently told my son there's no feeling in life like the careless calm you feel walking out of your last final exam at the end of a semester in college. I've never gotten back to that point in my life. Even the few times I've had a couple weeks between jobs with no deadlines or work pressure is not comparable.

That's excellent. Wonder if that's what I'll feel like if/when I ever retire.
Damn that was a great time because end of semester’s typically were followed by weeks or months off where we just got simple jobs to bank some money but never stressful.

I will say that getting to retirement is stressful. 3 boys, 6 more years of college payments and a bit of a spendy wife (who works hard too) is not easy. Planning on selling this house next early spring so if we can still get what we should, that will alleviate some serious stress. I’m actually looking forward to living in an apartment for a year while we build the we will retire there lake house. The interest on the equity will cover our monthly costs when we don’t have a house and we should be able to save a nice amount. Weird to have that as a thing to look forward to but paying two sets of property taxes and HOA/social membership fees while paying for two kids in college is not fun especially since a lot At the lake has the same property tax value as when it is actually our primary residence. It will be doubly refreshing when college costs are gone and we are only paying for one house (or god forbid not have a mortgage!).

I have to say, during today’s bike ride, I felt completely stress free. Just a good 4 hours on the Arsenal with no traffic, mostly by myself and a beautiful day.
Trail hiking yesterday with son 4 was another. Those and SUP / kayaking are perfect imo.

No doubt there are other activities that work for others. Combine fun and being outside, relaxing.

I get there skiing. It’s glorious.

Snow Skiing is about as close as i get.. maybe lake boating or sitting at the beach also. But owning a business means at some point someone is going to call me with this problem or that problem and at least sap some of my mental freedom.

This time of year, my mental break is birding — checking out migratory birds and warblers coming through the area. There is a small park that is a five minute drive from me that all of the warblers (but not very many people) know about. Maybe not completely stress-free, but I find it restorative as just peace and quiet except the sounds of birds.

I bring along my DSLR with me to snap photos. Here’s a chestnut-sided warbler pic I took yesterday, for any warbler fans.

This is awesome!

Recently downloaded the Merlin ID app and have received so much joy identifying bird sounds and playing bird songs back to them over the Bluetooth speaker when they hop around my backyard.
