I think I am coming down for Jazz Fest. Anybody have any good ideas for a place to stay? I will probably be around the 3rd-5th.
Depends on budget as prices get expensive and rooms get scarce. What do you want to be close to?
I am going with somebody who has never been before so we will probably want to be in/very near the quarter. Although I am open to staying elsewhere. I prefer uptown myself. I am not quite to the level of your average FBG, but I am still a FBG so not broke. There aren't a ton of rooms available. Anybody know of somebody who rents out their apartment?
I like to stay in the Warehouse area - it is close to Howlin Wolf, Republic, Masonic Temple, for good late night shows- Lafayette Park will have a show on Wednesday - it's a bit quieter and the restaurant scene is much better on that side IMO, getting to quarter isn't that bad of a walk it you want, walk to St. Charles and catching a streetcar to Maple Leaf or Tipitina's is simple. There are condos in the area that you might find for rent on VRBO. Last year it seemed the rooms were tough to find and then a bunch got "released" so there was a late price drop on Priceline - mainly the big places on Canal. Also I'd look for a rental over closer to Frenchmen - lots of shows late night over there http://www.jazzfestg...second_weekend/ - excellent late night shows during second weekend BTW.Here is a place that that has excellent Jazzfest info - including this page for Priceline bidding results http://jazzfest.swag...om/bidding.html
Anybody ever done VRBO before? I might go this route.
I've done it for a sweet condo in Hawaii and it was fantastic - but not in New Orleans. BTW Marigny is the hood over by Frenchmen - Warehouse also is known as Convention Center in some descriptions - description of places tend to bleed in the neighborhood vs actual location.ETA - I've seen a lot of places on Craiglsist as well - but be careful there - I heard there was some scamming going on for the Super Bowl.

Going March 2-8 for a conference. Staying at the Astor Crown Plaza - no choice from the convention bureau. On the corner of Canal and Bourbon so close to the action. Client dinners already at Dickie Brennan's Steakhouse and Herbsaint. Hope to get some BBQ at Tipsey's as well if the doors are open or pit firin'. I have a free day on Thursday, so may go out to the Fairgrounds for some racing. It's going to be tough as I'm on a 90 day program to take off some lb's.

Sorry - I did not mean to imply it is the "hood" - but yet the neighborhood name to look for places to stay nearest to Frenchmen

I will be there for HIMSS as well, staying at JW Marriott. Always a crazy week, but New Orleans only promises to make it worse. I may not sleep.

All within walking distance: Palace Cafe, Bourbon House, Dickie Brennan's Steakhouse, Mr. Bs, Galatoie's (need a jacket/sport coat), Dominica, Luke

So im going to be in town for a Bachelor party during French Quarter fest. I dont know much about the event. How is it? Is the food setup similar to Jazzfest with tons of great vendors? Will we need to grab reservations for restaurants prior to coming? Any other tips regarding this event would be helpful.

The festival itself is 100% free and is a great time. Has grown in popularity a lot over the past few years.Similar to Jazz Fest, there are food vendors set up all over the Quarter. Definitely recommend restaurant reservations ASAP, especially with a large group (expect to eat later in the evening).Where are you staying?

Great location  You can walk to the quarter with no problem, and you're a longer walk or quick cab ride from the warehouse district or marigny.

location doesnt matter. im thinking one night it would be fun to get out of the FQ. A daytime and night time option would be helpful. not really clubby, but lounges, pubs, bars and the like would be ideal. Thanks.

Le Bon Temps Roule
After my wedding and reception at the Tea Room in Audubon Park, we made sure the buses bringing the guests back to their French Quarter hotel all stopped at Bon Temps and most wedding guests ended up straggling into the hotel around 5 am.

Great bar...sure to be hopping during FQF. Quintessential New Orleans bar IMO.Pink - this place is a cab ride uptown (probably 15 minutes from quarter) and will likely have a kick ### brass band on any of the nights you're there. Probably best to go around 11pm or so, but you'll get a solid new orleans experience there. If you want to do some other bars closer to there first, look at the following (all on Magazine Street...but all not necessarily w/in close walking distance from each other)Ms. Mae's - dive bar with cheap drinksBulldog - English style pub with tons of beers on draftsBalcony - "regular" bar with pool, good jukebox, etcSt. Joes - young professionals type bar

So is the food at the fest going to be worth doing on most days? we def plan on doing Cochon butcher for lunch one of the days(i dream about that pork belly sandwich). want to do tipseys if open. maybe coops for some fried chicken and gumbo. Lil dizzys is also a favorite of mine. dinner wise, we are doing dantes one night. The other nights im thinking Irene's, Cochon, k-pauls or some place for oysters(recommendations?)whats a good breakfast or brunch spot?

Yes. We went to the FQF for the first time last year and are returning this time too as it lines up with the beginning of our spring break for the kids. The music at the fest is nice, but the food is the main attraction for us. Most, if not all, of the food vendors are actual local restaurants. You get a chance to try so many different items for $3-6 a pop. We were there last year on both Sat. & Sunday, and when I look back at the menu, there's still stuff I wish I'd tried.

