Awesome, do me a favor and post what you think of k-Paul's after you go or shoot me a pm? I'll check out palace. Thanks!Tipsy? I hope he sees this as I want to get this right. We have no other set plans (on purpose) except the cocktail tour on Saturday so I want to get this meal right.
i'll definitely post a report
We went last night. It was good, but not great. Now take that with a grain of salt b/c I live here and am pretty damn critical of restaurants b/c there are basically very few bad (non-chain) restaurants here.Atmosphere - nice, but not upscale. I didn't see anyone with shorts on b/c it was cold, so I'm not sure if that would fly for dinner or not.Service - our waiter was kind of a ####, but he was quick and came back often to check on us, so I let it slide. Breads - they brought out a nice selection of fresh baked breads (jalepeno chedder, some pecan bread, cornbread, and fresh white bread)Appetizer - we split the fried green tomatoes - awesome!Entrees - I had the blackened drum with crabmeat on top and Mrs. TF had the paneed veal with a shrimp sauce on top. As I mentioned above, they were both good, but not great. We were too full for dessert, as the food was very heavy. If it were up to me, I would tell your group to go to Palace over K-Pauls...but I think K-Pauls would be ok (just need to check on the shorts thing)

So an update, I was the one wondering where to eat for our large group.

We wound up sticking with K-Paul's and were glad we did. Our group of ten late 30s-late 40's live in vegas and I would say we are sophisticated about food and service quality. There was no dish anyone disliked and everything we had was either good or great. Service was good but a little slow, but not too surprising with a large party. Prices were way cheaper than an equivalent meal in Vegas. I think we spent about $150/couple including tip and we had drinks/wine/appetizers/a few desserts. I would say in Vegas our bill would have been more like $200-225 per couple.

My only quibble was that the beer selection was really weak and I wasn't too impressed with the cocktail menu, although they seemed to have a large wine list (i can't speak to price/quality though, I don't drink much wine).

Most of us stayed at the Omni Royal and I can also recommend it as a base of operations for the French Quarter. I had read on tripadvisor that the smallest rooms are REALLY small so we booked a larger room for a few bucks more so make sure you look into that issue if anyone stays there. There are two omnis so if you want the FQ one gotta make sure you pick the right one. It is nowhere near the quality of vegas hotels but I have been to NO 5 times so I realize the cities aren't really directly comparable in that area.

Another highlight was that we did the afternoon cocktail tour done by Greyline Tours, it is actually the highest rated tour on tripadvisor and was very well done. We paid a group rate and they wound up giving us a private tour for just us ten which was very nice of them, considering if I had actually booked it as a private tour it would have been twice the price.

Thanks for the advice people gave, it was very helpful and we had a great time!

Buddies and I are coming to New Orleans for a weekend in mid-August for our 20th fantasy football draft. We've got rooms at the Royal Sonesta and are knowledgeable enough about restaurants, but I could really use help on one thing. Any locals have a good suggestion on where we could physically have our draft, preferably in or near the FQ? This is going to be during the 1st half of the day on Saturday, 8/18, so I can't imagine places will be terribly crowded. There will be around 10 of us, and since everybody won't be making the trip, we'll need someplace with access to power outlets for laptops and ideally wifi (although tethering is a backup option, I suppose). Any ideas on an accommodating restaurant/bar/etc.?

The Sonesta has meeting rooms. Just book one of them, and get your own beer and food.

This was going to be my first suggestion. If this would cost you money, look into booking one of the corner suites at the Sonesta instead of your regular hotel room. That should be plenty of room for the draft and they have bars in them.Only other place I can think of is Walk Ons. It's in the CBD, so would be a 5 minute cab ride. I have no idea what they would charge, but I would assume that there's not too much going on that day, so they might be flexible. They've got a good beer selection and pretty good food.

Had another thought last night...World of Wings, is like a local version of BWW. They have a location in the Doubletree (right next to the casino). I've never been there, so not sure if they have a private room or not; but it's just a thought...might want to give them a call

My family swung through New Orleans for a day on the way to the beach last week. Made a return trip to the Blue Plate Cafe (lower Garden District on Prytania) and had a terrific breakfast.

Tales of Cocktail is this week in NOLA. If you don't know, now you know. Be very afraid.
Yay! Looking forward to all those bozos telling me how to do my job and giving me ideas on how to make the bar I don't own more successful.
i just go to the private parties...the one hosted by Employees Only is always gold
We're hosting a private party on Friday and I'm actually looking forward to it because they'll be bringing their own mixologist.

Guys,

we need to take out a customer tonight, but they are a vegetarian. It doesnt need to be a vegetarian spot. It just needs to have some vegetarian options. I know this limits us. Any recommendations? The closer to the hyatt by the superdome the better.

What you got?

What about the restaurant at the bottom of the hyatt (name is escaping me now). I would imagine that all nice restaurants here have a vegetarian option or two? Not too much else really close to the hyatt. Herbsaint (5 minute cab right) seems like they'd have some decent veggie options

Green Goddess in Exchange Alley. Not a vegetarian place, but they do have lotsa options.

Thanks yall. We settled on Green Goddess. Menu looks pretty decent.

Went to Commanders Palace for the first time last night which was pretty cool. We had a special tasting menu which was really good. Also got a tour of the property. that Turtle soup is outstanding.

