***Official New Orleans Thread*** (1 Viewer)

@Tiger Fan@SaintsInDome2006@tipsy mcstagger and any other NO peeps. My BIL and SIL will be moving to New Orleans sometime in the next few months. She just got a job at New Orleans University. They are thinking of Lakeview but is there anywhere else they should look? Looking for 3br/2bth places where everything is walk able, off-street parking and a yard. No kids,  no plans to either.

Hey congrats, UNO is a great school. - NO isn't a traditional grid or spoke/wheel kind of place so getting to UNO can be easier than it first seems, point being they don't have to live actually in Lakeview to get to UNO efficiently. Consider Mid City, City Park area, or Faubourg St. John by the Bayou. A couple other areas I'd say considering are Old Metairie or Bucktown just across the Parish line. Old Metairie can be expensive but so can Lakeview for that matter. I hope that helps.

Any suggestions are really helpful, thanks!!

Going to stay at the Hilton on St. Charles Ave - is this a good location? Looks like the street car goes right by the hotel.

We aren't really going to experience the night life too much since it's a family trip so these are the activities we'll most likely be doing during the day: WW2 museum, mardi gras museum, plantation tour, air boat tour, and ghost / cemetery tour.  Are there any self guided walking tours?

We'll hit Cafe Du Monde for beignets.  What's the best spot for Po Boys?  Muffaletta? Gumbo?

Restaurants on our list: McClure's, Dante's, Luke, Commanders Palace, Carousel  Bar

Any good recommendations for Jazz music - or should we just check out Frenchman street?

Thanks, what a great thread!  Really looking forward to our trip.
Cafe du Monde has MUCH better beignets than Cafe Beignet IMO.

I second Johnnys for Po Boys.

Central Grocery has the best muffalettas and they are huge. They can easily feed two.

I also liked Coops for the biker atmosphere and the food. Good casual dining. And I mean casual.

I also did a cemetery tour and French Quarter tour with free tours by foot. Very good.

With no kids and no plans for kids and wanting things to be walkable, personally I would rule out lakeview, Old Metairie and Bucktown.  Assuming they truely want to experience New Orleans while they're here, would definitely be looking at: Mid City, Faubourg St. John (both 10-15 min drives to UNO).  As mentioned above, on a map it looks far out, but UNO is only a 15 min drive from the CBD as well....and you're going to get a lot more walkable options from there.  Adding a few more minutes to the commute would open up the lower garden district and the rest of uptown.

@Tiger Fan @SaintsInDome2006 The areas both of you have suggested, are they residential enough that houses have backyards and ability to park off-street for cars and a camper?
I totally glanced over the "off-street parking and yard" comment before...my bad....so I'm assuming that's why @SaintsInDome2006 mentioned Bucktown, Fauborg St. John and Old Metairie as well.

Honestly, it's going to be tough to combine the off-street parking, yard and walkable.  I guess it would depend how "walkable" you want to be.  Mid City is probably your best bet to combine those 3.

If the walkable isn't as important, that opens up a ton of options.

Like TigerFan indicated I was thinking of places that hit any of your criteria. It will be hard to find an area that hits all of your needs.

NO proper isn't exactly traditional residential. Not including Lakeview...

Off street parking in the suburban sense would be Bucktown (affordable) and Old Metairie (expensive typically). Bucktown is also a straight shot to UNO, right down Robert E. Lee, it's basically linear with Lakeview. I will add that Bucktown also has access to the Lake, a marina,  boat launch and what is now a really nice walking and biking path right on the Lake. It has a couple good restaurants but it's not exactly a grocery and shopping district though. It does have yards and driveways. A camper would be totally normal in Bucktown. Fwiw my BIL is a college teacher/professor and he lives there.

Faubourg St. John is not good for off street parking and frankly it edges into a little bit of sketchy areas depending on the direction. Yards can be smallish.

For a yard, Lakeview, Bucktown, Old Metairie, and sometimes Mid-City.

- Also FYI, if they look at a map and see NO East and Gentilly, while often it may look nice online and can be affordable with some large lots just note there is crime. Gentilly can be pretty and has some historic homes and big yards, but really I'm sure you want your family safe, so don't fall into liking something just because it's closer to UNO.

I'm in NO now and this thread was an awesome help!  Will provide a full report later in the week

We are headed to Frenchman street tomorrow for jazz and looking for the best place to eat near there.  We still have jumbalya and crawfish on our list of NO foods to try... any recommendations for those foods near Frenchman street?

