Never been on one, but have heard good things. I'd imagine they have groupons and stuff b/c of the competitionanyone recommend a decent "Swamp Tour" for me and the family? I'll be down in like 2 weeks. A buddy suggested doing something like that while we're in town.
The kids will love it and it won't be too hot yet. I think for the adults you'll be surprised how close real swamp is to NO.anyone recommend a decent "Swamp Tour" for me and the family? I'll be down in like 2 weeks. A buddy suggested doing something like that while we're in town.

Ha very nice, I think I know it, I will ask a friend who has a collection of DrJ.![]()
Just as I saw this post, I was listening to:
Sweet Home New Orleans - Dr. John
Now, I have a question:
After Katrina, Dr. John released an extended version of this. The "...home sweet home..." chorus at the end got much longer & funkier, and added, "...we will come back, stronger than before"...or something like that.
It is my very favorite Dr. John song, but I can't seem to find that version online anywhere. :(
You got any clues?
I will gladly pay you Fat Tuesday for this cheeseburger today.![]()

He coudn't just "Lie down with Lions"?Our son is going to working as an intern at the zoo this summer. Any suggestions on a good place for him to live for the summer that is very close to the zoo or along a bus line that he could use to get to the zoo each day since he won't have a car? I guess we'd be looking for a furnished apartment that could be rented for just 3 months, or something along those lines. Any help appreciated.
First of all congrats, that sounds awesome. - I think you mean neighborhoods here. I used to live in that area. Our son is going to working as an intern at the zoo this summer. Excellent, thanks for all the info. He is really excited since he hopes to make a career out of working with animals, studying their behavior, etc. He sent applications to a number of zoos across the country and got the offer from the Audubon Zoo. He sent some questions to the person in charge of the intern program and is still waiting to hear back, so we are also hoping that they can provide some suggestions about housing, maybe even give him the names of other interns that might be in the same situation. We are in Virginia and he has never been to New Orleans and my wife and I have only been there once.First of all congrats, that sounds awesome. - I think you mean neighborhoods here. Between Broadway & the park is closest but can be pricey & I doubt you'll find anything reasonable. Black Pearl is within walking distance on the other side of Broadway but FYI it can get sketchy closer to the river. If you can get something closer to St. Charles he should be fine. By Maple is great, very college. That's likely a short bus ride down Broadway. It's also by the streetcar on St. Charles so he can explore the city some.
On the other side, anything along Magazine by Calhoun or Henry Clay could be walkable. Up to or just around Jefferson should be a short bus ride. The bus will be on Magazine but he/you will likely want to keep him close to Magazine where the bus is. Magazine would allow him to up and down the city too.
My guess you will find a lot of apartments by Tulane/Loyola, Broadway is a straight shot to the park for the bus and also is right by the streetcar for around town and a nice experience.
There's a facebook group called "Tulane Classifieds" that I sure would be a good place to start, I see rooms popping up in there a bunch. I would imagine there would be folks looking to fill slots for the summer. Our son is going to working as an intern at the zoo this summer. If you haven't been to Commander's Palace, you should definitely go. Echo R'evolution...it was very good. Also, https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwjO_5bw9vbTAhXLa5oKHYkeD0gQFggkMAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fcomperelapin.com%2F&usg=AFQjCNE3-hJvVCZ-0_OOIHx7d8nLv7idsw&sig2=SOaph9HUvZ9-NYfvqw0EoQ was excellentNeed 2 outstanding restaurants to try. Recommendations? I'm liking what I read on Yelp about Restaurant Rebirth. Thinking there on Friday or Saturday. Anyone been there? I've been to Restaurant August, all of Emeril's joints, Herbsaint, GW Fins, KPaul's, Cochon Butcher, etc. Never been to some of the classics like Commander's Palace but not sure if that's my jam anyway. If you only had 2 restaurants to go to in NO, which would they be? (besides McClures of course).