While I agree with what regularguy said below, it's not like you have to eat every meal there. If you want to do butcher one day, do it...there will be plenty of food options for a "snack" while you're walking around or if you find something from a vendor that you want to try, just split it with someone. I would couple the Dantes night with the LE Bon Temps/uptown bars I mentioned above since they're relatively close.Irene's is good, but might not be the best place for a larger group b/c they pack them in really tight there. I'm a big fan of Emeril's NOLA, which is right in the quarter. Good for groups and solid food. If you're looking for raw oysters, I would hit up the happy hour at Luke, which is only a block or two form where you're staying. They've got great oyster specials for happy hour...just check first that they're doing it during FQF

oh, i plan to eat every meal like its my last!! i gained 7 lbs after the last week i spent down there. it was absurd. So for our dinners im now leaning towards, K-Paul, Dantes and Jacques imo. Was also leaning toward Cochon and also considering Emerils NOLA as well. Thoughts? Good point about Irenes, it is tight. I will scrap it.

I was looking at Lukes, im thinking we may do a oyster brunch there one of the days. Thoughts? So if i do reservations(we will have a large group so i will probably make them soon) whill they require a Credit Card to hold them?

Also, any recommendations on either a renting a boat to go fishing or doing a swamp tour?

Lil dizzys is also a favorite of mine. dinner wise, we are doing dantes one night. The other nights im thinking Irene's, Cochon, k-pauls or some place for oysters(recommendations?)

whats a good breakfast or brunch spot?

So is the food at the fest going to be worth doing on most days?
& Sunday, and when I look back at the menu, there's still stuff I wish I'd tried.
oh, i plan to eat every meal like its my last!! i gained 7 lbs after the last week i spent down there. it was absurd.

All of your dinner suggestions are good. They should all be accomidating to bigger groups provided they have the availability. Brunch at Luke is good, although I'm not sure what an "oyster bruch" entails. Been there many times and have always had a good meal. Not sure about the CC to hold.I've never done the swamp tour thing, but heard it's fun. I do know that you have to be there early IIRC, and it's about 45 minutes or so away...so it could break up the party so to speak. If it were me, I probably wouldn't do on the bachelor party...but if it's something that a majority of the people want to do, then by all means consider.

Sitting at Cafe Du Monde out of obligation (and honeslty it's pretty damned tasty) as my last stop before heading back to New York.Hit up Mr Bs for lunch Monday - really good as usual. Wouldnt say great. Dickie Brennans steak house for Mon dinner - color me very unimpressed. Great atmosphere and service but steak was meh and that's being generous.Dinner last night, since Dante's was closed Tuesdays, was L'erevolution which was one of the best meals I've had for a while. Bone Marrow, quail three ways, just awesome all around - service, atmosphere , eye candy and the food was off the hook.

Heard nothing but excellent things about L'erevolution. Sorry to hear about the food at Dickie's. I went there in December, but was quite :banned: at the time, so not a good judge of what the food was like

I agree. Dickie Brennan's was a waste of time. Great service, completely ordinary and underwhelming food.

I've updated the original post, officially crossing out DBS

Just got here for a week. Damn it's cold. Business dinners set up at Herbsaint and DB's steakhouse. Surprised by reviews. Came 3 years ago and it was very good. Tipsey ain't open so not sure of dining situation the rest of the week. Maybe a stop at Lola's. I'm sure I won't be underfed. Going to the races on Thursday at Fairgrounds. Doesn't look like much is happening music wise this week. At least names I know.

Give GW Fins a try. Tommy's is good. Drago's on the Riverfront for char-grilled oysters. Blow the budget at August - my kids still talk about it from years ago.

Yeah, it's cold right now. For music, take a stroll down Frenchman street tonight, you'll find something cool and local. Sunday nights are usually big b/c for the service industry folks to go out.

Love when I get to meet fellow FBG'S. -jb- stopped by our booth. Solid guy and who knows there may be some business opps.

Very weird week. Had some great meals. Best was the duck confit at Herbsaint. Dickie Brennan's was just OK. Great Cobb salad at Palace Cafe - candied andouille sausage - are you kidding me? Not an oyster fan but have to say the chargrilled oysters at Drago's were awesome. Rock n Sake had pretty good sushi, though not nearly as good as my favorites here in CA. On the flip side, 2 of my best meals were 4am chicken fried steak steak and eggs at the IHOP on Canal. 10X better than a gray Lucky Dog or a Krystal Burger if you need something to soak up the alcohol.

Man I love me some Frenchmen St. Start at BMC and then hit up all the clubs. Seriously talented musicians. Fun day at at the Fairgrounds as well. Very fond of Nawlins. Terrific city.

Definitely recommend restaurant reservations ASAP, especially with a large group (expect to eat later in the evening).

Where are you staying?