I was in NO last month and wanted to give a big THANK YOU to everyone who made recommendations - we had a blast!

We stayed at the Hilton on St. Charles Ave and it was a perfect location.  NO has 5 or 6 different street car lines - one stop was a block away and another stop on a different line was two blocks away - so we could travel very easily around the city.  $3 per person per day for unlimited rides was awesome.  We got upgraded to a suite and were provided access to the executive lounge because my wife said we were celebrating her birthday, our anniversary, and m daughter's graduation from high school - they also gave a bottle of wine when we checked in - excellent hospitality.  We also used "Hilton Points" to pay for the room so it was only $50 for the 4 nights - but it cost $200 to park our car for 4 nights    If I ever drive to NO again, I would try to make parking arrangements before I arrived - $50 per night seems a bit steep.

The best meal we had was Shrimp En Cocotte at Luke (we added the crab meat as well) - I highly recommend Luke and this dish in particular.  We also got Po Boys from Mike Serios (meh), Muffuletta from Central Grocery (awesome!), and of course beignets from Cafe Dumond (awesome!).  We checked out Bourbon St. of course and got a Hurricane from Pat O'Briens.

We took a tour of Laura Plantation and it was really interesting.  We also did the Mardi Gras and WW2 museums one day when it rained.  We loved the live jazz on Bourbon street and especially on Frenchmen street - thanks for the Frenchmen street recommendation!  We toured the Garden District as well and I would recommend the self guided tour:  https://freetoursbyfoot.com/self-guided-garden-district/  You can download a "google map" with all the information which was great.  The self guided tour is better because you can see whatever you want and then bail when you've had enough.

Thanks again to everyone who helped shape this vacation - we really loved NO!

Great thread.

Going next weekend 9/7-9/10.  Our hotel is the New Orleans Marriott at 555 Canal Street.  Going to Saints home opener on Sunday.  Looking forward to some great meals and bars.  Any cliff notes on this thread appreciated.

Also, I assume its a good scene around the stadium for pre-game.  Just plan to head down towards the stadium a few hours before the game..will that cover it?

Thanks!

Yo Buck, I will see what I can think of, and provide more tomorrow, but in terms of the basics - If you haven't been the Dome is centrally located, everything from restaurant and bars including your hotel are within walking distance of the stadium.

Yeah, a couple hours before will cover it. Just an fyi:

  • Just walk down Poydras, you will hit the stadium.
  • Champions Square - this is at the main entranceway to the stadium (LaSalle, which crosses Poydras). It depends on your speed but this is the fan-xperience the NFL caters to these days, band, huge screens, outdoors, food booths, bathrooms, and all that. It just got cool for the hurricane but it could likely be hot again by Sunday.
  • There's Walk-Ons - catty-corner from the Stadium at (I think) Rampart and Poydras. It could be crowded.
  • They just opened up a wine bar next door. There used to be a very nice breastaurant called Happy's with some lovely bartenderettes but just recently for some unknown reason switched over to that. Actually your wife might like it and you may as well, again depending on what you like. It has a patio and it's an old building.
  • Unfortunately Le Pavillon's bar is closed, otherwise I would send you there for pre-game. It's cool, it's old world charm that people like in NO, beautiful bar.... but again I think they're renovating. If you're really game there's a bar on the roof that pretty much just locals seem to be aware of, neat view, but you have to take the elevator up to the top. It's on Poydras on the right hand side as you walk towards the Dome.
  • Borgne - a restaurant and bar in the Hyatt. Good food (John Besh), long bar. The Hyatt is right in front of the Dome on Loyola.
  • Cellar Door - on Lafayette.
  • Also at Lafayette and Loyola there is a typical street scene (actually fairly small but regular) with loud boombox music, beer and people tailgating around the corner. Frankly hasn't been my thing for some time but affords people watching on the way to the game.

Barcadia at Tchoupitoulas and Lafayette blocks off the street a bit and has a pregame party. You can walk up Lafayette thru park for a calmer walk than Poydras to Dome

12 Noon kickoffs come at you pretty fast after you've been out partying on Saturday night - Daisy Dukes Express will have a good Bloody in a Go Cup for the walk. Food is good for straight up old school breakfast.

I also like the drinks and food at Cajun Mikes on Barrone and Canal.

There is a Company Burger at Girod and Rampart to get some grease to soak up the night before.