Forgot about this place. Good recommendation...Really like this place

Went to NOLA for a conference a couple of weeks ago:

Mulate's - catfish smothered in crawfish étouffée was great, bread pudding was amazing, great atmosphere with zydaco band and dancing.

Mother's - The Ralph was good, bread pudding was excellent. Amazing jambalaya.

Cafe Mapero - was hoping to hit central grocery for a muffalatta but couldn't so had one here....delicious!!

Cachon Butcher - excellent pastrami sliders....head cheese....yum

Cafe du Monde - obviously the beniets (sorry for spelling) are wonderful.

Drago's - chargrilled Oysters and shrimp and grits...one of the best meals I've had in years!

Some coworkers ate at Irene's and said it was good Italian.

Highlight of trip for me was the National World War II museum....didn't even know it was there....few blocks from my hotel....loved it!!!!

I love NOLA!

Anyone ever upgraded for a private balcony room at Bienville House?
Make sure you ask where the balcony faces. A lot of those botique hotels in the quarter have patios on the inside and the balconies face them....so they're not what you think. Plus, that location isn't exactly huge for a lot of foot traffic (compared to a balcony on bourbon st)...so if the price is a lot, I might be wary. Not trying to sway you one way or another, just sharing what I know.

They can't specify, but it's either a balcony on Decatur or on the inside courtyard. The inside ones look pretty nice, and have been called 'huge' online....so I think we'll be happy with either....for a modest upcharge.Alabama-LSU weekend....so nothing is cheap.

Thats the tough part (other than the commute). We're going with a party of 8...all couples....but looks like only 2 (husbands) of us are going to pursue the game. We have the ability to get thru work most of the time...but nothing guaranteed until late. We may also have some friends renting a 'limo' to make that drive...who may have extra seats....but not sure there either. We basically committed to NOLA Thurs-Sun night and will hope for the best on the game...if not, enjoy the FQ that night instead. Love that city....but haven't been to BR in 20 years either.

gotcha. I sold my season tickets (except for the bama game)...the only one I really needed to go to this year. Should be a great atmosphere in Baton Rouge that day.

That USCe game might be ok....How long is that commute would you say on a Game Day with a night game in BR? I'm sure we'll leave by noon or so on the way there....2 hours on the way back?

From your hotel to LSU with no traffic is about 90 minutes. Whatever you do make sure you park on the north side of campus for a quick exit that should get you back in 2 hours (or so). Hit me up the week before the game and I can give you the lowdown on where to park. I've also heard some rumors on bus charters for $50 there and back (including beer), but nothing set in stone yet.

Wow...

The wife and I will be there from Thursday to Sunday. Staying at the Hotel Monteleone, looks like a cool place. Any comments on that place?

Planning on hitting some of the restaurants touted here. Going to do a swamp boat tour (always wanted to ride one of those big fan boats)! Any other tourist-y things you guys would recommend?

Are there any events going on that we should check out?

We were just in NOLA last weekend for the Washington/LSU game. We had great meals at Cochon, the Pelican Club, brunch at the Court of Two Sisters and poboys at Crabby Jack's. We did the swamp tour as well. Also drove out to the river road and toured a couple of plantations--really interesting if you're at all interested in that history. While my buddy and I were in Baton Rouge for the game our wives did a voodoo tour that they loved (Bloody Mary's, I think). The tailgaiting at Tiger Stadium was fantastic (much better than the game for a UW fan, at least).

I hear the cocktail tours are good as well as the haunted/voodoo tours. I've never done them, but have heard they were good. No events I can think of other than the Saints game on SundayMonteleone is a solid hotel...great bar in there

Cocktail tour = walking around drinking booze? Right up my alley. Of course, the wife has already informed me that the babysitter is off duty. That can't be good for a blackout drunk in NO can it???Wish I could make the game, but leaving out Sunday late morning... Voodoo tours... What's that about?

I think I am coming down for Jazz Fest. Anybody have any good ideas for a place to stay? I will probably be around the 3rd-5th.
Depends on budget as prices get expensive and rooms get scarce. What do you want to be close to?
I am going with somebody who has never been before so we will probably want to be in/very near the quarter. Although I am open to staying elsewhere. I prefer uptown myself. I am not quite to the level of your average FBG, but I am still a FBG so not broke. There aren't a ton of rooms available. Anybody know of somebody who rents out their apartment?

I like to stay in the Warehouse area - it is close to Howlin Wolf, Republic, Masonic Temple, for good late night shows- Lafayette Park will have a show on Wednesday - it's a bit quieter and the restaurant scene is much better on that side IMO, getting to quarter isn't that bad of a walk it you want, walk to St. Charles and catching a streetcar to Maple Leaf or Tipitina's is simple. There are condos in the area that you might find for rent on VRBO. Last year it seemed the rooms were tough to find and then a bunch got "released" so there was a late price drop on Priceline - mainly the big places on Canal. Also I'd look for a rental over closer to Frenchmen - lots of shows late night over there http://www.jazzfestgrids.com/second_weekend/ - excellent late night shows during second weekend BTW.Here is a place that that has excellent Jazzfest info - including this page for Priceline bidding results http://jazzfest.swagland.com/bidding.html