One of my favorite meals of all time. SeriouslyI think the restaurant is kind of touristy, but KPaul's blackened drum fish is fantastic.
Cool that you have been here. The chef used to be at Petit Grocery. A rare example of good restaurant boudin. Also ate at Freret St Beer Room - it's out on Freret which is a cool st near Tulane area. Just a killer Gumbo - served with potato salad the way it should be. Great roux. They pair food with the beer selections.
ETA: NMBooked Restaurant Rebirth for Friday night. Still up in the air about Saturday night. Tough choices. So much great food, so little time. We'll go to Tipsy's for lunch one day.
Don't think so, but love that place (R'evolution)You mean revolution?
just googled it....hadn't been there (Rebirth) yetDon't think so, but love that place (R'evolution)
Judge - just found out about a great show going down at Little Gem Saloon you might want to check outWell, we are having our customer conference in October in New Orleans. Found out I have no obligations until Sunday night at 6pm. Looked at the calendar and hit the jackpot. Flying out with Mrs. Smails and another fun couple on Friday 10/13. Land at 1pm. Crescent City Blues and BBQ Festival happening all weekend (Tipsey - ya there?). Robert Cray one of the headliners. Very cool. Saints play the Lions on Sunday. Definitely going. Need to think of the 2 best restaurants to book Friday and Saturday night (other couple has never been). Ideas? Bourbon St one Friday night and Frenchmen's St on Saturday night. Bloody Mary's Sunday am and then the game. Then have to entertain customers for 3 days after, including renting out Arnaud's and Mardi Gras World. Staying at Hotel Monteleone so will be in the thick of the action the entire time. Better start training. If any other FBG's are there that weekend let's grab a beer or three
Heading down myself for a short two nights. What places did you hit up and would you recommend?Booked Restaurant Rebirth for Friday night. Still up in the air about Saturday night. Tough choices. So much great food, so little time. We'll go to Tipsy's for lunch one day.
My wife and I did this one and it was a nice combo of learning some camera stuff and walking the quarter for photo opps.Has anybody done any good tours in NO? The wife and I wouldn't mind doing a walking tour of some kind of architectural area and other NO highlights.
Thoughts?
Not going until Oct 13th. Right now I'm booked for Restaurant Rebirth on Friday and Doris Metropolitan on Saturday (though that may change based on how late we stay watching Robert Cray). Been to a ton of others. GW Fins, majority of the Brennan restaurants, Emeril's restaurants, K Pauls, Dante's, Cochon Butcher, Restaurant August, Mother's, Arnaud's, Herbsaint, McClure's, etc. Could be there a year and not get to all of the great restaurants. Haven't been to Commander's Palace, Bayona and a bunch more. Hard to go wrong if you do a little research on YelpHeading down myself for a short two nights. What places did you hit up and would you recommend?
We had about a 75 year old African American gentleman take me and Mrs. Smails for a fascinating ride in a horse drawn carriage (PETA flame away). It was fascinating. Told so many stories around architecture, history of New Orleans, etc. Truly great.James Daulton said:Has anybody done any good tours in NO? full blown playa.Holy crap Bourbon St. is insane. And for about 4 or 5 blocks the street is closed for maintenance and only the side walks are open. One the plus side, we were entertained by watching huge rats go in and out of the 2nd floor of the building next to the restaurant we were eating at. That's the last time we just randomly walk into a place for food down here.
The music at so many places was awesome though. But who knew there were so many strip clubs right on the main drag. I must look like a player because dudes kept beckoning me to come in and check out the show. Said I'd love it.
Honey island swamp band at dba at 11Going to Frenchmans St tonight.
Beignets at Cafe du Monde for sure.Sister is getting married on December 29th down there. We will be in town from the 26th-31st. Was hoping OU would somehow get the Sugar Bowl so I could extend the trip and go to the game but it was not to be. I've never been before, really looking forward to it. We are staying at The Pontchartrain Hotel on St. Charles Ave.
7 year-old step-son is going too. What are some good things to do with kids? Audubon Park has been recommended so far, weather permitting we will definitely do that one day.