Willa Jeans for coffee and breakfast/pastries are there as well - my wife loves crap like this place(It's one of those Southern Living touted places)- I think it's overpriced. Give me Daisy Dukes steak and eggs and 2for1 Bloody Marys

Ace Hotel Lobby bar is pretty good - but not sure on a Gameday what that is like.

Many many sincere thanks.  I appreciate you guys.

The Ref family spent a two nights in NO Bookended around a cheerleading competition this past April.  My parents volunteered to watch the kid so Mrs Ref and I can go back in January and really check the city out.

ha..... and look at that..... just so happens it’s during NFC Championship weekend....

Of all these things I am sure I have only not tried this Cajun Mike’s place.

Hey @ren hoektell me y’all tried the absente while you were here. If not you’re obligated to return.
We did.... maybe I needed some sort of mixer with it because it was pretty  :X  by itself.

A homeless guy caught up with us one night and was like "hey man, I bet I can guess where you got your shoes".  I was thinking, "i ordered them online... there's no way he knows".  "I'll bet you ten dollars I can guess where you got your shoes from".  "How about a friendly bet for nothing?"

"I'll tell you where you got your shoes...... you GOT EM ON YOUR FEET!"  It was a pretty good joke, so we gave him a dollar.

We had a real great time.  I regret not discovering the little rooftop bar on top of the Troubadour (where we stayed) until the last day we were there.  We met the Mad Hatter guy and talked about his signed David Simon picture, how we loved the Wire, and I heard that new Duo show is good (it was Deuce)?

The best experience I had there was actually the WWII museum.  It's incredibly authentic and respectful to the era I think.  I was surprised at how indepth the displays were.  The tone was pretty forthright and evenhanded too.  They had stuff about Japanese internment camps, propaganda, the runup to the war (where 95% of people opposed it at one point), Project Manhattan, a kitchen that felt like walking into the 50's (opening the drawers revealed wartime rations and talks about how dedicated the whole country was to the war).  It was really impressive.  I read some of the letters the soldiers sent back home.

After a long day of walking around and being kind of WWIIed out, we wandered past the gift shop area to this little restaurant called The American Sector.  We happened to walk in during happy hour, sat down at those two seats at the far right edge of the bar.  I had a little bourbon mint drink, dill dip w/chips, and a killer cheeseburger.  The atmosphere was like the 50's, it felt like we'd just won the war.

We stayed pretty true to the guide- Napoleon House, Cafe du Monde, St. Louis Cathedral, WWII museum, Mr. B's, Carousel Bar, among others- and don't regret it.  Special thanks for helping us along for such an enjoyable trip.  We will most certainly be back.  :)

Sorry moment of sharing because I hit that place tonight. This is great, I’m so appreciative. I had a great time tonight in my own home town, glad to hear you did too. Much appreciation hearing you did as well..

Hit Tipitinas last night for Anders Osborne Chrstmas show.  Had late lunch at Commander's Palace. After Tips we went to Avenue Pub for late food and beer dragged in to room after 3. Pretty pretty pretty good city.

As I already mentioned I got Mrs ref a long weekend to NO next month for Christmas.

Went to the grocery store last night.  Picked up some hurricane mixer.  A uncle bens jambalaya starter kit.  A Beignets mix package.  Some Cajun hot sauce.   I’m also going to take the mug we got from cafe Du Monde wrap all this stuff up and throw it in a box with an envelope at the bottom with the details of the trip.

Heading to the Intercontinental Hotel on St Charles St in a few weeks for a work thing for a couple of days.  I will have a night out to do something.  Never been to New Orleans, am I in decent area to eat and drink?  TIA.

Check out Merils's(A newer Emerils place) and Compere Lapin(Beard Award winner) - and also head over to the Quarter to Mr. B's Bistro for BBQ Shrimp.

We ate at the bar at Mr. B's last week, fried oysters and their signature gumbo yaya are awesome. We've eaten in the DR a few times too, very good. And one time we went with 5 other very boisterous/exuberant couples and the host led us through the kitchen to a back dining area with room for about 2 large parties and a couple of dueces- on the way through the kitchen I asked the host where we were going?

He said, "oh, you guys headed to the LFR."

"LFR?"

"Yeah, Loud ####ers Room!"

It was our party and another batchelor party of 12. We were very loud. We watched one duece after another be seated only to move out seeking shelter. Great nite!
