Official monkeypox discussion thread (1 Viewer)

Monkey pox isn’t likely to be the next pandemic, but it’s a little concerning when some people’s first impulse is to dismiss the potential for unfamiliar viruses to do bad stuff.

If you’ve been paying attention, you know novel infections have been a far more frequent occurrence the last couple decades. Is 2019 such a distant memory?

I am old enough to remember people joking about COVID (then Corona Virus) when we first heard about it.  Not so funny now, is it?

Monkeypox will probably turn out to be nothing, but I think it is inappropriate to make light of it (or any virus).

Oh I believe it will be horrible and I want my stimulus NOW

Who made light?

What are stimulus checks?  Are those the checks that weren't sent out to people where Donald Trump made sure to sign his name on them so everyone knew who they were coming from?

I don't think that dude has that kind of power anymore.  Maybe if he wins in 2024 he'll send you some more free money.

Didn't that guy who was POTUS say COVID was just going to disappear? He obviously wasn't taking it that seriously.

And I didn't say people were joking in this forum, but I saw a lot of that on Twitter, in the early days. people pointing out that the number of deaths at that time were less than what we normally got for the flu each year, so essentially there was nothing to see here, or it is much ado about nothing.

Since imitation is the sincerest form of flattery then obviously Biden is deeply in love with Mr. Trump when it comes to stimulus checks.

I thought COVID would be a joke and overblown when I first heard about it, but I knew better than to not take it seriously. I seriously did the elbow rub with the woman who cut my hair before a case had even been reported here.

Surreal that we'd kid about a virus now with all we know and all we've gone through with COVID.

I think it’s fatigue from the news channels about the viruses.

I said on Twitter in the early days of what was then CORONA, that these viruses all start out about the same with just a few cases and most of them never become a serious public health concern.

However, some do and before you know it, thousands can be sick and dying (AIDS being the best example before COVID and it was dismissed by many folks initially because it appeared to be limited to the gay community).

Difference there is AIDS has been around since the 1930s, but never spread until the right vector appeared.  COVID went from lab to worldwide pandemic is months.

Next you're going to tell me they were studying this in Wuhan.

Ah, a reflection on the character of those you choose to follow on twitter.  No one here cares

Yep. The Biden admin is overseeing a $1.5 trillion decline in the deficit this year now that the cut taxes and spend GOP is out of power.

Ah, more posts about your world inside twitter and nothing to do with this forum or the OP.

Hint:  You will find anything and everything on twitter.  Saying someone made a joke about __________ on twitter is completely irrelevant to any discussion going on.

Monkeypox is not a novel infection.

Same thing is happening with monkeypox.

Not true. Like anyone else, if I am commenting on a something discussed in a thread it has to do with this forum and the OP (unless I am responding to an unrelated digression someone made).

How your twitter feed responds to a similar topic is completely irrelevant to the OP.  Nobody cares.

I was making an analogy about how social media reacted in the early days of the COVID pandemic, I believe that is relevant to the OP and is allowed here.

Sounds like you should go Google monkeypox before jumping to conclusions.
